On board air, whos got it and what's your system?

I'm looking at installing some on board air for my truck, originally I was looking for something like this.

but I was at home depot the other day and saw this.

price wise they are pretty simallar, on board air systems can range in price, but for the most part they cost more or less the same.

The pros for the permanent system

• it's that it's mounted under the truck and therefore doesn't take up any space in the cab/bed
• don't have to worry about carrying/charging batteries cause it uses the truck power system

Cons

• wiring it up and running air lines around the truck.

pros for the milwaukee

• portable, can be used away from the truck
• I've already drank the milwaukee coolaid and have some m18 batteries

cons

• takes up more space in either my cab or bed.
• got to keep batteries charged up plus will need some way to charge them on the road.

any points i've missed?

 

On board air would be so convenient. My work truck ( Ram ) has an inverter and I charge my DeWalt batteries off of that. If I used my Tundra for a lot of off-road adventures I would seriously sway twords on board air

 

I'm gonna put you down as a built in vote, my four main uses would be tires, inflatable kayak, air mattress and clean/dusting off.

I vote permanent. My buddy has that VIAIR with the huge tank in his Jeep and it seems to do him well. Only thing thats questionable is where you're going to mount the tank. Not sure if that could be mounted on the frame in the rear without ditching your spare tire.

You can run a twin ARB without a tank and it'll kick butt inflating tires.

If you have the skills to make a mount, on top of the ABS accumulator and power steering reservoir is a good place to hard mount stuff.








I reccomend using Teflon on your fittings and skipping snake clamps for these if you want to not worry about leaks.

 

if i do permanent mount I'm looking at mounting it in the frame rail on the passenger side across from the gas tank.

 

Mounted where the spare would generally be. Almost 5 gallons of air.

 

I'm still running a spare in the stock location, so this location is a no go for me unfortunately

 

I’d have to measure, but it’s thin enough, it probably clears the tire.

 

I have two ARB twins and neither is installed. I even have an expedition essentials rear cubby mount for it. And a ton of the metripack connectors and terminals.

All my time goes to crying and yelling. My family is a total war zone.

 

You plan on running dual duals? Color me Impressed

 

One for each truck. Except I kinda have 3 now.

Always creeping. Busy as hell lately so haven’t been posting as much. Whatcha doing up this way in June? I think I’m a bachelor from the 26th to the first, so I might have to hit up you and/or @AZBoatHauler for some shenanigans.

I run a ARB twin with a tank under the hood and another under the passenger side.

 

I will tell you, that Milwaukee will suck batteries down faster than me with a mich ultra.

 

If the only con to on board air is wiring and plumbing, there are no cons in my mind.

If you are considering a 5 gal tank, you can add air tools to the pro column. And air horn. I need one of those.

I’m physically unable to use the horn. Happens when you grow up in Hawaii. My hand simply refuses.

what are your intentions with the onboard air? If you are only adding it to air up/down tires, it would be easier to just buy a portable viair. If you want it for tools, airbags, then onboard is the better route.

 

Running the dual arb compressors under the driver seat. This was originally the arb kit that came in a mobile case that I converted into permanent install.

 

Glad I spent money on that reading course instead of on a new truck
