Pretty much. He doesn’t have a name - but being non venomous he’d be spared even if he wanted to move in. We have a California King and a Texas Longnose that actually burrow in the yard -and I did find one of the gophers offspring once


that cali king is a big one, over 4’ now.

 

In one of my former lives I built fence and cleared trails for ranches in northern AZ. Lots of snakes, all kinds. I always caught the gopher, king, and bull snakes and brought em home to release around the property. My theory then and still now, 40 years later, is that if they are competing for the same rodent food sources as the rattlesnakes, then there will be less rattlesnakes around.some folks insist that they will actually catch and eat the rattlesnakes, but I don’t think they normally would do that, outside of captivity. At least not very often.

 

I could kick its ass.

One summer late afternoon, we came across a rattlesnake crossing Zane Gray highway up near 13 mile rock. We did not measure it but it covered more than 1/2 of the highway.
Not completely trusting my memory, my wife confirms this is true.

Rattlesnakes are endangered and protected here. One of the benefits of the northeast is the amount of wild animals that can kill you are about 5.

 

What does his birthday and holiday meals look like?

 

Ravens been with us since college, 24 years. The only torture is what she does to rats
Feed her about once a week. Once she starts nosing the top of the cage like in the photo is a dead giveaway she’s ready to eat

 

He did get some meaty prime rib bones over the holiday, he’s still chewing on those bad boys. Nothing to special I guess.
We did learn a valuable lesson on our last trip; he can’t vomit in the car if he doesn’t have breakfast! But then we fucked up and gave him breakfast and went on a trail……. Not the most fun to clean halfway digested raw chicken out of a soft crate on the trail!
