What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

That sucks about 1stgenoffroad. I ordered my freedoms and got them in normal time, same with my toytec lift. I guess it's all in the timing. Longest thing I had to wait for was my skid plate. It took about 6 weeks.

 

I’m not sure I like that, there being a grey area. And so what about when you dim the cluster? Is it unaffected?

Now knowing this, I’m thinking there’s probably nothing wrong with my sender circuit. When I had my cluster out, my fuel bulb was the same as many other bulbs. What’s strange is that the previous owner couldn’t turn a screwdriver, and took it in to a service shop for anything and everything ever done to it. So I guess it’s possible a shop could’ve installed an incorrect bulb, but when it didn’t work, you’d think they’d look into it further. I dunno. I’ve gotten pretty well used to not relying on the fuel light by now, but I’ll order up one of these magical bulbs and see what happens. Thanx for the helpful info fellas

 

Anyone got tips for removing the sunglasses holder in the RC overhead console? Just pull really hard?

 

If it's the same door as mine, I swear you just push in => [|||||||] <= on the sides near the pivot point and it pops out.

 

What a painful, time-wasting, miserable way to live.

It's one thing to take something to a shop for specialty work, or when you have more time than money every now and then, but to have someone else fix literally everything, even light bulb changes, because you can't be bothered to stretch a little bit and learn something new ... that's just awful.

 

Checking in. I've been regularly monitoring this and several other threads on the forum since I joined and they have proven to be not only inspiring (and entertaining) but also very informative in my decision making process. My build is progressing at a rapid pace and has cost me many doll hairs. It's likely going to take me longer to document the build than it will take to get everything done thanks in part to luck, many hours of planning, and some excellent service shops. I picked up the truck at the paint shop one week ago. Looks amazing! Has since been to LineX for a bed spray and a BAKflip cover install and to an audio shop for alarm system and sound system upgrade. Next week a shop is doing my front brake upgrade, wheels, tires, UCA's, front & rear suspension (among several other things).

By the way my local Line-X shop doubled the factory warranty from 3 to 6 years on the BAK flip cover since I purchased it through them and they installed it for free.

 

I do have a question/concern regarding the wheels I purchased (not installed yet) The wheel specs are 17x9 +1 offset and 5.04" backspacing. Tire size still TBD.

In preparing for my install next week, I was reviewing the specs for the Camburg UCA's and I see it says maximum backspacing 4.75" Should I be concerned with the wheels rubbing the UCA's ? I emailed the shop about this yesterday and haven't heard back. I'm going to swing by there tomorrow to address some other questions.

 

Agreed. The guy was a chemist. He did however save all of the paperwork and pass it along with the truck. When I was test driving it, I was asking questions and after a couple “I dont know”s, he finally stopped me by saying “I’m really not a car person, but you’re welcome to check it out yourself”. He owned the truck for 18 years. Kinda pathetic. Worked out for me tho.

the factory wheels on the tundra out somewhere between 5 inches of backspace and 4.5 backspace. Give it take a little bit depending on offset, whether it be positive or negative. Those specs aren’t gonna give you much room for a bigger tire without the need for spacers.

for example my wife’s 07 sequoia is on 17 inch wheel, 4.75 backspace, 0 offset. That truck runs kings with total chaos on arms and 275/70/17. Slight rub on the frame at full lock.

my 06 double cab is on 16x8, 4.5 backspace, 0 offset, 285/75/16s, 1.25 wheel spacers. Ads coilovers and total chaos arms. Pinch welds folded and beat flat. Mud flaps gone, and front bumper trimmed.

With a positive offset and 5” of backspace, I expect you’ll be buying spacers for those wheels to work.

 

I may switch to same wheel with -12 offset (Assuming they are available)

 

Backspacing on the -12 Offset is 4.53

 

This is the route I’d go personally. Frees up some tire choice sizes

 

This has had me thinking since you first posted about it. There are no great options I see. I think I may take the saddle bag approach, kinda like that chalk bag mod for the interior. I'll drill, so not great for you. I just need to find suitable bags.

I honestly don't need a lot and don't mind drilling into the bedliner as is evidenced today, so that's an option.

I'd ideally like something with about 2x the carry factor, so I could get the tow strap and tools out of the celestial void that one maybe call my center console, and move extra rattley things to my bed, under the Bakflip. But Also need it to be inside the footprint of the wheel well, so I don't really lose any storage. And easily removable.

At this point, if I were a smart man, I'd probably snuggle up with a bottle of Brenne, a pen and paper in hand, and draw up a solution, then market it for 8-12 months before China steals it and mass-produces for sale on scAmazon, obviously sponsored by scAmazon because they're known for contracting companies over there to mass-produce the best sellers on their site.

 

I haven't even test fit that tailgate bag, but now I want to try it backwards (to the inside). A short one of those may have some potential. I'm also thinking military surplus ruck sack if the size is right. Would need a support bar at the top and maybe some sewing skill...

 

I've got 4 vehicles that all fit in some category that make me feel justified for owning all 4 lol. A daily, a utility vehicle (the Tundra), a fun car, and a shitbox for winter to keep my nice truck frame from rotting. My girlfriend has her car, it's a newer Corolla and I hate it so I'm fine never driving it.

 

It's strange, man, I kinda dig the Odyssey. It's not fun really but it's got some nice stuff. It's good at what it does. I think I like class leading vehicles and it feels like one. I don't think the Sienna is quite as nice. But they are all pretty damn good as minivans go, it's a refined category.

 

This is from a mystery box a few years ago. Pretty heavy canvas, some reinforced grommets under the strap. Not perfect but would hold hoses, straps, etc pretty easy it seems with some modding. Maybe drop in some strong magnets to keep it from swinging. It's a little busy for what I'm thinking, but in the ball park.

Actually, took another look at mine today, I was confusing it with our Highlander. If I open the sunglass door on my Tundra and give a gently-firm push up on each leg, it snaps out of its groove. Reinstall was not exactly the same as removal. The angle of pushing the leg into its home was slightly different, and I had to angle the door just right while pushing forward and down.

 

I'm a firm advocate of DIY everything.
But I'm also a firm advocate that not every job is for everyone. You have the best results when you play to your strengths. If homeboy 'knows he can't do it', he's convinced himself that he can't and trying will just yield disaster. As much as that approach to life is disappointing, he's making the right decision for himself.
And you got a much nicer truck for it.

Spacers for sure unless you swap those wheels for less offset & backspace...and even then, you're on the edge of their recommended range. May be looking at spacers either way.
Spacers aren't a mortal sin. There's no reason to shy away from them. I use them on the Tundra and the 911, and most of the cars I've built before them.

Would you jump in to chemistry with no background? While I imagine you might, most wouldn't.

Sewing isn't nearly as hard as some may have you believe. Go slow. Plus you can pull any errant stitches. You can't un-cut material. So buy a little extra.

 

I watched some YouTubes and I think I may remove the console to swap. Picked up a sunglasses holder for temp use and wanted to swap out the garage one to color match the switchpros.

 

Do they still teach home economics in middle school? I think I took that as an alternate to basic shop where students just carved out their name on the bandsaw....lame. Instead I made a gym bag.

Intermediate and advanced woodshop were the classes to take where you got the make bookcases and grandfather clocks. Although our shop teacher, Mr. McWeeney (I can't remember his real name but that's what everyone called him), only had 7 fingers, 4 on one hand and 3 on the other, so that was a little discouraging.

No kids and I haven't attended Home Ec since ~90 or 91.
I can tell you that I didn't learn much of anything in Home Ec or in Shop. Mom taught me how to sew and a combination of Cub Scouts, being a hoodlum, and not growing up wealthy taught me the rest.

 

Home Ec was useless for me but shop was badass. I wish we had it as an option in high school.

We did have glassblowing though and that was pretty amazing. One guy from my class opened his own studio.

I would have liked to do a few dovetail joints and some other cabinetry stuff. With modern tools it’s a different world. But could be super fun with just hand tools the Amish way.

 

This is driving me crazy, lol. I was up late to watch the WSL contest and googling bags and boxes. Sewing something custom would open doors. A walking foot machine would be nice for that. That tailgate bag in a baby version. A top fill ammo can at twice the height (lid clearance issues). I hate the price of rigid molle panels, but that could be a good base for a custom bag that would pretty much be out of the way when empty. I might call these guys.

Something else just came to mind as I was looking at pictures of my bed, and your mention of stitching something up. I was looking at my Bakflip, whose rails clamp to the bed with indexed clamps like this:

I was thinking, "well hell, I guess I could string something up between these clamps, since one is roughly at the wheel well bump-out, and the other is at either end of the bed.... Instead of using an expanding wedge up inside the bed rail!"

So I started looking at clamps on the big guuuurl site, and ... Aha. Bed cap clamps are wider and would support a more significant strap width, which is way more ideal. Something like this, and it could potentially be clamped in reverse so the strap loop sits up under the rail, basically in-set, so the bag would stay out of the way.

At that point, with two of these installed, even if you have a cap, or spray-in liner, or a plastic liner, it could give a pretty universal, no-drill fit. You'd just need to have a bag with straps that would fit through either the upper or lower (I assume lower) slot, and have a way to adjust the straps to lengthen/shorten the strap for fitment.
