Ya know, after reading the comments here I was anticipating the dreaded TRD dualy 'drone' when we picked up the new whip. Surprisingly, haven't noticed anything other than a throaty muffled rumble upon take off. The TRD pipes are really great, imho....bonus if they are a primary factor in the great economy we're seeing.
Down 2/10s with a cold start warm-up aka zero mpg... This is a three tank average.

 

You are right. I’ve heard talking about drone in the dual exhaust TRD, but surprisingly not from the owner of a tundra with the dual exhaust. From these, I just hear great things. The TRD exhaust is my next step up. I can’t wait. I have to save the money first!!

 

I'm still on the stock BF Goodriches and the primary differences I see are when I'm driving (15.5 average) and when my wife takes my truck to work (14 mostly highway). She won't use cruise control and loves rabbit starts and stops.

Also, disconnect the battery for 10 minutes, drive on the highway for 30 minutes, and see how much your MPG rises..

 

IDGAFOS about truck mileage.... But when using cruise control for its intended purpose, my tundra rewards me with terrible gas mileage.

When cruising on the highway for long distances, in a truck, in rolling hills, attempting to be as smooth as possible... I will cruise averaging 75 or 80mph, but lose a good 10mph while climbing hills, Simply not to force a downshift, in order to retain the most comfy driving experience.

Leave it on cruise, Ill yeild a 2.5mpg loss compared to non cruise control, and a less primo driving/riding experience.

All in how you control your foot... and how much you're pulling... and your elevation... and your tires... and your wheel bearings... and your gas quality... and... whatever... It's a truck

 

I agree with regarding cruise control in hilly terrain, but I live on the Gulf Coast and the VAST majority of driving around here is on flat roads.

 

i was doing 18-19mpg with stock tires... the key is keep it stock lol

 

What does keep it Stock mean? I never heard of this saying before.

 

Hand calc 10.6mpg yesterday. Oh well.

Mine is surprisingly accurate. Always look for a level spot to fill and stop at the first click. + - .2 MPG since new 10K miles ago

 

My '16 mpg display is always close to hand calculation.
Our other car shows about 1 mpg higher but it's always consistently 1 mpg higher than my calculation and I don't mind.

 

The TRD pro exhaust is probably the best exhaust for the tundra in my opinion.

 

My vote is for Dirty Deeds BAM.

hyper-miling is real. Coming back from a camp trip and on the highway for 3 hours straight I stayed at a constant 55mph without going over 2000rpm, ended up averaging about 20mpg or so the entire length of it. Even on a 3" lift and 35's with a 1300 pound camper.

Formula: Michelin Defenders ltx in original size 275/55 r20 +
K&N air engine filter + non-speedy driving (cruising @55mph mainly & RPM between 1000-1500 mostly).

I will add the TRD dual exhaust soon.

 

Doesn't make any difference. We are stating that you can get decent MPG from a 5.7 without much effort. Congrats.
Keep minimal usage of your AC will give you a boost too.

 

I'm betting that a well oiled 5.7 with 0 weight / 30 or 20.
Ceratec coated.
A blower with dual exhaust, OEM sized tires.
Good fuel.
A bed cover to reduce drag.
AC off could hit 20 mpg without too much sweat.

 

My computer display has consistently been a tiny bit below hand calculations over the 11k miles I’ve had my 2021 double cab. If I drive under 65 on the highway, I’ll get in the 19-20 range every time (also confirmed with hand calcs). If I go over 75, I’m down to the 15-16 range. If I’m driving short trips around town, or going slow on a rough rez road, it’s really really bad, but it doesn’t matter much at that point. Gotta go where I gotta go. I do a heavy mix of all the above, on an average tank, and I usually end up around 16.5 mpg for a tank. I have a mid-height ARE shell, and I don’t know if that helps or hurts.

 

Hey Nowhereman, thanks for your post. I agree with your formula for mpg too.
My whole point is that with all this green policies stuff they are almost forcing people to give up on their trucks. It may be true that the future is electric, but in the meantime finding a way to pay less at the pump and make the Tundra ownership better is a good thing.
What is ceratec coating?

 

I like quiet mufflers with nice rumble like the TRD and Borlas. Is it yours quiet or loud?

 

Just trying to bring hope to Tundra owners. 18mpg or more is what some Tacomas 4x4 do. So, if you have a powerful Tundra that can work in everyday basis as a Tacoma, do you need to change the truck? Possibly no.

 

Without the TRD dual muffler I expect the mpg will to 18.5 or 18.8mpg. If I go above 19mpg, then I will be back to post an update.

 

My TRD Pro exhaust is quiet with a hint of rumble. Louder when you step on it. There’s a couple of YouTube videos highlighting the TRD exhaust. “Tundradude34” has a nice video about it on his channel where you can hear it from cold start to driving. Check out all exhaust systems for sure.
