My buddies 2nd Gen 2010 tundra is doing some weird shit.

The truck turns off while driving, sometimes it begins to buck and randomly shift.

we’ve cleaned the throttle body, new air filter, ran injector cleaner, changed the crank shaft sensor after it threw a fault code on that.

But the issues persist. I am a mechanic and have very basic knowledge of this. Any ideas?

    5.7 liter with 160k miles.

get a reader and check all the codes the truck is throwing, post em up, that will help folks help you. Also need more info on the truck, engine, miles, etc

I would have a very, very, very intense look at the operation of the alternator, the condition of the battery, and the condition of the battery cables. Have the battery load tested and have the alternator tested. Autoparts stores will do this for free (they want to sell you a battery after all!).

Start with the simple stuff. If you put non-OE crank sensor on the truck, I would put the old one back on for now.

It might not hurt to put eyes on the fuel pump control module as well. In some of the saltier parts of the country, those modules may not live as long as they should.

My wife’s Yukon XL likes to act up if one of the battery cables becomes the *slightest* bit loose or if the terminals get dirty. It’s at the back corner of the engine bay right by the firewall, and it seems like I’m constantly needing to clean it up and/or tighten up the connections.

It acts in a similar way to how you describe, @atacorion.

When it starts acting up watch in the cab for signs of total power failure. Are the gauge lights dimming, does the radio shut off, things like this.

I would lean towards issues with a steady power supply which will cause the entire truck to be real glitchy. It could do some really weird stuff as the ECUs come awake and fall back off because of an unsteady power source.

As others said look closely at the battery and alternator.

IF the truck is shutting off but the rest of the electrical system seems robust, no other weird things dropping off ect. If could just be a mechanical issue or an issue specify with a single ECU. Broken/bad wiring rodents ect. If this is the case Trouble codes from the OBD2 port would really help narrow this down.

Not sure if this helps or not but my 07 had similar issues last summer.
It would lose power while driving or it would just turn off while driving, though both inconsistently.
When it lost power the dash lights would stay on but no response when I put the skinny pedal to the floor. The local shop assumed it was a fuel pump issue. Hooked up to a fuel pressure gauge for a little while and the truck continued to bog down or shut off but the pressure remained constant. Not the fuel pump.
They tested the alternator and battery and told me both were fine. I then took it to a different shop and they immediately put a new battery in and the issue never returned. Unfortunately its hard to narrow this down but like others said I'd begin with the battery and go from there.
