Tundra v8 better mpg

Usually people come here to ask for tips to improve the mpg. Tundras v8 5.7 are great and infamous for not good mpg. If you keep them without to many modifications they maintain 13/17/15 city/highway/combined.
Well, mine is doing 18 mpg combined after installing a new set of Michelin Defender LTX 3 days ago + K&N oiled air filter. I am deeply impressed! So, I am bringing this solution to you all.

 

I know right? The mpg started to go higher over the 3 day.
1. I restarted the mpg reading
2. First day went up to 16.4mpg
3. Second day to 17.4mpg.
3. Third day to 18mpg.

i have to see we’re all this goes and decide whether the TRD dual exhaust will make it even better.

 

First trip back from the dealer, about 25 miles

 

Second day after 30 miles drive

 

Third day, back home from work

Go for it guys!! Tundras are really great! Oh, one detail. I use a lot the cruise control. That may be a contributing factor to the result too.

 

Lets do hand calc and see if you are actually getting

 

In my neck of the woods, they just switched from "winter" to "summer" blend fuel.

I gained at least 1 mile per gallon.

And what about you getting tires too? Nevertheless, I will try to do hand calculations if you have doubts. In the past I did, when I was doing 15min, and actually I was doing like 15.4mpg or so. I suspect is gonna be higher than the tundra computer. In general the hand calculations are either very close or superior. I have never seen like 3 mpg less or so. The computer counts too and without any emotions about it. Jajaja

 

Prob go up from 275 70 to either 295 70 or 285 75 18. My hand calc are usually way off from computer.

 

i have bigger wheels (20’’ brand Fuel rather the 18’’ OEM) but the tires are original 275 55r20. No lift. I try to keep it original.

 

Little things combined add up for me.
I found out that Borla made Toyota's exhaust - I put one on.
Tonneau cover I believe helped.
Understanding how the transmission shifts - trying to get smoother shifts points - helps
K&N filter - maybe in the future.
I get 12 - 13 L/100 combined. which is 18-19 mpg.
the fact I get this loaded up I find incredible.
But if I go 120 kph - 75 mph - it drops to 15-16 L/100 or 15 mpg.
I keep the trip mileage computer on Total Average so it gives me more accurate readings for short trips and it can be reset while I drive.
Otherwise trip average starts at 60L/100 - depressing.

 

I owe several guys here an apology. I stated that there was no way in hell that they were averaging 18+ with a gen 2/2.5. Well, I bought a '20 Gen 2.5 DC 4wd and my wife drove it home and averaged 20.4 mpg from Powell WY, to St. Maries, ID. I thought she was full of it when she told me, until I filled her up several times and confirmed her exact mileage which was 100% the same.

I've settled in at 18.8 with some around town/gravel driving at this point. I didn't think we would get even remotely close to those numbers and I'm pleasantly surprised.

Three tanks in = 18.8 mpg. I agree that it's all about the tires. I'll put on some nice (lightweight) rims, but I'm keeping the stock rubber in these times of fuel gouging.
I also have the factory TRD dual exhaust and suspect that it helps.

 

hello, thanks for telling your story. Coincidentally, in the past I had a Borla muffler straight through that gave 16.8-18mpg. I end up removing it because of the drone. But I missed it until now. I am still considering to put it back.

I'm not in a place to do averages just yet. All of my driving is stop/go city driving, but I know tires can make a big difference. I think the weight between the lightweight Contental HT vs the HD tires is 20 lbs a tire! I'm going to get the lighter tires because I don't need huge tow capacity.

 

If this keeps going you'll be seeing 20MPGs in no time. Take that Gen 3 and he gets to keep the tow hooks.

 

Bump the tire pressure up to 35 ft, 38 rear. Feather-foot the go pedal and don't drive on days that end in "Y".

 

There are many versions of Borla. I don't tolerate drone and mine has none.

I know k&N filters are popular, but they aren’t worth the money. Your vehicles computer decides how much air will flow. Carburetor engines may see an increase, but it won’t be much unless the filter is really dirty.

 

I could never do better than 13.7 on my Tundra.

 

Getting around 16 mostly but hit 20 a few times. My lead foot probably keeps it around 16. Only had it for a couple months but pretty satisfied with the mpg

 

TRD pro is an excellent exhaust. If you are just cruising around you hardly hear it unless you step on it. Others say there’s some drone with towing. I personally love the exhaust.

 

Yes but how much cheddar does it cost?

 

With the lift, bolt-ons, and Mods I get 10.8 mpg and I tolerate it. But may have to reconsider the Supercharger install if gas prices continue to rise.
