Used truck mileage

Thought I would ask y’all a question about used trucks and milage. Old tacoma owner here. In the market for a tundra soon as I find a somewhat decent deal in these crazy high priced times. Comparing prices to milage what are y’all’s thought. Most trucks around my area in the 48-57k range. 2018-2021 is my preferred year. As of now. In the platinum trim.
What are y’all’s thoughts on milage. Would y’all fell comfortable spending 50k on a truck with 45-50k miles? Or would you spend a couple thousand more and get something with less than 30k. Or is it that big of a deal. I just feel like that’s a lot of money to spend on one with 50,000 miles already. But that’s the market!

I bought my 2016 with 60k on it 2 years ago with no issue. I wouldn't start to worry about mileage until over $100k when you have some bigger maintenance items to consider.

 

I had the same thoughts when I was looking last year. I was shocked at the prices, partly because this is my first truck. I just couldn't justify paying that much for that many miles so I just kept looking, even considered buying a new. Ended up finding my 2021 with 14k miles for $46k, I felt it was a good deal so I bought it.

 

That makes me feel a little better. I know the reliability is there with Toyota. There’s few close by with 44-52k miles on the lower end of that price range.

Yea I think you did good with that. Low mile 21s are sky high!

 

I just bought a 2020 Limited 4X4 with 74,000.... just under $40,000. Anything similar with mileage in the 30s was $5k more, even lower trims. I just sold 5 tundras with my business, one of those had clocked almost 350,000 miles. The 74,000 didn't bother me as much as an extra $5k and not getting heated seats or an extra $10k for similarly equipped.

 

Don’t be afraid to look nation wide. There’s enough people on this site who will give you a fair assessment of a dealership near them to help you out should you find a truck that meets your requirements but is far away from your location.

 

You're not looking in the same ballpark I was, but I just picked mine up with 223k miles on it for $18k. I think it comes down to what you're comfortable with doing on the truck yourself. There is a ton of value in paying a little extra for a truck with less mileage if your not a garage mechanic and having less to do upfront (potentially).

I'm the other way around, where I picked up a 2010 for a good price with zero rust, every option I wanted, right color, leather etc and it left a ton of room in the budget to modify it to make it my truck. I can also find a drop in engine with 30-50k miles for ~$7k and drop it in over the weekend and still be significantly ahead of a newer model with those miles for my all in price.

Wherever you fall on the spectrum, the Tundra is a solid truck and finding one that has a good service history or maintenance records should be top priority vs. the mileage number. Mine was a well serviced +200k truck and just some minor cleaning its still running like a champ, I see it making it to 400k easy. You could also buy a 2016 with 60k that ran 20k oil changes, towed most its life, etc. and have a completely different experience. I would focus my time on a vehicle that looks like it was well taken care of physically, and has the service records to back that up mechanically. If the wheels are pitted, paint feels like sandpaper, interior isnt clean, stay away. Because they certainly didn't give the mechanicals the attention they deserved either.

 

When buying used vehicles I generally keep to 45k miles and under. I did purchase my 4runner at 80k miles, and it has been one of the best vehicles I have owned. So as long as it is a good model, well maintained you are good to go.

 

When shopping for used and comparing vehicles, I like to think of mileage differences in "years of driving".

Meaning I figure I'll drive each of my 4 vehicles about 8,000 a year. So if there are 30K miles difference, that's almost 4 years of driving difference or 4 more years I'll get out of the vehicle, comparatively.

Not sure that makes sense yet it helps me decide...

 

Thanks for all the input! I bought my Tacoma with 42k on it and it was a great truck. Never had an issue in 80k miles I owned it. Never looked into a tundra until I had two kids. Tacomas and car seats don’t go together unfortunately! Def will be looking at the service records on any truck. But especially the ones closer to 50-60k. As I don’t want to buy something and start having issues!

 

my Tundra is a 2015 which i paid $52k for and it the odometer currently sits at 92k only difference is the money is in Cdn and the odometer is in kilometers. That would mean i bought it for about $42,500 usd and has a hair over 57,000 miles.
I mean it's still a great truck but holy shit, what they're asking for trucks these days is ridiculous!

 

Yea it is ridiculous. Good time to sell but not to buy. And I need a truck. I can get by a few weeks but not long.

 

30k? 50K? Who cares? Why even buy a Toyota? ...might as well get some highly trimmed out garbage like a Ford.

A 50k mile Toyota is no better than a 300k mile Toyota if properly cared for. People don't buy these trucks just to sell them after a couple of years. I would question what you really want.

A Ford has way better options and features, is generally cheaper, and at about 80k, shit will start to break for no reason. A Toyota will last forever, hold it's value and you'll have very few problems, but not as many features.

 

Same here, bought my 2016 4x4 with 66k last year for $40k. Service history was great and it's certified.

 

Bought a 2014 with 158K on it. Love it.
