I currently own a 2006 doublecab with about 105k on it. I've had it for three years and it's been good to me. I've got 6112/5610 with about 20k on the suspension and is otherwise largely stock.
I am considering buying a 2019 doublecab 8' bed with about 103k on it. It's got Kings, ekstrom steering, deavers, dirty deeds exhaust, sliders, and 35's on non-gaudy method wheels. The suspension components have ~70k on them.
The money difference is reasonable. I'm not financing anything either way. I'll buy the 2019 and then sell my 2006. I don't really need the new truck for any specific reason. I haven't driven a 2nd gen tundra, but I have driven ford and chevy modern trucks for work. I don't mind working on my truck, but there are other things I would rather do with my time.

Going to the 2019 would give me a rear camera, closer to modern stereo, likely sharper steering/easier highway driving, likely better lighting, a 13 year newer truck, and the 5.7. If I keep mine, I will put some money into the stereo, back up camera, and lights. Not the money difference of the trucks, but some money none the less.
The specific truck isn't local to me, so I would fly to get it. Meaning that a buying decision would have to made on the spot. I will probably try to drive a local doublecab, too.

I don't need the bed or the towing increase. I pull a light raft trailer occasionally, and the 6' bed has been fine on my '06.

People with both 1 gens and late 2nd gens (2.5?) (@KNABORES & Rex) any thoughts?
What are the weak points of the '19?
I get 16.5 mpg in my '06 on 31's. What will the '19 get? 13?
What else do I need to know? Would you get the newer one 'just cause?'

I'm new to this crowd, having just bought my Tundra the other week, but I did read that the driveshaft on the '19s are not greasable and are considered "lifetime" lubricated. Which we all know = as long as Toyota WANTS it to last, which is usually shorter than how long WE want it to last.

The way you describe your intended use, I’m not sure the 2019 adds any value, other than being newer. I personally would not have spent the money on a new truck if I didnt need the added capability of the 2.5gen to pull a large travel trailer. Still have my 2000 and would still be daily driving it if I didn’t need it for that. It’s a better sized truck in my opinion and still going strong at 270k miles.
My gas mileage truck on the 2019 is 15.8mpg in mixed driving.
My gas mileage in the 2000 is 15.8mpg in mixed driving.

The 2.5 gen DCLB look like absolute garbage as well. If you don't need one, don't waste your money. Car payments suck, as do higher insurance payments.

The 2nd gen DCLB is a land yacht of a truck - you buy that truck if you need the bed space. I drove one for several years and you have to be deliberate with how and where you drive in town. Stock they drive big, on 35's with wide offset wheels I can only imagine. I would drive it before you make the jump, but that's a bunch of real estate to drag behind you if you don't need it. It is going to drive very different from a first gen double cab. But you see double cab long bed HD trucks on 37s rolling around town all the time, so maybe I'm getting old and sensitive.

They do tow incredibly well though, having that much wheelbase makes for a stable half ton.

Man. Might need to pop over to the generation 2.5 boards to get some reckless advice. Look at you all being reasonable.

You guys are right. I don't need it. It just felt like for ~8k difference, that maybe it made sense to have something newer. Newer rubber bits, newer technology, rear seats that fold the right way and don't come unstitched, etc.

BMF good call. I hadn't thought about the increase in registration costs or insurance.

But I don't need it. I need to keep telling myself that.

Sharkdog sounds like he has both time and money to burn. I'm jealous. But on a serious note, isn't the cam tower oil leak on the 5.7 a real issue? Seems like they all get it eventually and it's a repair shop project unless you have confidence to remove all the cams and VVT components as a DIY'er.

Having done this swap a couple of years ago. If you don't need the added capability of the 2nd gen I would just keep the 06. Cheaper to maintain as far as tires, registration and insurance, rides better, gets better fuel mileage. I love my 2nd gen but you really cant compare the 2 as they are very different trucks. My 1st gen had 300k on it so it was time to move on, it was a great truck and is still serving the new owner well. Of course the decision is yours but I wouldn't change if you really don't need too.

Thanks for noticing! Seriously, though if I had money to burn, I would have just done it. Instead I'm on here getting talked out of it when I was trying to get talked into it.

I'm going to forget it the 2019. Get on crutchfield and get a stereo like I've been saying I was going to do for 2 years.

    Thanks guys.

You posted in the wrong section if you wanted to get talked into a 2nd Gen. Sounds to us like you're making the right decision, though.

I have an 05 Double Cab and a 19 Crew Max. There are pros and cons to both. The 05 is about the same size as the current Tacos. It is better for parking and offroading. The 19 is a pig. It is what we use for towing. The inside space is probably the most noticeable difference. I am way more comfortable in the 19, even with a bigger center console. You can get so many more accessories for the 19, but it's all got a "Tundra Tariff" on it. Even Toyota thinks if you can afford a Tundra, you can afford anything. Noone really makes stuff for the first gens like they do the 2+. You're not going to get better gas mileage either. I think 14 mpg is the best I've done. Here's where I messed up, the 19 specifically has no external trans cooler. They stopped it, and it's $1000 roughly to buy an all Toyota parts setup to install. It voids your warranty btw... Some 19s can have towing specific issues such as Trailer Brake Disconnect while towing and the trans temp light coming on while towing. Overall I won't get rid of either, especially since the 3rd gens are hideous.

Sounds like OP has already come to the right conclusion of keeping the 1st gen. But I'll give my 2 cents. If my 1st gen only had 105k miles on it (versus 283k it has), I wouldn't have pulled the trigger on a '21. With the luxury of time provided by a low mileage 1st gen, I'd wait and see how things go with 3rd Gen over the next 3-5 years and go from there. Hopefully by then, any issues with 3rd gen will be sorted out and sanity will have returned to the market.

I have a 2014 DC and love it, but I do miss my 2005 DC.

Adding new audio to your 2006 won't be too hard.
I had a single DIN Pioneer HU w/ XM tuner, 3 old school Fosgate amps under the front bench seat, and a custom box with a 10" Punch straddling the rear seat hump.
I was using the stock door speakers and it sounded good, would have been better if I'd of replaced them.

I would go with a nice double DIN HU now.
Also wouldn't need the XM tuner since I now run it off the app on my phone with wireless Carplay.

I'd still have my 2005 if NTB wouldn't have screwed up my front end.
But after this, I decided to trade her in.

SharkDog,. I have a 16' CrewMax and my son is about to have my 06' Dbl Cab. I would have kept the 1st Gen if I didn't need the additional power of the 5.7 to tow our Travel Trailer. The 06' has 150k miles and we just did a lot of repairs to get at least another 150k from it. New lower ball joints, Bilstein 5100's, brakes (front/rear) OEM Rack and Pinion, exhaust, Hewitt SAIS bypass, new lights, Sony AVX5000 HU, Kenwood Speakers and backup camera. My son should be getting his driver's license next month, then it's all his. Here's a couple pics of the stereo and with new headlights. Forgot to mention, also replaced (by mechanic friend) timing belt, water pump, belt tensioner, cam/crank seals and valve cover gaskets. My point being, these 1st gen's are worth investing in and keeping for the long haul. I do really like my 2.5 Gen, but will find it very difficult to ever completely let go of the 1st gen.

I'd be tempted to keep the Gen1 if it's rust free and you feel confident in it. You don't seem to spell out a need for a bigger truck so I would update your current rig as you'd like and enjoy a great truck!

I have both and am actually starting to consider selling the 2001 again.
The 2015 is so much more comfortable for me on long trips and I am getting used to it around town too although last week I had to start driving my Element to a Jobsite as they started restricting parking there in the extreme and I can no longer get the 2015 into the parking I am left with there.

It is tough to understand really I think unless you drive both more than a test drive too but the 2nd gen is just more truck all around for better and worse and I am growing to prefer it the less I drive the 1st gen if that makes sense?

My Mileage has not really varied between the two at all.

Thanks guys. I’m keeping my truck for now; I don't need a bigger, newer truck. It was intriguing to think about a lot of the things that I would like to do to mine already being done with the 2019.
@16CMTXED That's a sweet ride for your son. Lucky Dude. I think they are worth investing in, too. They still end up being pretty inexpensive trucks in the scheme of things.
@ezdog I am sure that I would like the new one, but I certainly don't need it. I guess the longer I stay with the old stuff, the longer until I think new stuff is unnecessary.
    @1lowlife That sucks!

    It hurt my feelings...:p

    Keep that 2006 @SharkDog
Run it until it can't go anymore.
By then you'll have the cash to pay for a 2022+ and maybe they will have all the bugs worked out..:eek2:
I plan to keep my 2014 for a long time...

Keep the 06. Why buy a Toyota just to sell it at 105k? Not even broken in yet.

The 5.7s are all 100% us made, motor and all. The 1st gens are better quality.
