2001 Tundra V6

Hello everyone ,
I have 2 questions.

I have a 2001 Tundra V6 SR5 access cab. I have 198k miles on it. I am having a loud sound on acceleration and I feel like the truck is not moving as it should. I just picked this truck up so I can’t say it was like this.
I thought it was the clutch fan. I changed the clutch fan(not OEM) and still have the same noise. It sounds as if it’s the fan that is just loud.
I have cleaned the MAF and throttle body to make sure but is still the same.
I have also given it a tuneup, fuel pump and filter, radiator thermostat valve covers pcv valve.
I donot see any exhaust leaks or cracked manifold.
It feels like the exhaust just isn’t getting out. The cats do not seem to be clogged, Besides this the truck runs great. I can go 70 plus on highway runs smooth.

Maybe because it’s a v6 but just shocked it doesn’t have more power. Either way. The acceleration sound from fan is just soo loud.

Other problem is I cannot seem to move the 4x4 shifter passed one position. On knob shifter it has 4h neutral 4l. But it won’t move. This is an automatic v6.

Also no codes. Had one for Oxygen sensor. Changed it and all good

 

I doubt it has anything to do with your problem considering the likelihood, but how are your exhaust manifold gaskets?

 

A bad exhaust manifold gasket can lead to a noisy engine and could fix your exhaust concern.

 

exhaust manifold/gaskets good. no leaks. The sound is like a transmission that is on its way out when it’s skipping. The tranny is good and shifts good.

 

How are the rpms

 

1st thought was exhaust manifolds. Notorious for making rattles, ticking, obnoxiously loud sounds.

Note that a sucking/vacuum sound that could result in loss of power ... intake manifold gaskets.

 

Actually, this update makes me think my 2nd thought could be the issue....

FYI, that person wasn't the only one to find their flex plate cracked. So apparently it was an issue that wasn't totally a one-off.

 

I also feel like it could be an air intake issue.

 

Yeah, but it could also be a sign the truck is giving up the ghost, too. I think OP probably should just give me the truck, I'll take it to the recycler.

RPMs are good. Vacuum lines are neewer side. No sign of leak
I also thought maybe the fan itself is bent but it’s not.
Just to be clear, it’s the fan that is loud. No ticking cracking noises. I will post a small vid of I can. I will look into flex plate.
It does feel like it’s an exhaust leak but it’s not.

 

I think most of us have the 4.7 and aren’t overly familiar with the v6. maybe @shifty` can point you in the direction of a member with the v6.

Also I think the majority of us don’t have floor shifters. >_< With my experience from having owning 7 prior trucks with floor shifters, when the shifter doesn’t want to move, just force that sob where you want it to go. Each one of them were stubborn as hell. Sometimes they are just tough to move, especially when you try and put it in low. Don’t forget to put it in neutral.

 

@Tundra2 has one V6, one V8.

I must've missed this was a V6 manual. Didn't see the bottom half of the boot on the hump. My bad.

It’s a V6. Automatic. The frame is is good condition.

 

I’m thinking maybe it could be the bracket that holds clutch fan. Any thoughts?
I am thinking about switching to electric fans but not sure if I should or what exactly is involved

 

Ok. So I figured out the loud noise. I wanted you all to know. I bought an OEM Clutch fan and that made everything good. The clutch fan I put in was not OEM. IT WAS NEW. But not good enough!!!

Did it come with a new fan or did you just replace the fan clutch?

 

Just the clutch fan. That was $200. The bracket is $900.
I had a stud that goes into the bracket strip. Toyota dealer said I need to buy the whole bracket if I want the stud. Like come on man …

Anyways, Advantage auto had a water pump kit for $12 bucks that had the correct stud. In case anyone else has this problem
