Tundra vs. Domestic trucks

Best pickup? That's subjective.
Most reliable? That's easy. The Tundra is hands down the most reliable half ton. Fact. Every publication agrees on that as well.

#2 on consumer reports. Scores higher than all of the domestics. Why didn't I buy CR #1? Obviously...

 

And after years of driving Toyota trucks (5 total) I bought an ecoboost Ford in 2012. 2 years later with barely 20k miles the engine blew while doing 70 on the freeway. It was covered under warranty, but I was without my truck for a week and lost most almost all confidence in Ford's reliability. A year later it started having a lot of strange electrical problems. 2 weeks later I got back into a Toyota and didn't look back!

I'm from Michigan......I watched as the big three went down the shit pipe back in the 70's and 80's, opting for cheap, quick, fast production, and gimmicky BS tricks. Friend after friend bought from the 3 and time after time their rides broke, exploded, and died. Then the big 3 decided that they'd had enough of the unions and paying unskilled labor $40 an hour to turn screws and nuts, so they left the country deciding it would be better to have most of the parts manufactured in Mexico then shipped to the US for assembly. Toyota knows how to build vehicles that are reliable and dependable.....just change the oil. Yes, some parts are manufactured overseas, but the trucks are assembled here in the states. The reason they don't have all the gadgets and widgets you'll find in American trucks? When Toyota finds something that works, they stick with it. Check out Consumer Reports, Toyota is always at the top, Dodge/Ram is always at the bottom. Look in any used car magazine/auto trader.....one, maybe two pages of Toyota's compared with dozens and dozens of pages of the others. Look at your local used car lots, you'll be hard pressed to find Toyota's next to all the Ford's, Chevy's, and Ram's. The signs are all there.

I didn't know that Chevy used a wax coating instead of paint or e-coating. What engineer thought that this was a great idea?

Been doing it for years. Hated it on my 2011 Silverado. You could take your fingernail and scrape it off.

 

Same crap was on 2015. That truck was such a P.O.S. What a shame too. I liked so many features of that Silverado. Just such s Chevy piece of crap.
But Chevy's junk got me into my tundra.

 

That's not the engineers, that's the bean counters at work.

My first Tundra and third Toyota. Back in November I was in Mexico for the Baja 1000. The 2015 Chevy diesel that was with us had a catastrophic engine failure. Fuel injectors just exploded. Just filled the tank up at the gas station, drove it maybe 100 yards and the engine shut off. No lights. No smoke. No noise. No warning. So there we were on the outskirts of Ensenada Mexico, ten miles from our hotel. This was the third issue that Chevy has had.



The Chevy was towing a trailer with a prerunner on it (4 seat buggy) And my Tundra had to pull all that weight off to the side of the rode. We then unloaded the prerunner, disconnected trailer, hooked my Tundra up to the trailer and used a wench to get the heavy as fuck Chevy on the trailer.



Tundra towed it no problem. It was a very heavy load as the trailer has a hidden gas tank on it of about 50-60 gallons and it was full.

 

I looked at all the trucks before I purchased my tundra. I liked ram but their resale value and reliability had me a little worried. Chevy was next to the tundra but it didn't feel right for me and the f150 I just wasn't sold on it. The extra gadgets in those trucks were nice but I don't know...the tundra basics just make it feel like a truck and not such a luxury truck. If that makes sense.

 

This might not be a big deal to most people, and im not one to bitch and moan, but has anyone noticed chevy and gmc and there major burned out running light/headlights. I'm not just talking older models, this is on brand new fu#$ing vehicles. Just saw one burned out on a $100k vette. Seriously! I can't speak on the big 3 personally, as I have only owned Toyota and will always own a Toyota.

 

Since I owned a 98 Ram 2500 I went back to look at the 1500. They had a 2016 Bighorn fully loaded 44k. The Sales person said they can let me have it for 32k. I was like really!!!! How can you knock off 12K and still make money. That told me that Ram must take a lot of short cuts to produce their trucks. Went back to the Toyota dealer and brought the Tundra. The only issue I had with buying the Tundra is I wanted the SR5 4x4 but next to it was a Limited which the wife liked. Can you guess what I went home with.

I knew I was getting a tundra no doubt about it but just for shits and giggles I went to look at Ford f250s they didn't have a configuration that I would want and the salesman was a private part for only wanting to sell today what he had on the lot .lol
Toyota salesman was super cool not pushy only thing is they forgot to order my truck for a month.

 

F150 crossed my mind for a very very very very short time! god please forgive me ... lol
just the regular v8 and not the eco-crap. I have many bad stories from friends and co-worker towing with the eco but we don't have time!
maybe they have fixed all the eco problems because they sell like hot cakes!

I have worked at the OEM and Tier 1 level in the auto industry for over 30 years. I use to drive GM,FORD and Chrysler products. I have had 5 vehicles purchased back under lemon law for various incurable problems. After dealing with driving very expensive garbage I returned a favor to a dealership that I owed one to. Got rid of my 2000 Dodge Ram 1 Ton dually 4X4 quad cab. Traded it in for a 1.5 year old brand new Nissan Titan LE 4X4. It was the best thing I ever did. 11 years later with 146,000 miles on the clock I went to trade her in for a new Titan, except it looked more like a Ford F150, so the same dealer had Toyotas on the next lot and luckily they had a Platinum Crew Max in White with my name on it. So that is how I ended up here. I cant say the truck has not had its share of issues, but my dealer has been amazing. I live 39 miles from the dealer and any time there is an issue with the truck they provide door to door service. So I cant complain. They send the salesman who sold the truck to me to pick up and deliver it. He lives 10 miles north of me and has to drive to the dealer every day anyhow. It works out well for me. So for now I am enjoying Tundra life.

 

Alright, Alright, Alright. I think I made the right decision going with Tundra. I like Diesel truck more and was leaning towards Ram 2500 or Chevy Denali but they were both more than 60k (ones that I liked). Wanted to go with Tundra TRD/Limited or Platinum but didn't want to spend the money and then spend more to customize which I know I always do. So I bought a used 2014 Crewmax SR5 with 25,000 miles and now customizing it to my version of TRD. I am hoping to be done with the Truck next month.

Hilarious! I thought the same thing when those commercials started: wtf is initial quality? I wouldn't be bragging about initial quality if it was me.

 

I used to have a 99 Dodge Ram 2500 with the 24v Cummins diesel. Diesel trucks are awesome and fun to drive and my truck could tow a house, but that thing had more issues than I could count. Instead of being on the forums to BS and check out other people's trucks, I was constantly searching how to's so I could fix my issues. My family has always been a Toyota family. I learned to drive in a Toyota and my first car was a Toyota. Out of the 10-15 Toyota cars and trucks I have personal experience with I have never seen a repair outside of normal maintenance and replacement of wear parts on any of them. I try to forget the Dodge days and my momentary lapse in judgement. I am glad to be back behind the wheel of a Toyota truck and will never drive anything else.
