So I had noticed clunking noises from the front a while back and I realized the sway bar linkage on the passenger side basically had rusted away until it snapped so I got a pair and when putting them in noticed the rubbers holding the bar were badly worn also so I got a pair of those blue ones off Amazon and fitted them and all was good for a couple of weeks. Then the clunking started again and upon inspecting there was again lift in the rubber bushes so I thought the blue ones must be junk and got another more expensive set from Amazon and fitted them. Well low and behold they have been in only a few weeks and I hear the clunking starting to return again!!
So I did notice when fitting the second set that the sway bar itself is pretty rough and grooved especially on the passenger side under the bush. I cleaned it up as best I could with some emery and applied silicon grease before fitting the new rubbers. So I guess my question is do I need to replace the whole sway bar to fix this for once and for all.

possible, depend how much damage there is on the bar. You should post a few pictures.

Clunking usually comes from the end links more than the frame mounts. Make sure the links haven't loosened a little.

Even if the bar itself is worn there's still bushing between it and the frame. Worst case get a universal bushing for a smaller size bar.

Should I be applying silicon grease to the inside of the rubbers?

Just a follow up on this for anyone reading it. It turned out that every time I replaced the bushes they would oval pretty fast, what ended up fixing it was a new OEM sway bar, it's been in for 6 months or more and the bushes still look like new.
