Brake Pad Shims

    The Dealer is telling me that I should install brake pad shims with my OEM pads. I’m doing the install and this would be the first time I’ve heard of using a shim. Anyone have any input on this? Any Masters in here have a say?

    When I replaced the oem brakes a few years ago, my original brake pads had shims on them. I could have easily reused them if I had purchased oem brake pads. But since I went with an aftermarket setup of discs and pads, I didn't. I think the shims serve the purpose of reducing vibration and squeal. I just put some Stop Squeal on the back of the new pads. Never had an issue with it.

    The original will have shims on them. Make sure you clean everything really good, and apply some brake lube to the shims and pins. When I replaced my pads I didn't clean or lube anything and had horrible brake squeal, so when I rebuilt my calipers I cleaned everything really good, and applied brake lube to everything. No more squealing. I used this stuff, seemed to really stand out from other products during my research

    Put some EDC yellow pads, they didn’t come with shims. Should I reuse the OEM shims on the yellow pads?

    If they fit, why not?

    Newer EBC pads have come with shims that install on the pistons. I would not use both types.

    Do not use OE shims on EBC pads. EBC pads come with the black shims, use that.
