My SR5 came with an option package which supposedly has a 32.5 gallon tank. Upon a few fill ups, seems as though it has a smaller tank. Anyone notice this?

For some reason, people on this forum ask the same question time after time. Run it to empty and you'll find that the tanks are all as large as advertised. Does the low fuel light come on long before that? YES! In every case, yes, there are at least 6 gallons left when the low fuel warning comes on. Is this any different than any other make. Nope, not in my experience. Is the "miles to empty" display close to being true? Not on your life! Can you drive a ways after the light comes on? Well, I can easily go another 100 miles beyond the low fuel warning light. The most I've ever put in my 26.4 gal tank is 26.2 gallons.

And finally, will you burn up the fuel pump if you run out of gas? No. When the engine quits running for whatever reason, the ECU shuts down the pump.

For the 2022, the regular SR and SR5 without optional bigger tank comes with 22.5 gal. Upgraded larger tank is 32.2 gal. Most I’ve filled up was just over 28 gal on my TRD sport, gauge was just touching E and range left was about 30 miles according the the computer. Definitely coulda kept going.

Toyota is notorious for setting the fuel gauges to read empty while holding 4-6 gallons of fuel in reserve. Mostly to keep the fuel pump submerged since the fuel helps keep the fuel pump cool. You could find out how far you can go on a supposedly empty tank to give you an idea.

You will never be able to but in 32 gallons, there is usually a reserve, so gauge shows low, empty fuel, you fill it up...probably put 26, 28 gallons in.

I have the 38 gallon tank, most I have ever put in there when empty and filling up is about 30/31 gallons.

Drive your truck until its fully empty and dies. You'll get 32 gallons in it then. I'm not entirely joking.

Modern day cars & trucks have a huge buffer built in for 2 reasons:
    1. To prevent people from driving it fully empty since the fuel pump relies on the fuel itself for lubrication & cooling
    2. To prevent consumers from simply running out of gas because manufacturers no longer trust their end users. haha
Check out this video to see how far a dude drove his F-150 after "0" miles on his DTE gauge:

Right on, I guess I was in the mindset that engineers do things to an exact standard. I also didn’t expect more than a gallon or two past “E” but it makes sense. Thanks.

I did this on accident and wanted to share. Had 3 miles left until empty and she took just over 28 gallons.

Mine takes 27.5 when the E light comes on and I’m ok with that. I would rather be reminded to get gas with 100 miles left in the tank then With 20.

I typically fill up around a quarter. I’d rather put $75 in it than $100. Gives me the illusion I’m saving money and getting good fuel mileage lol.
