Is this a trick question?

I'm pretty sure '07 was the crossover year from GMT800 -> GMT900 with both being sold as '07 models, so my confidence to answer is low and I'd consult a VIN decoder to be sure. If I have my platforms right, I think all GMT900 platform except the 4.8L had AFM, but don't quote me on this. I can't remember if there were some trim levels that wouldn't have. If your buddy bought one that was the GMT800 platform, I can't remember, I'm inclined to say NO. If it's a GMT900, then yes, it should.

I'm pretty sure GMT800 were all GenIII an GMT900 were all GenIV, and GenIV added AFM.

Yup ^^ and maybe not with the shop he took it to. Sounds like they could GAF less. And honestly, it's worth the $$ because if rebuild is required, build it back better and beefier.

But not unheard of, depending what led up to it. I never expect anyone to be honest about what happened leading up to the event, but would be interested to hear if it was, like, low on oil or coolant, for example, or if it overheated.

I've seen stuck valves cause zero compression on a cylinder, it wasn't anything a good stern engine flush won't resolve. But if it's belching smoke, I reckon something is leaking somewhere because that engine isn't exactly known for smoking unless the rings are shot (wouldn't expect it at that mileage) or headgasket is blown, or similar. Smoke, it's just a matter of what and where. What color is the smoke when you shine a flashlight through it at the tailpipe?

Anyway, sucks to hear. Thing is, GM's engines from GenIII onward are monsters, not as stout as their predecessors, but more efficient and having plenty of longevity with lots of low buck upgrades. It's their electronic transmissions that sucked ass and died after 100k miles. That engine has at least another 50-80k before it should need a rebuild if properly cared for.

 

So his truck is a Y vin, so the newer one and not the classic. He has owned the truck about ten years, and keeps it well maintained. He just went on a long trip and truck ran great the entire time. Said he went to the gym yesterday, and when he went to leave it was driving all screwed up. He is not a car guy. Said it smooths out at a higher speed, and just hesitates a bunch at lower speeds. Shop shows no cam or other codes, just the misfire. Compression tested and it's dead. If it is an AFM setup, I need to figure out what stuff he needs to change out on it. The 5.3's are pretty easy to read up on, but I couldn't find anything on the 6.0's

 

I'm on mobile but hit the search button then click on more, once you're there disselect all forums and change it to first gen only then you won't get the 2022 stuff. As far as A/C stuff I got nothin.

 

So I opened the Solo stock length LCA box. These are listed at 46 pounds and when I picked up the box, I was sure that was for each. In my hand I wonder, but I don't think they could be 23 each, so Im going with 46. Strong build, The drivers side has a burr or weld splat on the driver's side misalignment hole / ball joint hole. no big deal to me. I run my Durobumps on the rear of the frame, these look like they want the bump on the front - or the just added that table to allow for the stock front. Hard to tell without the OEM and these next to each other.

The directions suck ass, mostly warnings and periodic inspection and maintenance (2500 mi on road) requirements with no real instruction other than off road only and you will die. Basically a hold harmless attempt. I think @daveesa should put his on first and run to Texas and back and tell us how it went.

There's nothing to say about the no steering stops, it doesn't have them. I'm guessing it allows for a tighter radius and the ability to hurt things if you hold a full lock and do something else.

Oh yeah - big warning about alignment and a laser shop will kill you, need an old fashioned tape job. I read that on their site and I think it's on everything suspension. But, I'll look into that one.

Well, good news is you have a ginneua pig or two to show you. Not sure how to spell that pig part.

 

Please do tell of how it goes. The extra caster would be so welcomed. I could get my camber back to a normal level with those arms.

as for the stops I’m trying to figure a way to install stops on the steering rack. Should be doable. It’s how ford usually does it

 

You know I will, I post too much as it is. Maybe when I look at them side by side, the no stops will make sense, maybe that clearance they talk about has them riding higher or something. But yeah, without them, it's all about the rack it seems to me.

Interesting. Yes, then. If it's a 6.0 and Y it should have GenIV L76 in it.

Last but not least if you want to verify visually, see the video at the end of this post. FWIW, I would definitely go to another shop, you're in TX, there should be more than one shop within an hour radius of you that specialize in SBC w/GenIII and GenIV. Too many shops out there who aren't interested in thinking, deduction, etc. They want the easy problems that don't have a risk of backfire because they got it wrong.

But really, any shop should be able to throw a bore scope in cylinders, for example. 30 minutes or less. LOW compression one one cylinder and I'm thinking a stuck valve, not unheard of in a 100k engine. LOW compression on ALL cylinders and I'm thinking rings. NO compression on one cylinder only makes me think damaged valve seat, spring or similar. NO compression on one cylinder with smoke and I'm thinking either valve or head damage, or worse. The latter is probably why this shop doesn't want to touch it.

Let me know on the smoke, maybe I can provide a little more direction, though my knowledge of GenIII and some GenIV doesn't make me a master mechanic. I'm not certified and will be the first to tell you that, clearly. An engine is an engine though, deductive logic goes a long way.

FWIW, if this were me, I'd take it to an LS-specialized performance shop and take this as an opportunity to install new high-perf heads and have them delete the AFM if that's what's desired. Life handed lemons. Make some spiked lemonade, here.

Germanic and Latin roots for English. The Romantic Languages (French, Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese) are Latin roots. At least that's what I learned.

Texas isn’t that much further. But I’ll be in the Tacoma. At least I’ll have 6 gears and slightly better fuel economy. And steering wheel audio controls. Unless I find a Prius to borrow.

 

You're not at all wrong, but I'd offer you a challenge. Find 3 examples of English being directly influenced by Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, or any other Latin-root language.

I cited French on purpose. Most linguists would say "Germanic root, French influence". Edit: Just to say, I learned the same as you. In fact, I almost wrote a paper about it when I tried to get into a foreign exchange program to Germany when I was in high school, but wrote it on Nuremberg trials instead. It wasn't until I started working for a French-speaking company 20ish years ago the light bulbs started going off and I dug deeper, solely out of curiosity.

 

Valve train failures are common with some LS engines, certainly of late. It’s usually cheaper / faster for a shop to just swap the motor. Doesn’t mean his motor can be fixed. New rings, sleeved, valvetrain, whatever is the offending part. If he’s adamant about keeping the motor and wants to rebuild himself, it may be cost effective to do so, for many it is not. Downtime alone may not allow it.

 

Here is the question of the day.

If your Tundra was destroyed/stolen/totalled, would you buy another one or something else? And if something else, what would it be?

I think if something happened to mine, I would lean towards a GX470 since I don't really need a truck bed. It almost seems like the Tundras now cost more than a GX.

 

If I lost either of my trucks I probably would not replace it. If I lost both I might be focused on an ev Tacoma, consider waiting for an R1S, or try to grab an MT pro taco before they are history. Nonzero chance I’d buy a 2.5 gen but so pricey. Third gen tundra I dunno. Could just get a Ram 5500 diesel so I can help my bro in law tow more.

I’m fortunate that commuting is not a concern and I can always use my bicycle if it were. And/or get an e bike.

 

It's not Friday, but I feel almost like this could use a survey.

I need a truck. I haul shit too much for working on the house and yard, and I only want to have one vehicle to deal with. If that were not the case, I'd probably go get a J100 right now, either Land Cruiser or LX 470. Not ruling out a J80, that would be another possible, but ...
