Those damn things are a bitch. Honestly, if Toyota made the valve cover shell with the damn things already installed and it was $200 or less, not including the vc gaskets, I'd buy a pair in a heartbeat just to shave 30-60 minutes off the job.

Comparing the two dozen plus vc re-gasket jobs I'd done in my lifetime, this was probably the worst. It wasn't unbearable or hard or anything. Just way more tedious than it needed to be. Funny, I thought futzin' with the half moon plugs would be the PITA. Nope.

Super easy. You should do them while you're in there. If you can't wiggle back and forth to free them up with just hand grip (I couldn't), just get some adjustable pliers in there, clamp down and nudge, it'll pop out. Worst part is clearing out the old FIPG.

Advice on that cleanup: Feel for a lip of the old product on the outer edge of the block and peel up, I got lucky with 3 out of 4 and managed to get enough lip to clear 90% with that alone. I used my favorite tool for alloy, bronze bristle brush, to clear the channel of the half-moon piece itself out.

Reinstall is actually a snap. Half-moon has a channel to it with lips on either side ~2mm tall. When you've got your vc gasket and plug gaskets in (vc gasket has retainers to help it stay in), just fill that channel liberally from end to end, and insert with the clean non-oil stained side out, then push down. FSM tells you to spread the excess that comes up at the seams. Then put your FIPG in the two nicely-cleaned right-angle seams near the front of each vc, and reinstall.

FSM says tighten evenly in multiple passes for mine, says nothing about waiting for FIPG to set. OEM FIPG box says 10-15 minute working time. I've seen some people claim you should let FIPG set up for half an hour or more THEN tighten down, anything less will cause leaks, but I went by FSM and the box instructions on this one.

I was actually bitching about similar w/Noah when he texted as I was closing out the driver side.

Installing my last (frontward) coil pack, I dropped the damn bolt. It fell somewhere into the front. I thought it was in the radiator shroud, but lifting it out and shaking produced nothing. I ended up finding it 20 minutes later, barely!, because the tip was sticking up out of its wedged position in a gap behind the A/C compressor, on the harmonic balancer side.

The coil pack uses the same threading as the valve cover bolts (albeit 40% shorter length) so I thought about it, but like texted him, it'd be my luck the damn bolt would be wedged in a spot where it'd kick into the serp belt and throw the belt, or worse yet, crack a pulley. I was relieved to find it, but that was a 20min delay I didn't need on something that was already taking twice as long to finish as I'd expected.
