1st Gen. Lunch Table - General Discussion

Approaching 100 miles of the gears break in. Pretty nice so far. Oil change is recommended at 500, and expected to be metallic looking. Seems to me the majority of the metal would find its way into the oil in the first 100 miles, and then spending time in there for the next 400. I'm going to change it after 100 and 500.

 

Very similar to how I broke in the LSD in my trans.
Drove it home from PA, changed the oil, then changed it again after another 500 just to be sure it was clean.

 

I got 3 SHOs I'll trade ya. And an 02 tundra.

I looked into the 996, they're cheaper than I thought until something goes wrong. A guy was selling one and had a document that the motor was replaced, 15k for the motor and 4k labor.

 

Wonder if that was the bearing issue. Heard the Turbos don't have that issue.

 

It's going to be 75 and sunny here today. I'm going to detail the RAV4 today. I might do the Tundra tomorrow. I was going to wait and see if we got one more snow to play in but it's not looking good.

This could be Spring of Deception though.

 

Anyone know off hand what the inside diameter of the radiator hoses are?

There's a few different sizes available, but I'm not sure which is right. I've got a set of hoses coming from RA so I can replace which ever I use. And also use as a size guide if nobody knows off hand.

Also planning on robbing a y-strainer through pops at my old job with a set of hose bards for the heater core supply line...

Really contemplating doing a heater core replacement, but I'd like to know I got all the crusties out or as much as possible. Crackie runs good, and the heat blows ok.... but last thing I need is to be circulating more shit in the cooling loop if I can remove more just from routine driving. (Lazy)

Sounds like a normal winter here. Although it did get cold enough to snow last week for a few minutes which isn't super common.

 

I bet all hell broke loose on the streets driving. When it rains here, people act like they are driving on black ice

 

There was plenty of black ice and craziness I'm sure, I started to watch the moisture on my truck freeze over in real time when the temperature started to drop.

It's the same here whenever it rains though, people drive crazy and the roads are super slick after the first rain because of the oil.

We keep getting false starts for Spring here. I learned that my turtle is the best weatherman ever, I just have to pay attention to him to know whats coming.

 

With my moms tortoise, we kinda play god, he doesn’t exactly hibernate when he should or doesn’t dig a hole, so every winter when it gets cold he gets put in the garage with a towel and blanket on top of this shallow box, usually he wakes up on his own and scares the crap out of my mom clawing on that box

 

I'm fairly certain, based on personal experience, this is true of any car in the Volkswagen Auto Group, to which the 996 belongs.

But, also based on personal experience, it's even worse for anything with this logo, which is a code for "open your wallet, MF".

 

996 is just a mkIV Porsche. Same ignition switch, same headlight switch. It’s stupid.
But so much more car than an R. (Plus I already had an R.)

They are in the right engine family to have IMS issues. The turbos are basically aircooled motors with water cooled heads, so they have different architecture and are considered as bulletproof as an engine gets.
They suck the balls real hard to service due to packaging tho.

I had fewer repairs and fewer headaches with the BMWs I owned than the VWs. Granted the BMWs make up a much smaller sample size, but it’s still true.
I did consider a BMW, but I’d have to get an e36 or e46 to get what I want and then I’d jump right off the slippery slope of modifying it completely instead of mildly.

None of them are terribly hard to work on and they’re all in my background. So none of them are exactly news to me. Pros and cons for all.
But really, none of that matters until I sell the truck.

Also, what does spring even look like for you? I thought it pretty much stayed within 15 degrees year round.

 

It's possible we had the same experience, but here's what I'd say.

My 2010 E60 was a blast to drive. Like this one crazy intern I worked with back in the day, one of the most memorably fun rides I've had, smelled amazing, touch the pedal and it was GO, it was really hard to stay out of it. But it had a plethora of potentially serious issues that led to me handing it off for my 1st Toyota. I wouldn't be here today were it not for it. Despite this being at the last year of the run, there were perpetual electrical issues that plagued the whole generation.

I've had my share of VWs, mostly from that GTI/Jetta MKIV-era sweet spot where they just couldn't seem to put out something that sucked. They definitely had their issues too. Stupid little plastic things that would break on the interior. The dumb little shit in the engine bay, like skinny vacuum lines that'd leak or get brittle and crack. Seems like I was always chasing down something small.

While the issues in the VWs would add up over time, and were I to take it to the dealership it'd cost me plenty for sure. But as a DIY'er it didn't require a lot. Almost all repairs could be done w/o special tools. VAG COM is about the only specialty thing I paid for, out of repairs necessity. OTOH, the BMW's shit, like the intern, it was so intrinsically flawed I couldn't begin to fix it.

For example. I mentioned it before on here, but the BMW was in for warrantied work at least three times. Twice because the tail lights melted down, harnesses melted to nothing. This is an issue plaguing BMW for decades back to the E39 at least IIRC. Both times, I sat at the dealership for hours. No rental. The bills were in the avg ~$4k range. A third time, again with lighting, one of the headlight halos died. I believe that bill was even more than the rear lights.

Fortunately I didn't suffer any mechanical issues with the BMW, but it was eating about 1/2qt of oil between changes so there may've been something looming. Or maybe it's the nature of the beast. My close friend with his '01 550 wasn't so lucky, one of two friends with E39 that had what I think are pretty serious issues. So many stupid mechanical things gone wrong, and nothing ever had a bill less than $3k-5k.

I'd like a p-car some day. I'd driven plenty, two other gearhead friends drive them almost exclusively. But I've never found a killer deal on something I'd jump at to actually own one.

Is this an actual sold product or did some crazy HVAC guy make this?

That appears to be an old coal fired unit that was converted to gas.

 

We call these "Big Money Wasters"
