For the ‘22 year, I say no. I don’t think they’ll be able to produce enough to sell more than previous years. I think year 2, maybe and that’s big maybe. Year 3 and beyond, I think definitely not.

I'm sorry if I'm going to ruffle some feathers, but I want to offer a different opinion on the whole comfort thing...

The bold part of the above quote is why lots of us are disappointed. People seem to value image over everything nowadays. They want a truck with a leveled "stance" that looks tough and capable (never mind that if they put any load in the bed it will squat) but it must be...comfortable??? o_O This just seems bizarre to me. I guess it's the vehicle version of how work boots, Carhartt clothing, and beards have become fashionable. It's cool to look like a ranch hand or lumberjack, but don't ask me to do any actual work.

The new Tundra is a great tow vehicle for small loads, but it suffers from the same payload issue the 2nd gen suffered from: according to the door jamb, it can't handle the tongue weight of loads it is rated to pull, especially if you have anyone else in the truck with your or some gear in the bed. This is EXTREMELY disappointing, and to me it just shows that the people who value comfort over everything won. This is at least part of why Toyota has, over time, pulled their most capable platforms (Hilux, Land Cruiser) out of North America. The Tacoma is NOTHING like a 1-ton Hilux. The 4runner is basically a Land Cruiser Prado, but we never had the 79 series LC, and we just lost true LCs altogether.

I think the gen 3 drivetrain is great. I have opinions on the looks, but those don't matter. After 15 years of fuel economy and payload complaints, you'd think Toyota would have moved the ball further down the field. Especially considering that the gen 2 debuted well out in front of the pack. Some of us – who value reliability first and capability second – aren't thrilled with the growing disparity between the Toyotas of the rest of the world and the Toyotas of the North American market.

i agree with what you are saying. These are the things that I can live with but should not have to with a new from ground up truck: less comfortable seats (smaller) than previous years and competition, less cabin space than anyone else making full size trucks, increase in hood length and decrease in turning radius, plastic bed is not an issue for me, exaggerated hump in floor not needed for non hybrid power plants (hump goes nowhere look at photos), overall length of truck was increased but we don’t get a bigger bed or interior space.

Things that I can’t live with therefore I have moved on: plastic bumpers (TFL) already ripped their rear bumper off, no tow hooks (how do I off road with my buddies when I can’t help them or help myself in need), no ability to add front tow hook without changing and cutting off the front plastic end, the double chin bumper is too low so u have to lift the truck with additional suspension mods ($$$) for an already expensive undervalued product, 20” off road wheels, new steel bumpers solve everything but then adds more weight and money (insurance company) might not cover you with an aftermarket steel bumper, the sensors might not work properly and Toyota might not cover your modifications so good luck with warranty claims, no Torsen front diff or equal, no 4 auto, the new 22 regular TRD weighs more than the competition, the new TRD PRO will weigh more than the competition, the horsepower and torque is under the competition, the turbos are not as reliable as everyone thought (this is a big deal as in the past people sacrificed much for impetuous Toyota reliability).

Someone at Toyota designed this truck without thinking about who is using this truck as a truck. They wanted a cute truck (I do like the styling inside and out A LOT). They simply did not think about us that want to go to work and play hard on the outdoors. If you want to play hard in the outdoors you have to spend another $15k in mods (wheels, tires, suspension, new bumpers) which then brings you closer to other bad ass truck like Raptor or TRX. I for one have moved on unfortunately. I’m not spending $60k on a truck then add another $15k to play and throw away new tires and bumpers and suspension.

The only way Toyota will listen is to send them your complaints, send it to corporate or voice your honest truth here. Or don’t buy, then maybe they will start to look through this forum for some answers on the shortcomings. It’s simple.

But then again they don’t need the Tundra to be that successful or stay in the competition, they make plenty of money with other cars and other models. They went after people that need a good truck that stay on pavement. You can turn it into a serious off roader but get ready to spend some $$$!

We can’t talk about reliability yet, it’s too soon, this is the one equalizer and what Toyota always got right and led to great long term value in the past. It doesn’t appear to have this value yet but we shall see.

Agree with you on this. Toyota USA has taken a far departure from global Toyota products. I don't think a 79 series LC would sell well here at all. Not enough creature comfort for the masses. I do however wish they brought some of the ethos their Australian offered to the US. Personally I don't know how the Tundra ended up at such a low payload number considering their frame is fully boxed and 20-30% stronger. The focus on soft spring rates and increased weight of the truck definitely ate into the payload. I'm not sure how large the brakes are in comparison to gen 2.5. Toyota knows how to build a capable truck as shown with their global trucks however they decided the US market didn't deserve or want those things. I'm not sure if this comes from Mr. T himself or if this is a Mike Sweers thing.

The kicker is that the Ford is beating Toyota at their own game and the Ford Ranger prime example of what Toyota should have done. The Ranger is designed and engineered by Ford Australia and built for the global market. It's a Hilux competitor and beater and even in its current form with the T6 Ranger that has been out since 2011 globally it beats the pants off the 3rd gen Taco. Wait until we see the 2023 Ford Ranger and Ranger Raptor in the US. The US only spec'd Tacoma is going to seem pretty pathetic compared to it and given what Toyota did with the 3rd gen Tundra I have little hope that the Gen 4 Tacoma will be competitive. Even the current Ranger has a payload of 1600lbs. The other sad part is that Toyota has a great relationship with ARB in the international market but in the US it's not much to speak of. Toyota USA wants big, bulky plastic bumper with multiple lines that make it pretty difficult for 3rd parties to design proper bumpers for them. Meanwhile the Ford Ranger has clean, straight bumper lines and they are working directly with ARB to have OEM quality and OEM spec accessories immediately upon release. There is a great difference in engineering and crash rating when it comes to ARB or AEV products vs C4, CBI, or Victory 4x4 (no offense to them). It's pathetic that Ford USA will have a better working relationship with ARB than Toyota USA.

You ain’t wrong, but the angle of the hood of that Ranger is a hard-no from me. Maybe the Ranger Raptor, but the regular, sheesh…..

I don't disagree with your post but, from what I've seen, this tends to be true of every halfton except those mythical max payload package F150s that you have to custom order.

The two F150s I see the most, my father-in-law's and a coworker's, are 4x4 Supercrew short beds (very comparable to an SR5 crewmax), and they have 1838 and 2013 lbs of payload respectively. GM has half-ton 4x4 crew cab trucks with 2k lbs of payload as well. Don't know about Ram half-tons, but all the domestics offer HD trucks, too.

I still don't want to buy a domestic, especially a Ford. If Toyota would offer a heavy duty payload package, it would help me avoid what is seeming more and more inevitable when it comes time to buy my next truck.

The truck doesn’t weigh more compared to my 2012. I weighed my 2012 on a Cat Scale and after subtracting my weight, the Leer shell, and some other stuff, I came up with a curb weight of around 5660 lbs. This was a base double cab with no options other than skid plates. I have seen a Cat Scale weight (posted in this forum) of a 2022 DC SR5 whose curb weight was ~5600 lbs with a calculated payload of 1665 lbs vs the sticker payload of 1404 lbs. Toyota seems to be using the maximum curb weight estimate for a particular base configuration plus all possible options and calculating payload from that number. Toyota is not weighing each truck as it comes off the assembly line, so the sticker payload is the least payload that VIN could have and not calculated by subtracting actual curb weight from the listed GVWR. Unfortunately that means the sticker is not much help if it could be 261 lbs off as in this case.

Maybe keep it on the radar for the '23 model year if you can hang with the Gen1 for another year. Gen3 does have the sweet Crawl Control and rear locker for about $3500 on an SR5. Turning circle increased, but you can slap 35's on easily. I'm kinda torn about the 3G Sequoia and follow the Tundra threads because they're the same vehicle in many ways. Lack of tow hooks and no 4Auto is disappointing.

We require something fullsize and reliable and I'm not seeing reliability from Ford and GM. Recurring drivetrain problems on both. 3G Sequoia is still on the radar, I'll maybe buy used in a few years. I surely would like 5MPG better.

All new cars suck ass what do you guys expect?

What part of "V6 twin tarbo hybrid" didn't make you immediately throw it into the garbage? Or the styling that looks like a toyota tacoma's retarded cousin?

You WILL buy the new truck for $50,000 and you WILL like it.

And yes, I did skip to the last page without reading anything but the first post. :p

Seriously wondering what they need to "get in line" for. The dealer across the street from me has 15 lined up in front of their store and the salesman that's helping me calls every other day to get me to buy one.

I don't know. Are they selling over sticker? My local dealer has everything inbound sold until May. They have zero inbound trucks that don't have a deposit on them... They are taking info on what people want and calling them once one shows up allocated to them.

Literally was just there a few hours ago with one of the aforementioned buddies.

You are correct but I feel as if every day and ever since the launch of the new tundra people dog on it every which way. It’s simple if you don’t like it go to the other big three. Every week someone comments or posts how much they hate it and their disappointment. It just clutters up the forums. I understand the want to share your opinion and how your experience went but damn I feel as if all I ever read on here is “no towhooks” “terrible redesign” “payload sucks” and so on it gets repetitive and tiresome to read.
