Hey guys was hoping someone could help confirm what this ticking noise is in the videos. It comes and goes and the truck is at the dealership right now but say they don't know what it is. I think it's a timing chain tensioner as the title says you can hear it best on the passenger side but it can be heard inside the cab from the driver side hell 10ft away from the truck Truck has 59880 miles on it and powertrain warrenty runs out at 60000 if anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated

@frichco228 any idea on what that would be? To me it sounds like it's coming from the rear of the engine on the passenger side. The dealership technician says using his stethoscope that it was coming from the fuel rail. The dealership has told me that they have gone in and looked at the lifters and they looked fine but now the truck won't make the noise again since it's warmed up some here in Florida I drove it yesterday to try and get it to make the noise and wouldn't do it the technician let's it idle for good amount of time and has only heard it once. But it was reoccurring almost every time I would drive the Truck when it was cold.

@frichco228 okay I see I went to the video actual YouTube and see that it's a timing tensioner see that's what I thought but the tech says that from where he can hear the noise(Fuel Rail) that it can't be that. I'm at a loss thinking about taking it to another dealership.

Watching the threads and videos , I get the feeling that the timing chain tensioners are intermittently not doing what they are suppose to do and that causes all this ticking. Older models have it more than newer ones. With so many people seeing this issue there should have been a recall and replacement with better working tensioners. Some used higher viscosity oil like 10W30 and it went away, others used seafoam to clean out possible sludge build-up and it went away, others had no success. My previous 2012 had a bit of ticking with 140.000 miles but it got worse to a clacking a week after I sold it. both driver or passenger side can be affected. I personally think it has to do with the oil choice and oil pressure which is in correlation with temperature.

    Pretty things
Since you are still under warranty, I would definitely get second (Toyota) opinion.

That sounds very aggressive for a fuel injector. And if the tech thought the noise was coming from the rail, why would he not immediately listen to each injector to verify if one is indeed (much) louder than the others. This seems much easier than ripping the valve covers off to inspect lifters that he apparently didn't think were the issue... wouldn't it be more of a chain slap issue anyway if the tensioner (between cam phasers) were not keeping the chain tight.?

Maybe another tech (and dealership) can correctly diagnose the issue and fix it while still under warranty
