I don’t think anyone can say that it was just a bad batch at the beginning of production as TFL hasn’t reported any problems with theirs and they were one of the first to have a 3rd gen .

 

It will be interesting to see if Toyota does link this to a bad batch of parts and actually issues a recall to address it. Although not as major as this issue, Toyota went 15 model years not doing anything about the cam tower leak on the 5.7s other than fixing under warranty. Maybe the folks having this issue with such low miles are lucky it's showing up early—I'd hate to have one and wonder whether this issue pops up a few years down the road outside of warranty and get stuck with a massive repair bill.

It seems the failures have been very early, 100-1000 mile range. Also the tech comments about the failure seems to show that right from the begging there is a part issue where the wastage does not have free movement, grinding onto something or rubbing, causing the wastegate to bind or not move causing the CEL.

Point is that the wastegate either is defective, where it will rub and fail really early, or it is okay. Most failures have been really early, so my 2k mile milestone means if I had a defective part, it would have shown itself

 

I understand where you are coming from. However, there could be batch of produced parts on a certain date that will only affect certain cars, and not necessarily in the chronological order.

PS: I propose people who have the issue post the pictures of the part numbers. This could be useful. You do this from the wheel wells. You can clearly see the part numbers from there. Here is my turbo number. It contains more than just the part number. I think the other long digit sequence may be related to time, day, where, when, and by whom.

 

First one I’ve read about bad wastegate and burning oil (yes, I know it’s FB..). Looking at these guys profiles I’d say they are legit 2022 Tundra owners though. Hopefully he eventually follows up with the why behind it burning oil.

Interesting. Think realistically, adopt Where this is smoke-must be a fire. What should be determined is it a forest fire? My perspective, build date 12/7. At 1100 miles, 90% around town. No Issues and no Oil burning issues.

 

So what is the failure window @Tundra-G is referring to?


How sure can we be there is a defined “failure window?” People seem to be inferring that if you make it to X miles you can stop crossing your fingers as that somehow indicates your turbos are solid and won’t develop the issues later. I just don’t follow that logic.

Is it possible that most 22’s only have a few hundred to a few thousands of miles on them and therefore that is the “failure window”?

 

More often then not they seem to fail under 500 miles but the highest I remember seeing was 2,400. But most people have less then 2,000 miles on there trucks sooo.. who knows.

 

I think that guy on youtube that beats on his truck has around 13k on his, i think.

 

Let me say it in a different way. I think we can all accept that that the vast majority of the 22’s on the road only have a few hundred to a few thousand miles on them. (Average US Driver 14K per year, majority sold in last 2 months)

If you agree with that and absent further details on the true cause of the wastegate binding up after use, I would question how one can claim that those turbos that fail in the first few hundred to few thousand miles are the only ones that will ever see wastegate binding.

 

Let me answer in another way…there’s not a vehicle out there that is guaranteed not to have a problem, large or small, sometime in their lifetime. If my vehicle is going to have a problem I prefer it’s earlier, not later.

 

Yeah man there's just 44 pages of people filling gaps because we don't have the info and everyone is throwing numbers and whatever else around. People making claims that first years have extra problems and not presenting any factual evidence around that. And even if they do and this is too much to bear, wait a year and move on already.
Like buy the truck or don't, this horse is so past dead.

 

Yeah even my attempt to get posts in the 3rd Gen turbo failure thread to track it has been frustrating.

It is stickied, easy to find, pretty strait forward… and only a handful of members with problems have posted. Too bad we can’t compile data, even a small data set is better than no data set to try to base conclusions from.

Instead we just have conjecture and guessing going on.

 

I was thinking about making a deposit soon since it has been quiet the last week. Today, I saw a post here and another one on FB.

 

Man that would be frustrating.

I have close to a million miles in other Toyota models as well as last generation. Some pushing 300K miles. With regular maintenance all problems were small. Maybe I was just lucky, but suspect I wasn’t. Consumer Reports, etc. would back me up on this.

A sudden powertrain failure requiring days in the shop is not a small problem.

 

For many that own one today, and those debating purchasing one, this horse ain’t dead.

 

Which model and gas tank? 22 gallons in the SR5 and SR ain't gonna take long to slurp up....

Keeping in mind it isn't a debate as no party has any relevant information. I've know that the issue exists to some unknown capacity through these forums and social media and I can't see how these 40 odd pages would helped my judgement in any capacity.

Confirmed February build with wastegate failure.

Aside from turbo a new one I'm seeing is the truck shutting off coming into parking. Anyone have that here yet?

Damn one just posted he went over the train tracks and it died. Honestly it sounds like electrical issues are the common denominator. The wastegate was the electrical part, lots of malfunctions for the sensors and now cutting out.

 

geez, WTF. things getting worse not better.
