    Lets agree to disagree.

He’s is asking 2022 Tundra owners: If they, hypothetically speaking, had a 21’ Tundra would they trade it in? The question is directed to the 22’ owners, not 21’ Tundra owners.

you are both off a bit

Op wants comments from 1) real 2022 Tundra owners - that 2) came from real previous Gen 2.5 (specifically 2021)

and I want to know how he likes his TRD exhaust 8^0

I have a 21' TRD Pro and have had 3 other 2nd gen Tundras. I ordered a 22' Limited and backed out due to some of the reliability concerns, the fact that I love the 21' Pro and the fact that the same dealer got a GR86 in that I bought in the meantime. When the 22' Limited I had ordered came in the Sales manager bought it and he let me drive it around a bit with my wife. We both loved it and it is a fantastic improvement in steering feel, ride, interior styling, tech, etc. and I really thought the engine and transmission (which I was worried would be a step back) were actually very nice. Powerful, torquey and the transmission shifts quickly and no hunting of gears which was a fear of mine. Feels a little bit like a diesel and I was very impressed with the entire package.
I was impressed enough that when I came back from the test drive I put my name on the list for a 22' TRD Pro in white over red (at MSRP) as that seems like it would be an appropriate upgrade. I really like the 21' TRD Pro but other than some suspected decrease in ultimate reliability I am thoroughly impressed with the 22' from a pure driving standpoint. Wish I could justify keeping both really.

Yeah, I don't understand why on the new truck the base SR5 doesn't have chrome but if you add the TRD Off-road package you get stuck with a chrome mustache. I think Toyota missed the mark on that one, I can understand doing it on the limited because it already has chrome.

I love the Gen 2 Tundras, they're good trucks and yes they are reliable. But they are essentially a 15 year old truck...

The 2022 feels light years ahead of the old trucks. I've been waiting since 2016 for a new truck because it was getting long in the tooth even back then, and that was 6 whole years ago.

    Biggest improvements:
    Fuel Economy - I'm getting 18-22mpg, I got 17 in my 2021 Tacoma
Power and Responsiveness - feels sportier than the old truck and quicker on it's feet
Tech - Take it or leave it, I like it
Interior - The softex and premium audio are very, very nice
TSS - The latest TSS with lane keep assist and the cruise control system is great for long drives
    Suspension - Way WAY smoother
Doesn't feel like a massive bulbous truck when driving it, light on its feet

    Cons:
It's a new truck, there are going to be some bugs. But I trust the engineering and most issues are from parts makers
    Tow hooks :deadhorse:
No where to step getting in the bed
Price is much higher than the last gen, but you get a lot more
The front chrome mustache on my truck makes me want to puke

All in all, I've been waiting for this thing since 2016, and I'm happy with what I got

I agree with all of your thoughts and as a 2022 owner I am impressed with the truck. It's fun to drive.

How's the GR86? Would love to have one in the garage sometime soon

Congrats on the new ride. I never use the lane departure alert or adaptive cruise control on my truck. If I hold down the cruise button, it will go to standard cruise control. Do the ‘22s do this? And I wonder if the TSS stuff is more intrusive on the ‘22s. I had to call and opt out of Toyota basically following my every move and tracking all kinds of data on my truck. Have any of you ‘22 owners done that?

You can opt out of them tracking you and collecting data when you create your profile for the truck and connect your phone.

Yes, this has the latest TSS. I drive a lot and leave all the nannies on. My '21 Tacoma did not have lane keep assist, it would just beep at you when you left your lane. The Tundra will steer you back and keep you between the lines.

As far as cruise, this new system is so much better than the one I had in my Tacoma. If you set it to follow the car in front of you, it will follow the car and keep distance the whole way to a complete stop without any jerking. The Tacomas would cut out below 27mph. I am not sure if you hold down the cruise button it'll change it, I'll have to look, but I like the system as it is

Glad you can still opt out of tracking and data collection. I guess I’m just curious if I’ll still be able to disable all that stuff when I get into a 3rd gen several years from now...or will driving be a far more hands-off process?

I drive a lot, too. 24k miles already on my ‘21. My perspective on the “helpful” tech is that when I’m less engaged in the driving process, I’m less aware, and over time, I become reliant on that stuff and become a worse driver because of it. It’s not just a Toyota thing; everyone is headed that way. I mean, look at Tesla. I just really enjoy driving and all that goes with it. Including keeping my vehicle in my own lane myself.

Yeah I see where you're getting at. I'm typically not the type to enjoy the nannies but they're really streamlined and smooth now. I've been putting on about 50k miles a year so I just got used to all of it. If you're coming from the '21 you had the same system I had in my Tacoma I think, and this new one is way better. I kind of agree when you say they can make you a worse driver though

Teslas are cool. The one time I drove one I drove it without any of the nannies. Their quality isn't... great... but they're a self described tech company not a car company. And they drive innovation that carries over to other manufacturers which is cool.

I have zero regrets getting the '22. I think it's top notch so far and will only get better as the supply chain and QC issues with parts suppliers improve

I would keep the 2.5, so from what I've seen 3 gen has worse turning radius, no step up on back bumper, smaller intrerior, slanted front windshield, no front tow hooks, piped in engine sound. I'll keep my 2020 Pro I have everything I need. I was expecting more from the new truck.

I own a 2022 Limited. I test drove a 2016 Tundra when I was in the market for my last vehicle and recall it feeling dated compared to the competition at the time. I wanted a Toyota truck then, but just couldn't justify it against the price and features of the American truck competition.

Fast forward to 2022 and the new Tundra has closed the gap significantly. The new truck is hands down an upgrade over the old one in my view.

Is it enough to warrant upgrading after only 1 year of ownership? It wouldn't be under pre-covid circumstances. However in this crazy market you may be getting a value proposition on your 2021 trade in that makes it an easy decision. I think the economic situation of over inflated used car prices will last for many months. Maybe a even a year or more. So having said all that I would not rush into a 2022 unless it was a deal set to expire today that is just too good to pass up. But definitely keep an open mind about upgrading down the line because it is an upgraded vehicle and the value of your 2021 will probably stay high for a while yet to come.

The 2022 has slightly less space to add more structural rigidity, therefore is much safer now.

The previous gen had the worst safety rating.

That said, the 2nd gen is still great truck, just the 2022 is improved in every way.

GR86 is quite an upgrade and is the perfect example of an evolution rather than trying to be a revolution. Fixed everything I didn't like about my 13' FRS and at around $33k for a loaded premium it actually seems like quite a bit of fun/$ compared to most sports cars I have looked at recently. The GR86 evolution is the equivalent as to if the 22' Tundra had the upgraded tech, really looked better (color matched grill!) and had a 7.1 liter naturally aspirated V8 with 500hp and 550 lb/ft of torque, and came stock with Fox shocks and 35" KO2 or Ridge Grapplers!

I did forget to add in my little analysis is the only reason I am still considering upgrading to the 22' TRD Pro is that this supply chain and COVID craze has made it financially more attractive. My 21' is worth more than I paid for it on trade or to Carmax (for the moment) vs MSRP on a new truck. I wouldn't consider trading for traditional pre-pandemic wholesale trade in value on my 21' (i.e. 10k less than I paid for it).

Of course 22 owners are going to say get the 22 and 2.5 gen are going to tell you to stick with what you got.

I can say this. The 22 in certain trim combos looks good but it looks more like a Tacoma. Tech and new bed along with the 6.5 with crewmax is definitely a big improvement. However, in my experience and granted I drove an SR5 with small screen, I was not impressed. Smaller interior. Cockpit like feel. Tech that may or may not have problems. I didn't have a dual moon roof so I'm sure that would make it feel larger. This model was cloth and I did not like the new cloth felt cheaper. Sat in back seat it felt smaller but still large since it was a crewmax.

For all the new tech it still uses similar Toyota safety sense. Just has more cameras and a larger screen.

Something about the new truck I drove made it feel more like Toyotas car/suv line up than a truck. Both in how it drove, no V8 roar, and the way the entertainment screen just stuck straight up.

Lastly, and this may change if I see a TRD pro but overall appearance/presence doesn't give me the wow factor. I've seen a few of the 22 tundras and not taken back by them.

I still have a 22 TRD pro on pre order, a 22 raptor on pre order, and an F250 king ranch tremor on order. I will probably be going with the king ranch F250 as I've been looking at larger toy haulers and would then require a diesel. However if all 3 showed up today I'd probably test drive them all and choose the raptor.

The MPG shouldn't affect your decision much. In a couple years gas will be back to $2/gal

Yes, if you hold down the cruise control button for a few seconds, it turns the adaptive CC off and you get regular CC.

I was able to opt out of data collection through the Toyota app.

Yes the used market is crazy. I don't understand it why things are priced the way they are but I've been taking advantage of it.

I bought a 2016 Tacoma new and paid $32,000, sold last May for $32,100
I then got a 2021 Tacoma to wait out for this new Tundra. Paid $37,500 OTD and traded in for $38,500

It depends how much you value the new tech and engine if you have a 2nd gen and are looking to make the jump. It was definitely worth the $10-12k bump in price over the Gen 2 to me. Now would be the time to do it because I'm sure many people are in the same situation as you with vehicles that are worth more than what they paid.

    Crazy times

Good moves! I have always traded pretty frequently but definitely have been taking advantage of the market myself. 2020 Supra, 2019 ZL1, 21' Land Cruiser Heritage, 21' Civic Type R, 21' RAV4 Prime, 21' TRD Pro Tundra, and 22' GR86. At worst I drove them for free, but made quite a few bucks on ones like the LC and Type-R for buying at MSRP or less and selling when the market dried up are were hot. Still have a 2016 4R Limited, and the RAV4 Prime to go along with the 86 and Tundra. The Prime is what got me most interested in feeling interested in going to the new tech in the Tundra....the Prime is a very impressive daily.

I imagine these times are coming to an end here soon, but still think my order for one of the first 22' TRD Pro tundras at MSRP is a safe bet for the short term. I know many here are looking for a truck to keep for 10+ years and respect that so try not to post too often about my skewed opinions/objectives....I guess you could say I am here for a good time not a long time.

You put a new head unit in and a S/C under the hood and you'll be saying "What 22 Tundra?"

Probably be spending less overall also.
