I Have a reservation for a Green SR5 Crewmax with the Off-Road Premium Package that was supposed to be built on 15 Feb. I called last week and its been delayed until 7 March with a new delivery date of Mid April...for now. Another dealership since called me and they have exact build coming in next week with and extra feature or two. I'm okay with the addition of the bed step and spray in bed liner, i could go either way on them, but what I'm having a hard time with is the addition of the ETCH anti theft and Tundra protection package. Are these worth a damn or is anyone familiar with these? That seems quite overpriced. Would you guys settle with $3000 in extras that are meh at best? I've already tried to get them to drop them and they refused and said at least we're not charging for dealer markup.Capture.jpg

You're not wrong for protesting the added BS, I would personally tell them to pound sand.

Those are the dealership markups. It does nothing but let them charge you more.

The Etch is unnecessary with how difficult stealing a modern vehicle and your insurance is probably fine. The "Protection Package" basically reads like a $2500 windshield with a little protection film. Through Toyota's website a heated steering wheel is $150 and that list says $320.

It might as well be dealer mark-up. I'd wait, personally.

Is your current vehicle literally out of service?

If the answer to that question is “no”, my suggestion is to wait until dealers need to actually sell cars and trucks and compete on price.

2500 for some crappy windshield coating and door edge guards would be a big NO for me. That's absurd!

It depends on your build my build sheet has the heated steering wheel listed at 320 and Toyota’s website also for the SR5 it depends the model you choose and the options I think the platinum and Limited’s are only 150 the SR5s are 320

If it's helpful, I once bought a car where the dealership had added the etch security thing and it didn't reduce my insurance or anything like that. There were a couple security measures they did give credit for but that wasn't one of them.

Personally, I'd pass. I can see settling for add ons you may not have asked for but would use; those are useless! That is a dealer mark-up called something else.

Definitely pure profit for the dealer.

Thanks for all the replies. It was never about price, it was about value. Since the the overwhelming response is that these products are garbage it helps to look at is as dealer markup by another name. Because these seem pretty worthless.

Windshield protection film (Exoshield for one) typically runs $500 and “may” save you from chips and cracks.

Talked to the salesman there earlier, I told him I have the exact truck on order for over 3000 less. He said everyone was doing and this way you still get something in stead of a markup. I told him thats not true and we all know who does and doesn't do mark up. He then implied that they were under pressure from other dealerships to have something similar to a markup so they can be on even ground. It kept them in good relations for trades and other BS......how is that not illegal? Isn't that price fixing?

Sounds like price fixing which is illegal. You could refer them to your state attorney general.
