FGT vs 3G Tacoma Size (pics)

I just happened to park next to another guy at work who has a Tacoma TRD Pro. I know a lot of people with 3G tacos that are looking for more power find themselves searching for FGTs, so I thought these pics might be interesting that some folks. For reference, the Tundra has 3/1 lift on 33s.

 

1st gen Tundra is generally bigger? In these pics it looks quite larger, but is that camera angle?

 

Until I parked next to this one, I actually thought they were relatively close in size. In person, the FGT (lifted, of course) is quite a bit bigger.

 

Access cabs FGTs and Double Cab 3G tacomas have an almost identical wheel base. I think there is only a 1 inch difference length wise.

6 Foot bed on an access cab versus I think 4 foot or 5.5 foot bed on the double cab Tacoma. I wished I had side profile pictures of wyatts old truck. This is all I have.

Without a scratch. A little sore from the seatbelt, but other than that physically unharmed.

Wyatt was going less than 15 Mph when he flipped. He was taking a sharp curve on an icy road. He turned his wheels and the truck kept tracking straight. Drove straight over an embankment, and then rolled really really slowly. Kinda anti-climactically. I'll see if I can dig up some posts about it. This is back when I got a room in town to avoid an accident like this...

 

My red cab is roughly the same size as a DC king bed taco. I feel the 1st gen tundras are the perfect size for a 1/2 ton.

these modern ones are just too damn big. Feel like minivans with a bed attached.

Coming from a 3rd gen Taco, I appreciate actually being able to carry people in the back seat, lay plywood down flat in the bed, actually having power to get on the freeway, and power to tow things and honestly very similar fuel economy.

 

Yeah coming from a 3rd Gen Taco myself, the power difference was immediately noticeable. Low end torque feel is tremendously stronger in the 04 Tundie.

I also always thought they are basically the same size, but the Tundra interior is roomier because it doesn't have all the thick plastic panels and doodads that crowd the walls of the Tacoma. Now I'm seeing how the Tundra has a lower floor and taller ceiling, and how it's actually a tad wider overall.

 

Looks a little like it's trying to distance itself from your truck. Like Jeremy Clarkson said "It's as bad as getting next to a horse at the urinal"

The V6 scoots, or wyatts new TRD pro scoots. Doesn't feel like as much power as the v8 though...

 

I have both a 2G DCSB Tacoma and a FGT Double Cab. I know people say they're the same size but they're really not. The Tundra is probably 3-4" wider depending on where you measure from and the cab is at least 3" taller. The interior cab space is also much better and an average adult can fit in the 2nd row unlike the Taco. It also drives quite a bit bigger because of the poor turning radius. Quality wise the Tundra is a bit better. The doors, panels, bed and tailgate all feel heftier. The Tacoma is a good truck but definitely not built to the same quality as the Tundra.

Speaking of Americanized… my colleagues love their “in your face” cars/trucks. At least the guys with Raptors and TRX’s park between the lines for the most part. The exotics tend to park sideways across two spaces

 

I'm not into the wild styling of a lot of recent trucks. All these cosmetic styling cues that scream "I'm a badass truck" remind me of when the X-Games came out and suddenly everything was called "xtreme" as if forgetting how to spell made things genuinely hard-core.

Long sentence I know. I do like the Tacoma styling on the 2nd gen. 3rd gen (can we really call it that? We know what happened to the trans-gen tundra) are a bit overcooked in my opinion.

 

Totally. I'm with you on the 90s X-games reference lol The 2nd gen Taco and the 5th gen 4Runner are about as extreme as I'm comfortable with. But then again, I change my mind a lot so who knows what'll be next for me. Been eyeing the 3rd gen Tundra, and if they bring back the color cement, I'll probably get one.

 

Love that Tundra. I miss my '06 - The Old Gray Mare - even as I love my '20. When I was shopping in late '19 I didn't want to exclude a Taco out of hand, so I test drove one. The seats are smaller, and they feel smaller inside generally. I know that's not a concern for a lot of folks, but it mattered to me.

 

Sounds like the typical Physicians parking lot with Raptors, TRX's, german cars and Land Cruisers

Just curious, what specialty are you in?

 

Do indeed remember the double cabs are noticeably taller and longer than the access abs reg cab tundras. The double cabs are odd balls stuck between the 1st and 2nd gen tundras size wise and share no sheet metal between the 2

My dad has a 3" lifted on 33" tires 2021 TRD Taco. My truck is levelled ~2" front lift 2006 DC TRD on stockish sized tires. His truck is around the same height as mine, but in every other dimention the Tundra is bigger. I especially love having a full size bed, lots of interior room, but still small enough to park in my garage.

I will take my Tundra any day of the week over a Taco. I also have a 2016 extended cab F250, and would still rather drive the Tundra.

It actually doesn't look that much smaller than the new Tundra. As with most new trucks and especially Toyota's, there's a lot of extra hanging low bits and trim that probably aren't functional. Apparently the 3rd gen is a tad smaller than gen 2.5 both outside and inside which makes it a bit closer in size to the FGT. I'm the inside feels a bit more roomier than the FGT though.

 

This is with the 1st gen having 1+ft more bed length?

I hate the front mustache on the 3rd Gen but functionally it's irrelevant. But the rear bumper is just terrible. Why purposely remove bumper stepping space?

 

Such a nice Gen 1 love the simple-yet-not stock looks of it. Gen 1 is probably one of the best looking trucks ever made, compared next to Gen 3 it only reinforces my thinking.

 

Results are in...FGT is a better truck for truck things!!! I do like the 3rd gens though and think the platform will mature well over time.

The new crew cab Tundra is 1.5-2 ft longer? Jeez. I hope he meant with the 6.5' box.

 

His numbers are definitely off. Toyota’s published length on the 2022 Tundra CM short bed is 233” and CM long bed is 245”.
