Just curious. I’m heading off-road soon for the first time in my new (to me) ‘18 Tundra 1794 to do some astrophotography work. Will set up deep in Nevada’s Massacre Ridge wilderness area (one of the most remote places in the continental U.S. and among the darkest skies anywhere. Bortle 1 for over 200 miles).

    awesome!

I don’t actually use a telescope for my astro work. Just a DSLR with a f1.8 16mm for wide angled Milky Way shots, and an f4 150-600mm for deep space objects. This trip will be mostly deep space - galaxies and nebulas for the most part. All mounted on an equatorial mount so I can thousands of frames and then merge/stack them into one afterwards.

Tks, I have a few on this device, but most of my photos are stored on a separate drive/ computer not connected to this one. I’ll dig up a few more!

I’m envious of yall near the Northern Lights. I’ve been trying to get up there for a decade.

One year when we were in Iowa in the Winter the Aurora could be seen in the Northern Skies, it was very cool indeed to see that especially in Iowa in the Tundra Cornfields!!!:)

It’s a terribly done photo. Pixelated and not stacked. But it was a spur of the moment thing. A couple miles off-road of highway 1 in my old 4runner last year: California central coast about halfway between Monterey and San Luis Obispo. Had to find an area off-road that was sufficiently blocked by the mountain ranges on both sides to drown out the light from those cities enough to shoot it, much less even see the Milky Way.

A friend of mine is big into this. He takes pictures with a telescope hooked up to a computer that tracks the night sky. Hundreds of frames with long exposure over a full night to get a single picture. He gets pictures of galaxies and nebula that are really cool.

Yep, that's the direction I'm going towards too. It's a tremendously expensive hobby...as if modding our Tundras wasn't enough :D It's also painfully challenging to do. But tremendously rewarding when you get to an amazing photo of an object 34 million light years away :)

It's expensive for sure. His telescope in a "low end" one at $6500 or so iirc. LOL. He's always bitching about the weather too. Guess there hasn't been a fully clear night for a long time. No idea. I'm asleep. :D

Clouds are the bane of our existence. It's a very real problem. One of the reasons why I've had to scratch so many trips at the last minute. I've even been halfway out (4 hours), only to turn around because the clouds decided to come in at my destination another 5-6 hours ahead. It ruins it.

Great thres. Nothing to add to the discussion yet, but I'm actively sourcing a used 8" dobsonian so we can get the kids into it with us. Trips to Maine have really made us all interested in what we can see.

Got it, not the best option for photography, but it'll help us decide if we want to get into the automatica or not.

Will be watching this thread for your awesome photos

I have a few late season add on's to add to the thread along with the Maksutov scope and cam we've been using. I don't remember the green nebula's name but the galaxy is our nearest which is Andromeda

I was able to get my hands on a Questar 3.5. My old high school math teacher and astronomy club leader retired and after his kids said they didn’t want the scope he offered it to me. So I took the money out of the tundra’s lift kit fund and bought it. What a scope! I got a cell phone attachment and snapped these photos the other week through it. I’m now looking for a ZWO digital camera, guess there goes the new fuel wheels I was considering. IMG_4237.jpg IMG_4272.jpg IMG_4270.jpg

I'm a big fan of night photography, but astrophotography is a whole different ballgame.

I'm poor and impatient. I do afocal photography with a Pixel 7 pro using night sight. 4:02 of exposure time and the phone does the stacking. Bortle 4 skies here in Ohio and Alabama where we go for the winter.PXL_20240329_014258938.NIGHT~2.jpg
