Tundra Down - Final Farewell Most Likely

Hey all, pretty terrible day yesterday. I hit some ice or a wetspot, and might’ve gone a little too fast around a turn, but I drove normally and have never had a problem on that road. Long story short, I fishtailed, the back end completely spun, I hit a dirt embankment on the side of the road, and the tundra then flipped on its roof. Me and the passanger are alright, with no real injuries whatsoever (just minor cuts, bruises, and soreness). I mean I like to think the tundra did its job, and it saved our lives, so I am definitely thankful. So at this point, truck is almost definitely totaled, and you’ll see what I mean when you see the pics. I’m not sure what insurance is gonna do regarding it, since getting money from the insurance company might not be worth the higher monthly payments if they hold this accident against me, so I’m not sure what’s going to come of it next. At least I was able to go and get all my stuff out of it, including my stereo, amp, speakers, and some LED bulbs I had recently put in. Wanted to look at newer tacomas or if I could find a good first gen, but they’re hard to come by around me (rust belt) for a good price without low(ish) mileage, rust, and some other things.At least I won’t be able to find another like mine, a LTD 4x4 AC which had 109k, little rust (which I in a way remedied), in almost awesome cosmetic shape, besides another accident where I got hit (not my fault), which was supposed to actually get fixed next week. At least the family has another car, which I can use in the meantime. Sucks for sure, and I’m going to miss the truck dearly, as there is nothing quite like it. Spent a lot of time and money into it trying to keep it running and looking like new, just to have it all pissed away at the snap of my fingers, but I guess that kinda stuff happens in life, so I kinda just have to pick it on up and keep moving forward. Some or a lot of people might’ve had something like this happen to your tundra or another car you liked, so you might be able to relate to how frustrating and upsetting it is. Anyways, just thought I would share this with you guys, and I wanted to thank everyone for the help they’ve provided over the period of time I’ve owned this truck. I put 11k miles on the truck in a little over a year, and I can say that it was trouble free and has successfully served me well. I’d like to think it would’ve kept going for a while longer, given the condition it was in, but I guess we shall never know. ive totalled my fair share of cars, young and dumb...youll find another and make it yours!

I will say, when i have totaled a car, insurance took into account the stereo and speaker upgrades......and ACTUALLY made me put them back in the car the time i took them before the claims guy took a look at the car and assess the value...i was pissed, i had just installed all that as well.
Not saying that is your case, but just hold on to that stuff in case they come asking.

Glad your OK. Buy it back from insurance and part it out. If the frame is good and straight, there will be a nice chunk right there

If you take the payout, make sure you investigate local comps too. They'll find the shittiest, highest mileage, worst condition ones for comps. That truck may bring $12-15k in that condition (pre-accident). Glad to hear everyone is ok.

 

Sorry to hear about that, but glad you're OK. I had something similar happen to me a little over 20 years ago. An invisible slick spot in the road, in a curve, in 60 degree weather. The pavement was so slick I could slide over it in my shoes.

 

The truck did good. Hope you find a decent replacement

All my vehicles have salvage titles. I don't think I'd even want to own a non salvage vehicle at this point.

 

Joking aside, sorry about your truck. Looks like she was awesome. I would get to work getting finding comps and fighting the insurance to pay replacement value. I am not sure that even 12-15k would get a non rusty 100k 4x4 Tundra.

 

Most insurance companies do not consider black ice or icy road conditions as an at-fault incident and wouldn't affect your rates.
Depending on how often icy road conditions are in your region that might be an uphill battle, but if its what happened...i would be pushing for that to be the cause.

Thanks for checking in everyone, it means a lot. Forgot to mention, but if my memory serves me correctly, the ole 4.7 was still purring completely upside down until I shut it down… I bet she would still run if I started her in the tow yard, even though I opened the hood there was ATF everywhere. Prolly blew an external tranny cooler line or the radiator tranny cooler got impacted which caused it to piss ATF everywhere. I’m sure there’s still plenty of good parts to be had from the truck, since it only had 109k on it…

Glad ya'll are okay and as a Salsa Red Pearl owner myself, sad to see one upside down. If we lived closer, I'd have to dicker with ya if insurance company did not come thru adequately.

 

Honestly, I do feel like its a 'secret' super power that lets you own cars for pennies on the dollar.

My first experiance with the magic was with my 93 toyota. Slid on ice, hit a tree. Insurance totaled it out, paid me $4k, which was exactly what I owed on it. I bought it back from them for $600 scrap value. Kept driving it until I could save up the actual repair cost, about $1k....drove it for another 15 years.

End result was my $4000 debt turned into a $1600 debt like magic.
