I have a 2011 Toyota Tundra and it has 200,000 miles and question is can you change the transmission fluid. I was told you don't change the transmission fluid on these Tundra. Thanks

Of course you can but toyota made it a complicated process on purpose so people can screw it up be required to take it to a dealer.

If it's never been done yet, at 200k dont do a flush...honestly I'd almost say do nothing.

But if you really deem it necessary, do a pan drain/refill now and then again another in 5 to 10k. Then again another in 5 to 10k.

I did 3 drain and fills using exactly this method. The most important thing is to make sure is to do it when the trans in cold and the temperature of the fluid that came out and the fluid you’re putting in are the exact same temperature. My truck had around 170K when I did the first one. I plan on doing it one more time at the next oil change. The pic attached is what it looked like at the first change.

Do you recommend dropping the pan and changing the filter also? Thanks for all the replies.

If it were an actual filter and not a screen I would. What scares me about pulling the plan are all the posts I've read about broken bolts.

Does anyone know which ATF WS we should use for our Tundra's? I'm finding multiple part numbers for Toyota ATF WS fluid.

@Landodnal IIRC there is only one Toyo ATF WS fluid. It may have different SKU's depending on the container size or something. If you are very paranoid just call the dealership and ask them for the part number.

No. Do not drop the pan. You will break the bolts.

No need to change the filter, I changed mine at 176k? And it had virtually no material in it

It has a filter, not a screen. I cut mine open and posted the results on several different threads.

Seems like most Toyotas just have a screen. Several members have posted pics of their tundra filters that really do look like traditional trans filters.

I would drop mine if the risk of breaking bolts wasn't so high. There are tons of 300k+ mile transmissions out there...some on original fluid. I don't feel too bad just changing the fluid to keep fresh additives.

You can search my threads and see where I cut mine open, I was the first to do so. There filters are good for the life of the transmission, and can easily handle 20 or 30 times the amount of material mime had at 176k miles. So 176k multiplied by 20 is 3.5 million miles. Thatd be a record lol

My wife’s Sequoia 5.7 had 194,000 mikes when we got it

    it has over 250k now

I’ve changed the trans fluid multiple times without issue. I use Valvoline MaxLife Synthetic ATF which costs about $17 a gallon.

I would recommend having the dealer do a fluid change at 200k, do not do a flush. I had mine done a couple years back and it wasn't bad, maybe $250? That's a full drain and fill. They have to get the transmission to a specific temp range in order to fully drain it. It's the only thing I did not DIY.
