Well it seems like it doesn’t cut that much power based on the picture in the FB page of the dude driving at 69 mph. But I’ve read some posts that said the dealer cleared the code and asked the owner to return if the code returns again. So for some it may be sticky wastegate valve and a weak actuator that will improve over time. So that’s why I’m suggesting the same action.

If the code is for wastegate is stuck closed, then power is reduced to avoid engine damage due to too much boost pressure. There should still be plenty of power to drive.

If the code is for wastegate stuck open, then power is reduced automatically because the turbo can’t build boost. It’s still a 3.5 V6 so there should be enough power to accelerate normally.

I found this out recently, the ECM does a check of the wastegate at start up so if there is really a problem (stuck) the code will return immediately after start-up.

I can't speak from personal experience, how much power is cut, but the one YouTuber who posted a video about it said the power cut was significant.

Seeing 69mph indicated in the speedometer doesn't mean that the truck accelerated to 69 with active CEL, likely the pic was taken soon after it happened.

Nonetheless, a short freeway on ramp, climbing a mountain grade with no shoulders, turning left in front of oncoming traffic, all bad times for power being cut.

I’m sure there are levels of reduced power. I’ll see if I can find a way to trip the reduced power message. I hear unplugging the MAF might do it.

Did the engine power become reduced?

SO my salesperson called me right away today. I'll name the dealer later whether they handle this properly or not. Nevertheless he said he hadnt heard of the problem and he was surprised. I told him that I didnt care and there was no way in hell I wanted to keep this truck. He said he would be able to trade me but he wanted to confirm it was the wastegate issue first. I told him I am not interested in their assessment(however I recognize they need to assess the truck) and that Toyota nor any other OEM ever admits something is wrong until they are FORCED to.

Bottom line-I told him I am not keeping this truck and he can help me trade it or not. He said he had another truck coming in(now I am assuming that later production 22 Tundras do not have this issue-my truck built date is 11/2021) and I could possibly trade for that but he cannot promise anything until the truck is assessed.

I'm going to take it in tommorow AM. No matter what I do not trust the truck. Either another Tundra or I will simply but a GM or Ford is the only solution.

Good luck with all that. Sounds like emotions are running high. Not the best time to make decisions. Remember, it’s just a truck.

I'm not rich. I paid 50k for a truck that has a check engine light at 200 miles. And a wastegate issue that the OEM wont even admit is a problem.

Yes. I am emotional. I'm not in the business of being ripped off. Trust me this truck is history. I've already applied for credit with GM to buy a GMC 1500 Denali and trade in this Tundra if this is not handled to my satisfaction.. I want nothing to do with turbos after this.

This guy is having the same issue as mine https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wC5QMExIPNI

I have a 21 Lariat 502a, SCREW, 5.0, 4x4, sport, pano roof I'd sell ya. But my Tundra Platinum is 60-90 days out. And just found a dealer where I'm #2 on TRD pro list.

The V35A-FTS has two variants, the LS500 engine known as the V35A-FTS ‘17 and the ‘21 for truck applications.

Both use the same engine block, and the same heads.

There are differences but they’re pretty minor, and typically involve the ‘21 truck variant being simplified. With the correct parts you could build either one given a block and a set of heads.

I can deal with roll out issues, shit happens.

Toyota’s response so far is inexcusable. If current owners trucks are screwed up and parts are on back order, the right thing to do is delay production of new trucks so current owners get the parts they already paid for to get their truck back on the road.

Toyota is in “fuck the customers” mode right now, and it’s not a good look.

I mean if it's only 0.1% then it shouldn't be that many parts they're taking from production right?

Exactly. Push back building some new Tundras, take care of your customers.

The reputation of a brand is never harmed by going out of the way to do right by customers. The long term good will is almost priceless compared to earning a reputation for being a bunch of shit heels.

This was my issue with my Ford dealer. I really think Dealers need to advocate for you with the manufacturer. Years ago dealers would do that and when the Mfr (Ford, GM. Etc) would balk at a fix, the good dealers would step up make it right. That seems to not happen anymore. Seems both the dealers and manufacturers saying FU and not standing behind the product.

I would be pissed too, but I would also accept that I chose to buy a first run of a brand new vehicle and should expect an issue here and there. There’s a reason everyone is saying they wouldn’t buy a first year vehicle, they tend to have some growing pains. So buying one and expecting something different doesn’t make sense. Even the 5.7 had issues on arrival. Cam shaft recall for a small number of trucks for incorrectly machined parts I believe. They got it all sorted and it’s a fine motor. Those owners were no doubt pissed as well. If you’re done you’re done. But it’s not any happier over in GMC or Ford land. And those aren’t even first year trucks.

I had a bad run-in with corporate Toyota a while ago on a Solara. They treated me like shit. I have been trying to get past that.... corporations will be corporating.

However, watching Tim from YouTube getting top-notch treatment from Toyota for wigging out door locks, I knew the average Joe would get squat. And it seems average Joe's can go pound sand after coughing up $50k+

Don't know what to do at this point, fact of the matter is that Toyota ain't no worse than anyone else

What to do is publicly and loudly drag Toyota through the mud so to speak when they act this way.

Remember their main claim to marketability is reliability. Tarnish that in public and they have big problems.

If these repairs are takings over 30 days to get parts and fix, people just need to lemon law it....most states have a 30 day rule on repair. The question I have is, when toyota buys back your truck, are they giving you what you owe including dealer markup, or they doing straight book. If its straight book value...there are gonna be a lot of hurt feelings and quick economic decision lessons learned soon.

This will be interesting, if they shut down production for a month or more this could hurt Toyota's reputation and confidence in their new turbo direction. If they would have offered the 5.7 with a 10 speed in this 22 I would have ordered one last month when I test drove it. Loved the truck but just couldn't shake the bad feeling all this new tech and turbos gave me.

So let's go out beyond this initial bad batch of wastegate actuators (if that's the case), is anyone concerned about any other future turbo issues and what appears to be a need to remove the body from the frame to work on the turbo units? That's not something I can handle in my personal garage.

I would be pissed too and glad I have a 2019.....not sure I will invest in a future tundra until the bugs get worked out.

That said, trying diplomatically is te way to go. UNTIL that stops working. The best way to get the attention of the dealers (and then the company) is to provide a negative honest review on line. EVERY dealership lives or dies by those reviews (bonuses are made or lost from them and customer satisfaction surveys). I would post an honest review detailing the ways you tried to remedy the situation and the lack of engagement and see what happens. I can almost guarantee that you will have a call within 24 hours

    UPDATE:

I got my truck back last night 2/9/22 from the dealership. They had to replace the passenger side complete turbo. I dropped off the truck on 1/4/22 for perspective.

I find it very concerning they are only replacing one turbo. I get that its teh one that failed and threw the code, but damn, I would be thinking the drivers side turbo is just a ticking time bomb made from the same batch of sketchy parts, but just hasn't crapped out quite yet

That is how the warranty stuff works my work truck had injector problems and they only changed the bad injector. Separate trips for each faulty injector

totally, thats what would make me concerned with all this shit going on, just waiting for the other turbo to take a shit, knowing my luck right out of warranty, lol.
