Hello, and thanks in advance for any help. I have a 2002 Tundra 4.7 2wd TRD. I took my truck to a mechanic with 257,000 miles on it to have timing belt, water pump, fan pulley, rack and pinion, front brakes, front end replaced, driveline rebuilt, and front shocks 5100 Bilstein put on. NOTHING IS RIGHT.
Truck had no leaks or noises of any kind when went in but now leaks like mad and doesnt sound right.
Day I brought it home brake master cylinder puked all over, power steering dry twice, coolant leaks from back of engine and all radiator hoses(over pressurized I believe), and drivers side Lowder and feels almost like running ruff on drivers side. Also had fluid down drivers side of engine (rear nut and i think drain under exhaust manifold and fluid out of bell housing). Looks like trans fluid and coolant.
Could timing or water pump be problem? I don't think he got air out of any systems and found radiator cap was holding to much pressure after testing it. Also second drive abs light came on for a seconds and went out, brakes fell like slowing truck down and release while driving after hear ping sound.
I know it's a lot but first thing is need to make engine right again before brake, front end, and suspension problems I have now.
What would cause drivers side to leak coolant and oil or Trans fluid only and not passenger side? No codes are set and I keep getting told by mechanic his work is tits but he knows nothing about computer functions or learning process. Bolts seem lose on pulley tensioner for serpentine belt(can spin lock washers). Wire harness also missing bolt to starter area. After almost $7000 or more I am at a loss especially since I am going in for surgery on both shoulders. Need to fix or prove he is at fault without spending a lot more. Then have to fix his suspension and brake work.
PS. COOLANT IS LEAKING FROM REAR TOP ENGINE PASSAGE BEHIND INTAKE MANIFOLD (FROM MOUNTING GASKET). He used no toyota parts. Will upload picks if needed.

Was that mechanic a reputable one you trust? Sound like they don’t know what they were doing and completely ruined your truck.

This sounds like the first issue you need to tackle....

I would take pics; lots of pics to document what issues you're facing before bringing it back to have them fix it or have someone else do it. So you have coolant leaking out of the engine drain cocks? Where is the power steering leaking if it ran dry? That should be obvious to find out.

Yes this mechanic has a good reputation around town. I have been going to him for about 27 years.. Usually I do my own work but after having shoulder issues decided to pay to have truck finished. Like my son was saying "he is a good mechanic not a good technician".
The power steering reservoir went dry after a 15 mile trip. I refilled it and next day drove approximately 20 miles and came back only half inch left in reservoir.
Tick to a transmission shop next day and had drive line line quieted down By them adding red something. Sounded like a lube but they said power stirring was leaking in passenger side boot from new Rack and pinion. Only problem is fluid has not dropped much sense text this is why I think that he did It's not bleed the system.
Power steering pump now has slight wine and will replace.

Think truck can still be saved as long as I catch issues now still runs it's all runs and seeing seems like can be fixed. After years of working on cars and building and building a couple engines I think the timing on driver side is off. Going to pull cam covers and look at marks also have a inspection camera to check for evidence of the culprit. At least no fluid mix yet. Toy dealer took a Quick look and said it was a happy truck. Will probably have to take it back and pay to have a deeper analysis done. They "d me almost $900 just to diagnose problems from 1st mechanic.

If you paid the mechanic with credit card you could dispute the charges. That sucks to hear. Does he have parts and labor warranty?

The shop needs to replace that rack under warranty if it leaks at all within the first 90 days or 1 year whatever the original mechanic warrants. He needs to eat the cost on the reinstall.

Man. It sounds like you got JUKED! I'd expect if you've been going to this person for 27 years, they'll cover their work.

At minimum, it sounds like something in the power steering is leaking, a brake line is leaking, but not in a way that is causing air to enter (?), and coolant leaks. That's freaking insane. You need to document this because if nothing is fixed by the mechanic at THEIR cost, you need to take them to small claims court, and you'll need pictures (evidence) or video to prove your case.

That said, no advice for you, I wouldn't even know where to start. Sounds like it's not our place to decide - sounds like your mechanic needs to figure out what he fecked up and fix it. Only he knows what he did while in there. It's not like these 4.7s are super difficult, they just prefer OEM parts (Denso, Aisin, or Toyota branded) and the rest is following the service manual.

Seems like it's hard to find anyone these days that'll take care of your stuff like it's their own. I have a few jobs I wouldn't mind paying someone to do but if I want it done right I feel like I just have to do it myself.
I understand you have shoulder issues so not knocking you personally or anything just sucks to seem so hard to find good reputable places to work on things.

Just gotta say - this is the damn truth. I actually have someone I trust for renovations and for my mechanics stuff when I have more money than time. The last tile job I had in our master shower has had the grout crack out twice now, and one of the perpendicular joints consistently leaks due to a grout line where the curb meets the wall. Then, my trusted mechanic installed a 100A alt when my truck is supposed to get 130A, and I told him it took the higher amperage unit. Then I found everything wasn't buttoned up - they ripped out and left out the passenger fender well splash guard and didn't bother to reattach the harness bracket to the alt housing.

I hate being in this position of not being able to trust others to do my shit, but when I can look at something, knowing I'm not the professional, and SEE problems, understand why the problem exists, that really, really sucks.

Finding a trusted mechanic can sometimes be a difficult and frustrating time going through a cycle of bad ones to find the one good one. Ideally you'd want it to be a shop owner who's competent since he relies on your good word of mouth to gain business. In many ways this can be paralleled to dating with this one being the Medusa of mechanics. :eek2::D

I agree! I’ve had a few bad experiences with mechanics, luckily nothing major but still unacceptable. Last time I went to a mechanic I told them I’m gonna watch y’all work on it because I want to make sure the job gets done right, owner didn’t like that but who cares! It’s my truck, (job was done right). Not long ago I got new tires at discount tire and they broke one of my center caps. They tried to tell me they were already broken but little did they know I was there watching how they were pulling on them, I told them they need to get me a new one and they did. Another one was at an alignment shop, completely messed my alignment up, went back and told him give me my money back or fix it! Dude fixed it right up and drove as straight as an arrow after. And yes I do my research to find the best mechanic but they can still screw you up. My advise is go back there and tell them they messed your truck, they need to fix it and you shouldn’t have to pay, watch if you can, don’t just assume that they’re going to do the job right, always take pictures/videos before you take your truck to a mechanic because you might come out with an issue that wasn’t there before you took it in. I love my Tundra and I don’t let nobody do my truck wrong and you shouldn’t either!
