Random stall, restarted and drove fine after

Ok so I absolutely love my first Tundra, however something strange happened today. I was pulling into a driveway that was up hill and the vehicle stalled out. I forgot to get a picture of what the message said on dash. I put it in park and restarted it and no warning lights came on and it drove fine after that. Any thoughts? I am going to take it in for the profile linking issue and thought adding this event.

toyota said there was only one other truck with it, I call BS on that!!

 

Lowish on fuel and it sucks air as remaining fuel sloshed around during those few seconds of 'bumpiness' between road and driveway, maybe?

 

no way, if thats it then toyota has super big problems on their hands

its some-type of electric gremlin I bet

 

first production vehicles can have all type of problems, no matter what brand.

have dealer look at stored code or something, hope it's not something major.

 

It had a half tank so definitely not fuel issue.

 

unless the fuel gauge was off?

thats also an issue with the new trucks.

 

My Tundra stalled while I was driving on Sunday. Had it in the shop but they could not find out why the engine shut down. Toyota engineers were all on it. They were able to see the event. They said that my Truck was the second one in the nation that had the same issue. The first one that had the event has not had a repeated event since. Sounds like a third one.
I was the second one that posted the other day.

 

Sounds worse than the failing power steering racks of 21. The engine shuts down and you lose power steering and power brakes too!

 

Not much info to go off of. I'd try to get the issue to repeat if safe to do so. Is it related to an incline or is that coincidental? Was there a brake application? Was this with auto start stop enabled?

 

Oddly enough, I had the same thing happen under the EXACT same conditions. Pulling up my Driveway which is at a pitch (see pic)...waited for garage door open...., looked down and engine had shutdown. got pics of the cluster after event-attached. haven't brought it in. second time this happened

Production issues happen in every damn year. I chalk it up comments like that to jealousy or just an unhappy life that leads people to needing to spread their misery.

 

Do I understand correctly that the new '22 Tundras have stock-from-the-factory (no exceptions) the stop-start feature? Where when the truck stops if the brake pedal is pushed hard/far enough the "stop" of stop-start initiates?

Nope. No Holiday Inn Express last night.

 

No the display would have been different and showed a timer of seconds of the engine being stopped, etc. and lifting the foot in any capacity would have restarted the engine. Never are there warning of other systems being impacted during the auto stop.

 

Need to see if same issue happens with auto start stop disabled.

 

Definitely not jealous and very happy in life. I told the op that I hope everything works out for him. We’re all Tundra brothers here. Sorry if my comment upset you

 

Did you happen to have the car in drive abs open the door by any chance?

 

No, but I’ve encountered a situation where engine running/ in drive and opening the door throws the e brake on. Another safety “feature”.

Unrelated: There is a button you can switch off the auto start/stop feature, but that wasn’t what was happening here.

 

Yeah that’s what I was referring to. Happened to me in a drive thru day 1 when my freshly tinted windows could not be rolled down. It basically shut the car off.

 

I will try that (in drive and open door) again next time I head out to verify behavior.

 

Exactly what happened to me but I was actually driving. I was coming off the interstate and the off ramp was at an incline. After they looked at it, finding nothing, it’s been fine since.

 

It’s weird that it happens on an incline. That would indicate something with the fuel system wouldn’t it. Maybe a bad check valve or back flow preventer? Imagine this happening while off roading on a steep incline or towing on an steep incline.

Hi all,

New member as of today. I wanted to chime in on this one. I have 2800KM on my truck now. This stalling issue has happened three times so far. 2 in the last couple days, the first time a couple maybe three weeks ago. All three times has been at a stop at idle in drive with foot on the brake but without the engine cutoff engaged and it always seems to happen just as I start to accelerate after lifting my foot off the brake pedal. First time I was at a mall looking to turn left took my foot of the brake and applied some gas then no power and engine stalled, display just read engine stopped pull to a safe place. 2nd and third times both at a stop and in these cases proceeding to turn right and it seems just as I lift my foot from the brake and apply gas it just quits. Last time I was nearly rear ended!!! In all cases I did not apply further brake pedal pressure so the engine was not already shut off. This is to me surely a bug and electrical related to me. It does not run out of fuel all cases have been with over 3/4 of a tank of fuel. It restarts instantly once in park. I am at a loss, and it is a safety concern for sure. I have had the dealer check the first one, with a no problem found reply. It has not done it at speed or on the highway yet or in major traffic and I certainly hope it does not do turning against traffic. I am opening a case with my dealer to get it on record so if I am in an accident because of this there is some kind of documentation. Cheers, I just wanted to add my experiences. I am in Ottawa Canada noted just in case they call it a temp related issue.

 

Way too much tech in these new Tundras. The very reason I love my 19 and Tundras in general. I guess it's a good thing I'm getting up in years, Just have to make sure mine lasts me another 20 yrs lol. Hope you guys get these gremlins figured out.

 

This seems coincidentally related to the "near stall" issue with auto stop that some have mentioned here. I was on an incline yesterday, and for a quick second got no throttle response. Thought maybe it stalled, but it had not, then spun the wheels because I had already applied more throttle to compensate. Hoping the software update smooths this out.
