What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

I've been daily driving my 05 for the last 6 years that I've had it. But I just bought a 2017 Camry XLE with 16,350 miles on it for a backup vehicle so I can transport my 2 daughters and their dance costumes and stuff to and from competitions, get groceries and zoom around town in.

I still drive my truck 2-3 days a week, but it's the car's time to do the heavy lifting for awhile

 

once the tacomas are all road worthy i'll have 5 trucks to chose from... oof i have issues

 

My truck will be my daily in retirement. Until then just a weekend truck and a trip or two to N Ga (~320 miles round trip) every few months.
I didn't know until today that meant I didn't have a real truck.....

 

My Tundra is my "beater", albeit a very nice low mileage one in good condition that's used for camping duties and truck things. It doesn't get much use and that keeps the mileage low. Personally I'd much rather have a nice daily driver and the Land Cruiser does that exceptionally well. Both get terrible MPGs though lol.

 

The gas pump says "Squeeeeeee" no more. What a fun winter time job.

I think it’s even easier to pull the whole seat than just the bottoms. Fold the bottoms up and remove the 4 bolts (12 or 14mm socket) securing the bottom, then just lift the whole seat straight up about 2” and it’s free. Much easier with 2 people but I’ve done it alone several times.

I just wish I would have known sooner!! Joking aside, I did drive it to work today!

 

On the upside though, there's one task you won't be doing again for another 150-200k miles or 15-20 years if you replaced w/OEM....

OEM filter, pump, and tank gasket. I even replaced all of the hose clips and clamps.

 

Got the side door moldings painted up, think it looks much better than the black with the grey stripe in the middle. One day I'll hopefully get rid of them completely but this works for now!

 

Or longer. I've never replaced mine. 22 years and 265k on the clock. and counting....

 

Takes about 10 minutes, less once you get the hang of it. The plastic trim near the release lever is a little fiddly but other than that you pull a bolt and wiggle the bottoms out. It frees up a good amount of space.

 

And all this talk about having a daily beater, it helps a lot on saving money. Gas, tires, oil changes, even car washes are more expensive on a truck. Gas alone doesn't make it worth the cost of a 2nd vehicle, and I don't know that a full CBA would agree with a 2nd vehicle, but every time my little hatch is driven I'm happy. I like to drive my truck when I need my truck, and jam around in my hatch when I don't.

 

Yes but when trying to justify the expensive of a 2nd vehicle I've seen people get really generous with the math in trying to say how fast they will break-even on gas. I wouldn't buy a 2nd car to save money. I would do it just for fun or to have something else to put miles on. It really takes years to break even.

 

We have a mix here of towns with garbage service and those without. The people in the wealthier towns tend to throw out good stuff for minor issues I've found.

The ones who have to haul their items to the dump sometime have sections where they pull aside the decent items that could be fixed/cleaned up and sell them at a reduced price.

 

I know a lot of people that have an old beater pickup as a 2nd vehicle where they just use it to plow their driveway and nothing else. Generally it's unregistered so they don't have to pay insurance. Some register it so they can take their weekend trip to Home Depot or Lowes.

 

Agreed. My sister gave me her old beater corolla and it saves me $119.83/month in gas. Insurance costs $47.45/month, registration is negligible. So let's say I save $70/month, but even though I got the car for free, I've put $2,000 in repairs (just parts). If I don't have to replace anything else, I'll break even in 28.5 months. And that's a pretty extreme example of a cheap commuter that gets 30mpg and I have a 50 mile roundtrip commute.

But I do love having a backup car for big truck projects that take a few days.

 

I wonder how much Empty Lord pays a month in insurace with his used car lot he maintains.

 

Not much going on in the middle of nowhere Missouri. Trucks haven’t moved in a few days, finally got em warmed up so we can clear the driveway.

 

Unless your second vehicle is a scooter or your truck gets under 10mpg and you drive a lot of miles, I don't think you can break even on gas. Its more like you save money on gas but spend it elsewhere.

 

Costs me $7 to fill the tank on my chopper. And that’s paying $5/gal. Truck is up to about $120 from empty.

 

Wear and tear items cost more on trucks. I was clocking close to 25k a year when I was daily driving the truck. This way I have more time in between shock rebuilds, new suspension components, wheel bearings, seals, etc. Costs close to nothing to keep my car running and it’s more fun to drive in traffic. Plus, when I hit the brakes on the matrix, it actually wants to stop.

 

I go days without moving my truck

And weeks without even seeing my Tundra.

Sometimes I make up some dumb excuse just to drive somewhere.

 

My truck has been on a battery tender for almost 3 weeks now. Got more welding gas so hopefully I’ll get to move it 15’ soon!
