I remember I suggested people proactively replace their spare if it was original and I actually had a few people respond and poo poo my idea. A 15-20 year old tire is not safe to drive on.

 

How would you propose to get the stud out after you smack it in? Backing plate is 360° around the base of the drum. Even with the drum off it was a bitch to get the half-studs out.

Yup. I don't think I gave you hell. If your spare hasn't been dropped in 6-8 years, I'd be leery of using it. I was sweating bullets riding home on this and it was less than 2 miles of surface streets.

 

If you squint real hard and turn down the lights, you might not see the dry rot.

If you're just going back with stock size tires just take the best one that's left and put it on there. Or is the spare wheel only a 16?
When I bought my truck it had the original TRD package BFG Rugged Trail on the front right. From the wear on it I figure it was on there for at least 3-5k miles with a shitty alignment. Somehow it didn't explode but I didn't drive over 60 with it and only had it on for about 100 miles myself.

Vise grips and run the nut down is what I was thinking.

 

Usually Toyota leaves just enough room in one spot to knock the old out and snake the new one back in. Just have to rotate the axle to find it.

Also, get a Lisle stud install tool (or borrow one if anyone you know has one).

I work with a bunch of senior citizens and they're all shitting their pants (mostly figuratively) about the ice-and-snow-pocalypse that's on the schedule for later today.

I'm over here making fun of all of them for living through 100 winters and still being afraid of snow.

 

I would hate to have to drive on ice though. Doesn't sound fun like snow.

 

It's not the most fun.
But it's manageable. Just have to have a plan and go slow.
Also, stay off the interstates. They're always a bloodbath.

Nah, was more about spraying it down to remove the filth off it so I could see how bad it actually was, I had to run some errands today, and I really didn't feel like doing the work yesterday.

That's great for install. The issue is, How do you get the old broke ass lug out once you tap it in? The drum's backing plate has no opening in the rear. The drum itself has no opening. Even as it was, with the drum off, the second I tapped each lug out, they fell and got stuck behind the shoes, tangled up in the springs, was a pain in the ass to fish them out.

Yeah, nope. No such thing exists on my rear drums, nothing that would've remotely helped at least.

Didn't have one, sadly. It wasn't anything a socket with its drive-side to the drum wouldn't pull in using a lug nut. We're golden now.

Also, we're 13 hours into the Groundhog's Day snowpocalypse of 2022 and there's just been steady rain and temps in the mid 30s to 40.

You would think differently if you've ever seen cars racing each other on ice via studded tires. A guy I know at work has a souped up 89 325i BMW that he races every year with studded tires. It's pretty cool to watch.

 

I was just discussing this with my coworker. Fear sells. Drives me crazy that they now name every winter storm. "Winter Storm Landon"

Still raining.
No ice.
No snow.
No wind.
Still have panic.
The DOT is salting in the rain. They apparently don't know what happens to salt when you pour it in water.

 

Must be a long range plan…as soon as all that moisture evaporates you will be left with salt, just be patient.
