Non JBL system 2016 Limited here. Looking for some advice.
My dash speakers are shot so I decided it was time to just replace them all at once and maybe add a little power. I went to BB and he recommended JBL GX series 6x9 3 ways in the front door and the 6.5 2 ways in the rear doors. I told him I didnt have a powered system (recently discovered otherwise) so he said they could disconnect the 3 dash speakers and rear tweeters. Add an Alpine 4 way amp to power to the 4 doors and call it a night. He said it would be a big improvement over stock.
Since I just found out my head unit powers the front dash speakers, would it be a good idea to just upgrade those and keep them connected running off the head unit and add new separate power to the 4 doors?

nope, just ditch the dash speakers.

Are they component speakers or coax?
I would recommend components in the fronts at a minimum. Put the tweeters in the sail panels.

The ones they offered to install are coaxial front and rear. If I go components don’t I need a sub somewhere? I was hoping not to add one

Nope. You dont unless you want one.
2-way components can be power by your alpine amp front channels. The rear coaxial will also be power by the same amp on the rear channel.

components will come with passive crossover. It takes the signal coming from your radio to the amp then to the crossover and the crossover split the highs and lows for you. The highs will go to your tweeter mounted in the sail panel. The lows will go to your woofer in the bottom of the door.

TRD Air Filters, Front door windows tinted to match the rears. Wheel locks, Talons Garage cat shield, Tyger Automotive soft tonneau cover, WeatherTech floor mats with Tuff Skinz Custom Emblem kit, Toyota OEM Emblem Black Out kit. AVS vent covers on all four doors, Red Tundra letters on front bumper & TRD highlighted in Red on front grille. Tailgate Tundra Letters in Black.
I did the BB conversion as well but I changed all my door speakers to Alpine and Alpine component speakers in the front 1” tweeters in the dash and 6.5” in the doors. All run through the Alpine amp and kept the stock head unit. In addition I did a 10” sub box by Pioneer with a Pioneer amp under the rear drivers side seat. It thumps!! Way better than stock.

Whats the better BB speaker to go with. I dont mind paying more for good speakers and I may add a powered sub like you have one day, but for now just the four 6.5" components. I see Alpine, JBL and Kicker are the main brands they carry?
I would rather just go through Taco Tunes or Randy but I have a total tech membership with BB and a shit ton of gift cards to burn.

They recommended the JBL components in front and coaxial in back due to the 2ohm vs Alpine 4ohm

Y are they pushing jbl? You have plenty of options to choose from beside jbl. Alpine is 4 ohm. But you should check to see if it will also run at 2 ohms and put out slightly more power at 2 ohms.

Something to keep in mind, at least with the OEM amp I had in my truck, is that the signal is filtered for the door woofers. You need to bypass the amp if you want full range from the door connectors. Dash speakers and rear door tweeters are all run direct from the HU.

I did notice that and will be adding separate 4 channel power with an Alpine Amp, if I’m not mistaken they will be deleting all the tweeters in dash and installing new component tweeters in the sails. I’ll just be going with rear 6.5 coaxial and deleting the door tweeters

I do have a question concerning the power. Instead of using a 4 channel Alpine Amp why couldn’t I just use the 45x4 power bank from Alpine. Price is about the same?

I asked the installer what he recommended Alpine S series or JBL GX series and he said the JBL is a little more but was a better product unless I moved up to the Alpine R series which were more than twice as much.

You need a 5-channel amp for the sub you are going to want.
Amping the door speakers isn't going to cut it for bass..
You may think 4 channels is good for now, but in 1,6,12 months you're gonna want a sub.

You are already looking into better audio, 4 channels and door speakers ain't gonna hack it.
    Been there, done that.

Might as well make that easier now, than to later have to buy a 5 channel or mono sub amp (and run another line to the battery) for the sub and enclosure you're going to want/buy.

BTW I would not let the Best Buy geeks touch my truck, moreless anything else I own.

    Good luck..

I hear you there and you may be right but I’ve had the truck for 5 years with a bad stock non JBL system no sub and was fine with it. I’m just upgrading the speakers because they are cracking and all going bad. That’s why i decided to just go with a better power source than the stock one. I may just get the Alpine power bank since I’m not getting a sub.
As far as BB goes I’m a TT member and have spent quite a bit on my home AV needs and they have been great. Very knowledgeable and all my installations are free. Hopefully the car audio will be just as good
