Rear diff locker: Do they make an E Locker for Tundras?

Looking at the G2's and the Nitro's for the 4:88 re-gear. Wanting to go ahead and do a rear Locker. LSD will be a "wear" item and only hold up for 20 to 30K miles so they are out.

Not too fond of the ARB or any other AIR type lockers due to air system freeze and other air system failures. Wondering if anyone has found an E (electric) Locker out there?

 

Yeah, the 10.5" rear axle only has the ARB and an Auburn LSD as aftermarket options. I've wheeled in plenty of cold areas with my compressor mounted in the frame rail (with the suction up in the engine bay near the other breather tubes) and haven't had any problems. As long as a good mechanic installs it there shouldn't be any leaks or problems. It's a much more robust differential than the Toyota designed differential case.

 

Sweet! Thanks for the info. I went ahead and pulled the trigger on the Nitro's and got the Auburn Pro LSD. Im not going to be hard core off road and figured for snowy roads up through Canada and in Alaska a full locking diff was not going to work on regular highway and daily driving.

Hope that the clutch plates don't wear out too soon on that Auburn. Found some gouge where they are going more than than the 20 to 30K so I will be one of the Ginny Pigs. Will see how good the Trac Control works combined with this.

 

Whats the deal on the Auburns? Are they lasting if not abused?

I really do not know. I didn't look into it much since I needed a locker for my purposes. My Google search didn't bring up too many reviews. But if no one is complaining they can't be too bad?

 

Good observation, no complainers is a good thing.

Like I said there are a lot of SC guys running them and so is Nitro in their promotional Super Charged Tundra. Found a bunch more serious mud guys running the Auburn LSD too. Might have stumbled onto something here that just might be a good way to go for us less hard core guys where we get the best of both worlds.

Will call www.justdifferentials.com where I ordered my stuff and pick their brains on how well these hold up on Monday and ask if those clutch pads are replaceable if they were out.

The low milage info was from $$$$ 4 WHEEL PARTS $$$$

UP SELLING ARB LOCKERS and pushing the G2's which are NOT a complete kit. Additionally, The Nitro's use OEM Toyota parts, the G2's do not.

Nitro's were even a few bucks cheaper with no sales tax and free shipping.

Went to 2 of their shops today (4WP) here in DFW area and got the same response, LSD SUCKS and I needed their G2's and the ARB locker.

Pays to shop for sure.

Will look for a local mom and pop shop for the install vs them. They will probably bitch anyway about installing the gears and LSD that they don't offer or sold me anyway.

 

I have my 4.88s and auburn rear LSD being installed in less than two weeks. When I spoke with Auburn gear customer service department they suggested the following specs for the rear diff.

Auburn rear differential
High performance differential limited slip
10 1/2 12bolt
Part number:

36 spline axial
Non synthetic oil
80-90 Weight oil with additive

 

What gears did to go with? I got the exact same Auburn unit.

 

Auburn technical support said that only if you intend to off-road do you need a full locker. Plus they also said with a front independent suspension they don't suggest running a front locker. Unless you intend to drive straight with a front locker ingaged. The LSD differential on the other hand they said would help power transfer to both rear tires equally versus power to just one rear tire. That's why I chose to go with the Auburn LSD.

Here is all the parts list from 4wheel parts for my gear swap and LSD.

 

I got the same list except for the LSD. Labor for gears only was $935.00

Loos like there is nothing to installing the LSD while they have it all part. Im curious what they are charging you for installing it all.

 

4wheel parts is a huge national chain so each store will vary. The 4 wheel parts store in San Antonio does the majority of Toyota Tundra lifts and modifications in S.A. Plus they have done over four different trucks and have stood behind their work. That's my own personal experience. Plus most of the guys at my local 4wheel parts have been there for over 10 years and are very knowledgeable.

 

Right guys that really know what the f they are doing is everything.

 

I'm at $940 for labor on gears and LSD but my buddy is the manager. The cost to do the LSD shouldn't be that much more since they already have the rear diff disassembled for the gear swap. If you do the LSD at a later date it should be $400 or more for labor.

 

Right at the same dollar amount to do it all at the same time. Im wondering if they will have an issue with installing the Nitro gears vs the G2's. The kit is 100% complete and has all OEM Toyota parts. Will wait to get my parts here and then give them a call to take their temperature.

 

Been running the Auburn for 2 years now. with 4.88s. Purchased and Built by Just Differentials, i installed the diff. Simple. Have an ARB up front as well.
You'll love the improvements felt from the Auburn. Can break both tires and have a nice power slide with the nannies turned off, also see a much lower incidence of the nannies kicking in on slippery roads withe the traction improvements. Will certainly help you up n over obstacles that you will spin a wheel on now.

Excellent. You must be bashing some serious off road needing the front ARB.

 

I thought lsd was a bad thing on snowy or slippery roads. The selling point of on demand lockers like the arb is you're only locked when you want to be.

This is an example of "moderate use of throttle" in REVERSE. Substitute snow for the sand. The LSD along with the gears is going to be the shit!

Just make sure you take it easy so your gears can break in and mesh for the first 500-1000 miles.

And i do spend a lot of time in the Cali deserts and Baja cruising around. Plenty of rocky washouts and deep sand that would be a serious issue if you were to get stuck and stranded. The ARB, like my winch, are for those times. When you need to get thru. A front locker is not something you run while "wheeling", it is used to get you thru a section of tough.

As far as a LSD in slippery. It actually is the one type of traction device that makes a huge difference (improvement). A locker wants to push or pull one tire thru the slide, causing it to break free or slip. The LSD, on the other hand, detects slippage or spin in one wheel, and then transfers power to the wheel with traction.
