    Having some more fun with automations & shortcuts for Apple CarPlay.

    I’ve got a Pioneer 7600. It’s got wireless CarPlay. It works well and it’s really convenient. However it can drain your phone battery a little faster, especially if you’re using navigation. For me short trips are usually fine, but if I’m going to be in the truck for a while, charging in my vehicle is probably a good idea.

    So as a reminder to charge, I wrote a shortcut that tells me audibly what my battery charge is like and advises me to plug in my iPhone.

    So far it works.

    For this you need Shortcuts (pre-installed on your iPhone) and Toolbox Pro from the App Store.

    The shortcut does the following:

    • Gets my battery level
    • Formats the level to 0 decimal places
    • Checks the battery status (using Get Battery Status from Toolbox Pro)
      • If the answer to is the battery unplugged? Is Yes, then the program ends
      • If the answer to Is the battery unplugged is No, then;
    • It checks the Get Device Motion (from Toolbox Pro. (This is a premium feature I think)
      • Its checking to see if the device is Driving, Cycling, Walking or Stationary.
    • In Summary:
      • If the Shortcut determines that the iPhone is unplugged and Driving, it will return and read text that advises me of my battery status, charging status and a reminder to plug it in. I will not get a message if my iPhone is plugged in, or if I’m not driving.
      • The shortcut is triggered in Automations using the Battery Level command. I’ve got 3 automations set up for this. When my battery falls below 70%; or when my battery falls below 50% and when my battery falls below 30%. Right now I get the same message for any of those triggers. But, I could create, change or delete triggers. I could also duplicate the shortcut and create new one’s with more aggressive language for when my battery gets really low.

    If you’ve got other shortcuts or automations that you like post ‘em up!!
