My better half took the truck (2020 pro) out for some errands today, amd for some reason took the unpaved road home...which was still covered in snow, ice, and slush.

I havent yet explained how to shift into 4hi, etc...

Any how, low and behold she got a little stuck in 2wd. She went 4 hi, and made progress, but started sliding in a ditch, so once she stopped moving, she went to 4 lo, but wasnt in neutral. She said the 4 lo light was flashing, no strange sounds happened. She made progress in movement so went 4 hi until she hit the paved section of road and went 2 hi.

So my question..how bad is it to go 4hi to 4 lo without being in neutral? I have yet to even go in 4 lo, so not positive if that light is supposed to flash or not...

The truck seems to be fine, and more importantly, she got home safely.

It didn’t go to 4 low. The light flashing indicates an attempted shift. It goes solid when it shifts. She must not have mentioned the truck started screaming (beeping) at her when she attempted to shift to 4 low while not in N.

I don't think that the ECU will not allow a shift from 4hi to 4lo (nor back) without being in neutral. The light will flash and there will be an audible beeping (she may've just not noticed). I'm sure that your truck is fine.

First and foremost I am glad she made it home safely. Lets face it, yes it would suck to damage the truck but it is replaceable.

Leave it to me (I am Mr. RTFM old habit taught by my dad), park is ideal for the changing from 2 to 4H to 4L. If she did not hear the beeping it is not likely she made it to 4L.

I agree that it is not likely she did any damage.

Unnecessarily takes the snow covered unpaved road home… she’s a keeper.

nothing to add here...the system locks you out from going from 4hi to 4 lo without the vehicle speed and shift position feedback being correct.

This is because the transfer case shift into 4 lo is unsynchronized.

You have to be moving slightly to shift into 4Hi.

4hi in park won’t do anything. You have to be moving. I shift in and out of 4hi all the time when the roads are snowy and shitty.
