I purchased a 2012 Tundra that was originally equipped with the auto adjusting headlights and the owner has replaced one that isn't automatic. I have an automatic replacement for that headlight but wonder what the procedure is to get them pointing in the same direction after installation. Does anyone know out there?

Have you tried installing the replacement and seeing if it just works from the get-go?

Turn you dial to 0 for the current headlight. Install the other light and it should go to that setting. Its easier to do it when its dark so that you can see where the beam pattern is.

I just want to do it once and be done. Do you guys know this as truth, or is it (wait for it) just a shot in the dark? thanks

In order to do it one and be done, I would do the following.

-Install headlight with working leveling motor

-Find a parking garage, warehouse, or really anywhere with level ground and flat wall, where you can park ~20ft away with your empty truck.

-Roll aiming switch to the highest setting (headlights pointing the highest)

-Get screwdriver, pop hood and properly aim both of your headlights.

Now when you load up your truck or pull a trailer, you can adjust for whatever squat that particular haul is enducing.

Nobody on the forum would have any idea how your current headlights are aimed in relation to the replacement you procured. So nobody can provide you with the guarantee you aparently desire.

    Hope this helps

Thanks, I thought there might be a way to syncronize the motors so that when applying power, one doesn't go up and the other down or similar nonsense. I'm not looking for a guarantee, just someone who has had experience doing this swap. Maybe I can figure out what direction the motor takes to raise the bulb and set it at its highest point before installing.

My smart a$$ remark was a double entendre: "a shot in the dark" had to do with aiming the headlights as well as potentially guessing what needed to be done. Sorry if my tepid sense of humor offended anyone.

I think Toyota and all the headlight manufacturers (with adjustment motors) just assume the aim will be close enough?

Every time I have installed a new headlight, a proper aim has been necessary.

If you have extra time, you could plug in the headlights individually to get a baseline, then adjust the current headlight (with the dial) to suit the replacement headlight while it is unplugged.

Either way, it sounds like you will be playing with manual adjuster AND auto adjust

...if you'd like a shot in the dark, I bet the headlights are intended to be in the highest position just for everyday use, and toyota would maybe build the housings ready to install in the highest setting??
