Turbo issue

Lots of people share that mindset. They own a domestic truck.

Once you remove stellar reliability from the consideration, I think certain domestic trucks are better than the Tundra. Be it payload, power, recovery hooks (jk).

Trucks are more expensive than ever. We're looking at mid 50s and up for a Tundra. I'd be pissed if I had to pay 5k for a repair.
It's not just "understandable because I got my money out of it" but the bigger issue to me is that I've never seen such a repair expense in my 29 years of vehicle ownership, and once you drop 5k on an out-of-warranty Tundra, I'd feel "married" to it, conflicted because it'd be financially dumb to sell it after such an outlay, and probably impossible to sell if you don't fix it.

 

On the contrary. I don’t expect to have a $5,000 repair on my “old school” V8 for at least 300,000 miles. I will be livid if it needs that kind of money as early as 150,000 miles. Hardly a throw it away mentality.

 

This is a key difference between the roll out of the 2nd gen in 2007 vs the rollout of this 3rd gen. In 2007 the tundra was the truck to beat as it rolled onto the scene. It had the most power and capability of all half tons hands down. The legendary reliability came to be something that it developed over time, it wasn’t why you would purchase one in 2007. Now fast forward to the 3rd gen and the tundra arrives, and it is not beating the competition in any particular metric. It’s just competitive at this point. Despite us waiting 14 years for it, while being told it was a “world beater”. Now it can hang it’s hat on neither being the most capable nor the most reliable truck, since the reliable reputation building takes time. I don’t doubt it will eventually be considered among the most reliable options, but right now we have no reason to say it is.

Indeed. I still DIY almost everything even on my modern vehicles and never buy extended warranties. But this sort of thing... pulling the motor or lifting the cab... would be way beyond what I could do at home. Might have to add in the cost of a long term service plan/warranty if I get a Tundra. Hard to believe they engineered it this way. I wonder if there are any dealers who sell these online at a discount. There are some Chevy dealers that sell the official GMEPP plans online for Corvettes and they cost way less than anything you can typically get at purchase from the usual stealership.

 

If the new Tundra is going to require an extended warranty to realistically own past the normal factory warranty, then we might as well buy a different brand of truck. Especially for what Toyota wants to charge for this new truck.

 

This would be a wallet busting repair for sure. But then again it may be that if it is fine though the end of the powertrain warranty it may well be good to go for another 10 years. Time will tell.

 

I got 2 2021 Tundras 1 limited and 1 Pro...both have recalls and as of present no recourse or solution in sight...I need at least one reliable vehicle to get me into some back country and home again...without have
to contact AAA from an area with no cell coverage...yoiks...

 

What were the recalls? The only ones I ever had on my Tacoma were to shave a little off the gas pedal and to check a seat belt mount bolt. No big deal at all.

Let's talk about truck bodies off for repairs. This is pretty common on ford trucks. My F250 had the body off 3 times. It took about 2 hours for the mechanics to remove and get good access to the engine and transmission.

As far as turbos, they will go bad, most don't last pass 150,000 miles. $$$

My friend had a new 2500 ram, the turbo came apart after 3,000 mile and took out the engine. Got a new one engine installed and no problems after that.

If it were as simple as a "software flash" - then why the whole body off frame..?

I think we are waaaaaay past a simple flash .. and Big "T" isn't happy about it not one bit.

 

Disclaimer - I'm no "wrench," but having owned several Porsches I can factually tell you that taking an auto body off a frame for maintenance or repair isn't just common, they're engineered and designed that way as a best practice.

 

I think it would only take a decent tech about half an hour to lift the cab so it might be worth it depending how difficult it is to get to a component with the cab on.

 

My early take on all this is that Toyota will figure this out and that the turbos will be fine and last a pretty long time. Maybe not 300,000 miles like we are used to getting out of our Toyotas but still a good long time. Turbo technology isn't something new... IOW it's not rocket science. I especially like the way they have an electric pump to keep the turbos' oil circulating after shutdown when it is hot to keep the oil from cooking in the turbos. Bravo.

After seeing the engine naked, however, I am more concerned with general serviceability. I guess I'll need to see one IRL from under the hood and under the truck to see how much of the motor can be visualized and how much of that is accessible. Lots and lot of little hoses and such... I can imagine a scenario where you have a CEL, take it to the dealer and they say sir, you have a vacuum leak (or a failed sensor), and we need to pull the cab off your truck to diagnose and fix it. Estimate starts at $3000 depending on what we find.

The other thing... I hope that when they do this sort of work that requires pulling the cab or motor they use a NASA level checklist to make sure all the spaghetti of hoses is (1) connected to the correct places and (2) the hoses are routed VERY carefully so as not be in danger of getting burned by the hot side of the turbos or the exhaust pipe. And secured such that they not in danger of moving into any of the hot danger zones over time.

Maybe these aren't going to be issues when I see a real Tundra and get a chance to go over it... but from here I am not getting a warm fuzzy feeling.

 

I find it hard to believe that people do not look at the whole picture before bashing endless rants over this truck. In the middle of a global pandemic and chip shortage, Toyota is one of the only manufacturers that are able to produce vehicles at a higher volume and as well as accommodate a completely reconfigured design. Instead of applauding them and accepting the pain of owning the first year of a redesign, some people just keep posting any issue over and over again, as well as the stereotype of certain drivers. I do see that most comments come from certain individuals that sit online all day posting comments, another similarity is it's also people that don't own the truck they're complaining about. I have had several Subarus with turbos, went well over 200k miles with no issue, you just need to ensure routine maintenance is performed, they hold up fine. For those of you that actually own the truck and are unhappy, trade it in, they are selling above sticker and I'm sure yours well sell at a high price as well. For those that cannot drive their vehicle due to the issue they are experiencing, get a lawyer and have Toyota take it back (I did see a thread where this happened). For those of you that don't own one and feel its a total piece of crap, go purchase the vehicle you feel is best.

We are all free to buy whatever we want, life is too short to spend it complaining about a vehicle, especially if you don't own one.

 

I’ve owned turbocharged vehicles before as well, and they were trouble free but used waste gates that were not computer controlled. I don’t personally have a problem with a well made and well executed turbocharged engine in a car or truck. Unfortunately what we are observing so far is not promising.

 

I am sure there will be issues with every vehicle, but I do have faith it will be resolved. Every manufacturer is feeling the pain of the pandemic and the global chip shortage, it's almost impossible to get the required people onsite. This will cause delays in resolving issues as well. It is a very scary time.

We recently took delivery of an Audi SQ5 (turbo, btw) and have to wait ~six months to get the 2nd key FOB. Reason? Chip shortage.

So yes, be happy you're able to get a new (literally, bumper to bumper) vehicle; designed in Michigan and California who's engine is built in Alabama and who's assembly happens in Texas.

I forgot to be frightened. Got vaccinated, got COVID-19 despite being vaccinated, survived, moving on with my life.

 

I am glad it worked out for you. Many here have actually died and were vaccinated, most people are now getting "Boosters". The people with existing health issues did not fair well.

 

Well, I am old and grew up with cars that had zero computers and just points and condensers for ignition. I can't think of one instance of automotive function where computer control didn't make major improvements. And the electronics that many old schoolers like to gripe about are probably the most reliable thing in modern vehicles. That will turn out to be the case here, as well.
