It's been two great years with the Tundra, but I absolutely needed three rows for a growing family. So this week I traded it in for a Sequoia.

It wasn't an easy decision, but it was made easier given how similar both vehicles are.

Has anyone else here done this, traded in their Tundra for a Sequoia?

One concern I have is that it sounds like the enthusiast community for Sequoias is small compared to that for Tundras. I hope to keep learning from this community. Thanks!

Not exactly in your shoes, but we got to where we needed third row so we bought a Sequoia for a family car. I still have my Tundra though. I like driving the Sequoia, almost as much as my Tundra.

Love the black pro. I almost bought that color but went with a little easier to maintain color. I did the same swap from a tundra crewmax to a 2020 Sequoia Pro. Miss hauling lumber or throwing the bikes in the back but don’t regret it one bit. It rides so much better without the bed bounce. Pay attention to the hood latch plastic that mounts behind the grill. Mine broke and the TRD pro grill seems really flimsy. Warranty repair but don’t see it holding up long term.

We traded our 5th gen 4Runner for a 200 Land Cruiser. The LC community is smaller than the Tundra, but it’s decent sized because it’s a global community. A lot of people overseas with Cruisers, most mods are the same

I think the Sequoia enthusiast group is small because most don’t modify them.

    Congratulations on the Sequoia

My mid-term plan regarding our vehicles is to pay my Tundra off in the next year, keep it forever, and trade my wife's Yukon in on a 3rd gen TTv6 Sequoia when they come out. The pattern has been one year after the new Tundra (2000/2001 and 2007/2008), so it'll probably be 2023.

I think the Sequoia enthusiast community is small because most Toyota truck/SUV enthusiasts are off-roaders, and the Sequoia's independent rear suspension keeps people from building it out as a cheaper Land Cruiser alternative.

We're doing the same thing, keep the Tundra and trade the Highlander in on the new Sequoia... can't wait!

As far as modding the Sequoias, there are some out there that are pretty badass!
Its basically the same vehicle in a lot of ways, so you should be able to use a lot of Tundra stuff, maybe with a little creativity to make it work on the Sequoia. Maybe do the Sequndra mod...

My son's 07 Sequoia. Poor man's Land Cruiser, but still super capable and fun to drive.
Cool thing is most Gen 1 Tundra stuff works on it, so its cheap to upgrade.

You can really feel the change in vehicle handling with the independent rear suspension in the Sequoia.

I am not towing any more than 3000 lb so I think I'll be OK with this setup. It does ride very nice, although I'm not sure to what extent it's the IRS or also the fact that it feels heavier than the Tundra.

All understood. My goal with this rig is to build it into a long distance overlanding vehicle for family, for road trips to New England, Middle Atlantic and to Florida, lots of state parks, etc. No dangerous off-roading in the works for me.

I researched the Land Cruiser universe for many months. It's an incredible feat of durability engineering. But at the end of the day, if the third row is too small, then it can't handle 5-6 family members inside comfortably. As much as I respect the unique technology of the LC, I had to go with a Sequoia for interior space.

Duly noted - maybe there is a way to make it more durable, to strengthen that hood latch?

I would not have gotten the black except for the fact that it will always be garaged, and I'll take it only 1-2 days per week max, so I'll keep it very clean.

No doubt, the Sequoia is significantly bigger in every dimension compared to the Cruiser. The Cruiser isn’t all that much larger than the 5th gen 4Runner we traded in.

If Toyota had updated the Sequoia with 14+ Tundra styling there’s a possibility we would have got one. It came down to a Yukon Denali or the Cruiser for us, we decided on the Cruiser.

We were in your shoes. We absolutely love Toyota. My first truck was an 05 tundra my wife’s first car was a Camry. In 2018 we upgraded to our 2018 CM 4x4 sport and just this year we needed to upgrade to a larger vehicle with a third row. We test drove a lot of vehicles including the Sequoia but the wife didn’t want anything bulky to drive. She fell in love with the Sienna so we got that. Once we left the dealer I tinted it and swapped out the wheels and tires. When I’m home, I absolutely love driving the van. It’s fun.

The reason for this is math, Toyo sells 10X+ more tundras...every single year so that really adds up...

    Gorgeous rigs you guys!

Almost joined the club on Friday while taking in the wife's 4R Pro to get the clunking front shocks looked at. They had a Black 2020 Sequoia Pro that I tried hard to get the wife to basically trade straight across for her 4R.

She couldn't get over the interior styling compared to her 4R and my 2018 Platinum Tundra. Trust me, I tried hard to convince her, and even considered trading in my Tundra on it. But I just got TRD Pro shocks put on my Platinum the day before, and seriously love the truck.

A 3rd Gen Pro Sequoia is on my very short list of next vehicles.

I drive a '19 Tundra Limited and my wife recently traded her Highlander in for a '22 Sequoia Platinum. They feel very similar when driving. The Sequoia has better suspension for the road and carries more people, but it isn't a replacement for a truck because it doesn't have the bed for carrying stuff. The best thing about the '22 Sequoia is that it has the older style hood and I can see directly in front of me a lot better than I can in the Tundra.

Few months ago I transitioned from my 2017 Tundra SR5 to the 2021 TRD PRO due to family increase (4th due in a month). Happy with it, but definitely miss the truck once in a while. I've got 8k miles on her now.

I like the Sequoia if you need the room for the family , lifts are pretty easy compared to a LC 200 or LX570 , the Lexus does not have the KDSS which is the biggest limiting factor on lifting LC200’s … I currently have my 2020 LC 200 is a great over engineered vehicle and now way over priced !
Sequoia looks way better lifted , thats goes across the board .
I’m pretty active on all the Toyota sites , the Sequoia is the only one I don’t have currently , 4runner , tundra and a LC 200 right now .
My favorite everyone would think the LC 200 but I like the 4runner TRD pro better to be honest , has more basic controls , manual 4x4 controls .
