New from florida help me with remorse

Hello all, new here, had a 2003 Silverado z71 ext cab, it had 250k miles on it but I kept it up extremely well, he transmission was starting to go in it, every time the wind blew hard the roof sounded like it was going to collapse, i could never get the front end aligned, it was a great truck but those things drove me crazy, but it was paid for, so I went and got into a payment in this crazy market and bought a 2015 tundra 4x4 w 60k miles on it, the tundra is so very much nicer in every way shape and form, however I’m having buyers remorse for getting into a payment again, I put a lot of time and money into worn stuff on my Silverado, such as axles, hub assembly’s, water pump, brake system etc etc, is this tundra going to be a good truck? I’m a paw paw driver and religious on maintenance! And never off-road, with this economy I’m regretting getting the payment, and would love some if any reassurance

Sounds like you needed a new truck anyway and that is what it costs these daze.
Who has that kind of cash laying around that they are willing to let go of for a depreciating asset anyway ?

I'm more worried about resale and the stupid low MPG's than the payment.
I wonder if anyone would want it when it costs $150 to fill the tank down the line if I had to sell....

I took one for a ride this past weekend.... nice truck but couldn't coax more than 11.7 out of it on the computer.

Much as I hate my Tacoma, it felt good to get back in and see 19.8 on the screen...

 

I've seen 91 octane at $4.89 a gallon !

 

If reliability is your biggest concern the '07-21 tundra is the best half ton pickup you can buy from that era in my opinion. Also my opinion, GM made the best half ton pickup from '96-06.

If it's rust free it will last as long as you can afford to put gas in it.

 

About $3.29 here in NE FLA.... for now. (for 87)

Welcome to the forum and rest easy you’ve bought a good truck. No truck will be maintenance free or never need repairs, but my last Tundra (which I refuse to get rid of) was on its original everything at 265,000 miles. Engine, tranny, rear end, wheel bearings, AC, starter, alternator etc. no failures to speak of. Most have similar experiences, but some will have failures. Just rare compared to other brands it seems. My current truck, a 2019 that I also got back into a payment for, is better in most ways and more capable than the old one. I’ve really enjoyed it so far and am happy with my purchase. You can’t take it with you, might as well enjoy it.

My 08 has 160k on it. I have done nothing but oil changes...and gas.

I did rear wheel bearings because I do a lot of 5th wheel camper hauling.

I have no fear of taking this truck across country.

 

First of all, I want tires just like those on your truck! Those are amazing! Secondly, you might want to replace the serpentine belt, thermostat, coolant, air filter, brake pads, u joints, and plugs. Drain and fill the tranny a couple three times 50 miles between each, change the diff fluids, flush the brake fluid, flush the ps fluid, and grease the chassis for starters.

I would at least change the plugs. When I changed my 08 Tacoma plugs at 110k mi there was hardly any electrode left. Might want to take a look.

You should be able to keep this one long enough that the payments become a long lost memory well before you are done with it.
PS I also had a 2003 Silverado in the past, so I understand the experience and the transition.

BTW it was the transmission that did my '03 in as well (twice)

 

Welcome and congratulations on your new MGM Tundra! I can understand your anxiety about a monthly payment. I also hate buying items on time and when I do, I start sending extra payments to drive down the balance and close out the loan ASAP. One extra payment a year will significantly drive down the cost of the loan… just make sure the extra payment is applied to the principal. Looks like the truck has everything you need, is in great shape, etc. so in my mind it is worth the sacrifice. You have the last generation of the V8 Tundra’s and IMHO it’s the truck to have since I don’t think we will ever see that V8 again. I get about 16 mpg with mine on the highway so not too bad given the size of the truck. I have a 38 gallon tank in mine and I just fill it up at half a tank so I don’t get blown away (in my mind) with the high price of gas.

 

Great truck, best color. You will not regret it.

Pre 22 Tundra is the ONLY half ton worth owning.

 

1) Resale on a Toyota is peerless.
2) 250K on a Tundra is getting broken in.
3) research the million mile Tundras.
4) If you are competent with doing your own basic maintenance (inferring from your post that you are) then you've got no worries*.
5) In my years as a professional mechanic I've come to the well-founded conclusion that a paid-for Toyota is a major, major factor to getting ahead in life**. Get this Tundra paid off and you are set.
6) Financing right now isn't a huge deal as interest rates are probably going to get severely jacked in less than 12 months.
7) Newer trucks outside of Tundra are a bleepshow. Utter garbage. Gimmicky nonsense.


*Being new to a Tundra be aware the oil changes are more complicated. They use a canister style filter. One of the benefits is you have a much better look at the filter media for inspecting for early engine wear. The canister style filter housing is best worked with a designated filter tool you can buy even through Amazon. I bought mine through Matco but whatever...

I would also invest in a bluetooth scanner so you can easily adjust your transmission fluid level. A temp gun can get you by but the scanner is best.

**With zero variation or exception, Toyota customers at the shop I worked at for many years had basic repairs compared to everyone else. The ratio of the workorder costs was about 2-4x vs the Toyota customers. I never ever saw a Toyota customer distraught or in tears from repair costs. I'll never forget having to give a woman a $3600 repair bill for a head gasket and transmission overhaul on a just-out-of-warranty Chrysler minivan at the same time, in the same waiting room, as a lady with a 1st gen 4runner with 150k miles needed a radiator cap.

 

It seems to me that there are 2 questions here really.

1-Yes the Tundra are more reliable and will serve you well I am sure.

2-If you do not want a monthly payment then you probably should not have gotten one?

True; however, that doesn’t change the fact he now owns the truck and has payments.

Given the way prices are going on used vehicles (I heard an average of 37%) should he desire, in a few months he should be able to sell it and get his money back or make money should this craziness continue!

 

Use the money you’re saving by not having to spend it on repairs for the Chevy to overpay your loan and pay it off early.

 

No question there but nobody else can know his tolerance for having a payment compared to not having one so........

Im not trying to sound harsh here but if you dont want to have a payment for a truck then it is a simple thing really.

Sell it or change your mind.

 

Not sure if it’s an issue financially or that the OP is struggling with the fact he has a payment. If he made the purchase and is over his head, he should sell it and buy something more affordable. However, not the feeling I am getting from reading the OP’s first post. Might be he’s just looking for reassurance to the purchase he made. If so, he bought the right truck.

 

Assuming OP bought the Chevy lightly used, he still got 15+ years out of it. I imagine it's more sticker shock and just not liking the payment again after so many years without. 15 years between vehicles and having to buy in the current market...

OP should feel good, though. Tundra has a good reliability reputation, so 15+ years of service should be easily achievable with his new truck.

Here's an indicator of how much we like our Tundra;

I had 2010 Ram. Traded after 5 years with 30k miles on it.

Had 2015 Sierra. Traded after 2 years, had 9k miles on it.

Had 2017 Wrangler. Traded after 3 years, had 9k miles on it.

2020 Tundra. End of March will mark 2 years of ownership. Currently have 16k miles on it. NO plan or thoughts about trading it. Unlike the previous vehicles, I'm not bored nor annoyed with it yet. For me, that says a lot!

 

Agree which is also what I said in my first post.

 

Not struggling at all, it’s sticker shock paying 34k for a used truck, just hope it’ll hold up for years
