Dealer Swapping defective 21 for 22, would you do it?

Hey All.

I have a 21 TRD off road CM I bought a year ago. Been dealing with my dealer as my box and cab alignment is wonky. Crooked from the back. Higher driver side than passenger. Toyota last week told me they will fix it. But the fix involves 5-8 thousand in body and paint work. Essentially a total rebuild and paint of the back end. I hated this idea, as I don’t want all that work and to lose factory paint etc.

Local dealer trying to make it right is offering to buy back my 21 for what I paid and get me into a 22 for msrp. Payments close to the same. Would you do it?

 

I wouldn’t rule it out.

If they have a 2022 you can test drive and make an educated decision afterwards then take the opportunity.

 

Definitely test drive the 22 and consider it, you have nothing to lose.

 

I would be leery of an engine rebuild or other major mechanical work, but paint and body work probably wouldn’t bother me. The ‘22 has a lot of improvements over the ‘21, and you might really like it if you get a chance to test drive one. But the first year of a new generation carries its own set of headaches, even from Toyota as we’re seeing.

Some might think I’m crazy, but I’d probably stick with my ‘21 and just have the body and paint work done.

 

You could also consider this: have them do the work and then possibly sell your ‘21 for more than you paid for it last year…

Probably the best option because the 2.5 Gen trucks are hideously ugly.

 

What about length of time to get repairs done and what would you do for transportation until your new one arrives? I assume the new would be ordered in, so why not work the deal to drive what you have until the new arrives, test drive and confirm deal at that time. If you don't want the 22 they could sell and not loose anything.

 

If you can get the color and all the? options you need, same length of payments or did they add a year, I would go for it!
But only if "Does what you get make you as happy, if not more so, than what you had and now just lost did!"

I would not keep the 21! Take your chances on the 22, if you don’t like it sell it in six months to a year. Good Luck!

You just have to understand the risks. There is a chance that you will have some of the issues that are popping up (who knows what %) and be without your truck for a while. If you use your truck for a living, I would be concerned. If not, go for it!

I am curious what the dealer does if you swap it. I bet they either send your "misaligned" '21 to auction or sell it used hoping the next owner doesn't notice.

 

Take the deal, the CarFax generated from the repair will affect the '21s value. If you don't like the '22, trade it with the dealer for a '21 that comes in for a trade.

 

Curious why a handful of fender washers and body shims with a can of Duplicolor costs so much? I know inflation and all but.....

 

Swap it for another 21!

 

I'm a '2.5 gen fo life' kinda guy, but I'd take that deal quickly.

I would let them do the work and then go from there.....factory paint is kinda crap anyway so no love lost there. Just remember if the dealership is offering a deal like that without you asking...it is not a good deal. Let them take their lumps and spend the money on the repair, while they are fixing it decide if you want or like the 2022. Once they fix yours, find the best offer either trade or outright sell and get the 2022. A deal to sell you a truck MSRP to make a problem go away...is not a deal.

 

It’s off by about 1/4 to 1/2 inch (high) on the drivers side. So they can’t just shim, from the back looking at the window it’s leaning. Way worse and obvious if I try to add a tonneau cover. Passenger side is good.

they are saying the fix is full remove of bed, new body panels on driver side, break weld off plate between the bed and cab, new weld and then paint. No guarantee of a true fix when it’s done.

 

This is my exact concern.

 

Same trim. New one in Sr5 TRD off road doesn’t have everything my 21 has - like the moon roof. But basically matching the features and getting more with the 22.

same length of payments as I had on my 21. So it didn’t get longer, but does restart. It is almost a 7k difference in price from the 21s here to the 22.

 

Is the extra 7k worth the potential depreciation your ‘21 would likely get hit with after the big repair?

 

I imagine yes. Even though the Toyota Canada rep refused to say there would be any depreciation on the truck post repair when I pressed them. This is the whole reason why I reached back out to my local dealer for help and the solution they are offering

 

Yeah. Tried that. 10 months of that. Lol. They are happy to do the repair, or not. I have no other options (according to Toyota Canada) than that. And the dealer isn’t even the one I bought the truck from. They are just trying to help. The dealer I did buy from is more useless than Toyota Canada has been. I dropped them after the first month of owning trying to get an answer. They move a ton of metal, but that’s where the extent of their business model.

so the dealer making this deal, is helping fix a problem they didn’t create either.

 

I would seriously consider the trade. If you can test drive a 22 and like it, go for it. Unfortunately my stupid brain would never let me unsee the crookedness.
