Oil Filters

What is the purpose of the type of oil filters they are putting in these trucks. I just changed the oil in my wife's Lexus which has the same type oil filter and its a pain in the ass. What was wrong with the canister filter that you twist off put a little oil on the o ring of the new one and twist it back on? Is it just so there is less waste? Or why did they go with these filters.

 

Space I'm thinking.

 

I believe the cartridge styles are more environmentally friendly and cost effective for the manufacturers..sell at higher price but manufactured at lower cost.

Other than price what is the diff between standard toyota and the trd oil filter inserts?

 

Probably the TRD that is written on the package.
I don't know, I've always just bought Wix brand

 

I use OEM TRD for my Tundra and OEM for my wife's Lexus. It's actually nice that both our daily drivers use the same methods and oil for oil changes.

After replacing 4 Toyota/Lexus filters, I much prefer it over the twist on/off with the O ring. No matter what, with the other style you are going to spill oil everywhere when removing it, even if you try to hold it in a zip lock bag.

With the Toyota filter, you just take off the filter drain plug, then thread on a plug/nipple thing with a drain tube. All the oil drains out down the tube into whatever container you use for used oil. I also have a drain valve for the oil pan, so basically not a drop of oil touches the ground.

I just bought one of those to complete my 1st oil change, hopefully it works well. They should just design the filter area like my 4.0l Tacoma, easy as pie!
