Hey folks, got a 16 SR5 that is telling me I have a brake controller error. 4hi and 4lo flashing. Abs and traction control lights are on. Just drove the truck 2.5 hours with no issues other than the lights. When I shut it off and restart the lights and warnings go away but then come back on at 20mph. Using a prior post I noticed someone posted a pic with warning light codes and what they mean. According to it and what mine is doing, it says I have a transfer case shift failure. Anyone else had similar issues and what did you find out?

Do you have a CEL? Go to an auto parts store and ask them to read the code if you do. Otherwise you’ll be chasing an issue that might be wrongly diagnosed.

No, do not have a CEL. I’ve already tried to pull codes and there’s none logged in ecm or tcm

Search in upper right brake controller failure and or brake controller error and you will get lots of threads. Lots of discussions about that here.

I had issues with my factory unit as well, never gave me any lights or error codes, Never thought it actually worked anyway…. Swapped out to a Prodigy 3 and love it.. if you want my old one your welcome to it

Update: had the dealership diagnose the problem. Found metal in the rear end (failed wheel bearings). How difficult are they to replace? I am more than capable of the repair im just curious how much fun they are

According to them yes, because there was metal shavings on the wheel speed sensors so it pissed off the controller because it couldn’t read wheel speed.

do you know how and where did they actually found the "metal in the rear end"?

    Edit:
Ok, I see you mentioned metal shavings on the wheel speed sensor ... Not an expert here but I thought wheel bearings are sealed units.

Yea what they’re saying isn’t really adding up. I’m gonna pay them for diag and figure it out myself. The bearings appear to be sealed hub style so I’m a bit confused on what they’re telling me

Do you hear any sound or noise when driving? I have a car (not my truck) that has a bad wheel bearing and it makes some good noise.
With all that visible metal shaving in your car, I figured maybe you hear something.

I can’t when driving because the mud terrain tires on the truck howl driving down the road. I did hear them making noise when they had it on the lift though

That makes sense. I thought my Tire was bad since it was making a rumbling or roaring sound but I have a nice and quiet city tires and I can tell the difference.

btw, didn't mean to change the subject ...

your last question (post #6) was "how difficult are they to replace?"

I'm sure one of the experts will help.

If not, start another wheel bearing thread. There has been so many brake controller issues/threads that most people may ignore!

The bearings are pressed on to the axle, I’ve done them in the passed and you’ll need a shop press and a bearing plate to separate the bearing from the axle. I’d remove the axles and have a shop swap the bearings!!!

I have heard the bearings need a special tool to press them in. Never had the problem on my truck but another Tundra owner I know had the same problem. The shop did not have the tool and Toyota in town wouldn’t play nice so the shop fabricated their own part to make everything go back together.
