I'm running flood, which works great for lower speed visibility that I wanted around camp and stuff. I'm probably going to order a set of spot lenses to see if that projects a little better, though. And possibly switch to SSC2 with combos and moving the SSC1s to the back for chase lights.

I really despise the flood on my SS3s but I’m torn on spot or should I go combo……..
I’ve got the combo from DD on the 4runner and I like that pattern a lot better

The lenses are relatively cheap... get a set of combo and see how it goes?

White ones? Sweet thank you sir!
So I'll try to address these both at once. I know that the standard thought process is that lights mounted in the "ditch light" position are supposed to light the ditches, right? I disagree most of the time. Well if you take a peek at other things that I write I'll rarely refer to them as ditch lights, but rather "A-Pillar Lights" - Here's why:
    1. How people use their vehicle. Let's be honest, 90% of most people's driving is on the comfort of paved roads or relatively maintained dirt. A ditch light is only effective IMO if you have the lights canted out at least 45deg to actually project towards the ditches. The downside to that is that if you are doing anything but very slow travel that often won't help you at speed. By the time your ditch light has illuminated bambi you'll already be on top of it in an already unavoidable situation. That said, a light mounted high and illuminating to the sides can be very effective in guiding your path if you're moving slowly.
    2. Hood Splash and errant losses - A flood pattern light mounted anywhere above the hoodline (A-Pillar or roof mount) is going to pour a considerable amount of light onto the hood and up into the sky where it's unusable. Not only do you not gain any additional light immediately in front of the vehicle where "flood" light is most effective you have also added a bunch of additional light to your foreground limiting your eyes' ability to adjust to obstacles downrange.

Your Response - "OKAY SMART GUY WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO THEN"
My basic guidance is this. The higher on a vehicle a light is mounted the closer to a spot pattern it should generally be (refer to specific use case above for others).

If you have no additional lighting aside from OEM headlights - I usually recommend the combo pattern. I know that it contradicts what I said about flood pattern above the hoodline, BUT having just OEM headlights with these pods what you might find is that the driving or spot patterns by themselves might come off as a bit of a stark lighting contrast and you will feel like you need a little bit of mid-field or edge lighting to avoid a tunnel-vision effect. I prefer it, but I know many people don't like it. Also, on DD's combo lights the flood portion of the optic is actually a little bit of a tighter pattern than a full flood. One might call it "wide".

If you have light bars or something else low to handle the near/mid-field - I recommend driving pattern if going with Diode Dynamics; spot if you're going with Baja Designs or Rigid (not Hyperspot). The TIR optics in DD equipment focus the light much more than an open reflector design so there is very little light outside of the main pattern. The driving beam is still very tight and is a great driving light. The spot beam will be like 2 hole-punches in the night. Much too tight unless you have a bigger array of other lights.

@TRDFerguson Since you have the light bar I would recommend the driving beam. Aim them just to the edges of where the driving portion of the light bar falls off. They'll overlap with one another, but only slightly. You'll also benefit from the approach angle to the road since they're mounted higher.

@FrenchToasty without knowing the rest of your situation I would probably go combo.

Good info. I'll probably wait and get some SSC2s or SS3s for the ditch, er I mean A-pillar lights, and move my SSC1s to the back for some "FU"/chase lights then. They really do work nicely for side visibility as they are. And the 42" Stage combo is amazeballs for anything in front.

Thanks for the response, and I agree with you, I don’t have my “ditch” lights aimed 45 degrees out, they are more or less aimed just shy of the corner of my hood, for reasons you mentioned as well.
Right now I only have oem candle burners, aside from the DD SS3 pro amber floods

I had it in my head those were C2s when I wrote my response so that driving pattern talk is off the table. Spot would be the best thing if you wanted to point them out ahead, but with their small profile the body of the light output itself will just be small... Albeit powerful!
Since the SS3 Pros have a little softer cutoff up top I would be more apt to recommend the driving pattern then. But you already know what the combo pattern looks like so you can see for yourself how much "flood" you want up there! :)

Yep, those little guys pack a punch! I'm good with the down field light from the bar, so I'll wait and figure out what I want to do around the rest of the truck before I replace anything. SSC2s and an SP9100 could be a fun next project...
