I’m from AZ, and if it wasn’t for the chemical trails, spread by the jets overhead, or the radon injected into the soil by them, basements would be much more common

    Basements are cool.

I grew up with my bedroom in a shitty cellar/basement in Illinois… I can’t tell you how many times I hit my head on the asbestos-lined pipe outside of my bedroom door when I went to take a piss in the middle of the night. And the carbon monoxide from the boiler when snow covered the exhaust vent… this all explains the symptoms of brain damage I exhibit nowadays.

Don’t even own a TV any more and can’t remember the last movie I saw... I guess I watched Ford vs Ferrari on the plane to Kansas City in a November. If given the option between watching a movie and just about anything else, I usually end up doing the anything else. Not that I’ve got anything against it, but I usually just feel like I’d rather invest my mental energy into something else. Same reason I’ve never watched any of the Netflix/HBO/Showtime/Disney/whatever “TV” series. I actually think the last time I really got caught up in a TV series was Twin Peaks when it originally aired.

Yeah, that’s part of the problem. I’m incapable of watching something in the background or without fully taking it in and processing it, whether it’s a documentary on quantum physics or a corny low-brow comedy. I also read very slow because I process and retain it very deliberately. Goes with my username…

My wife is that way. She can have Netflix on in the background doing other stuff, or Youtube, or a podcast, or a book on tape, or something else. I can’t. Anything involving talking in the background and I can’t concentrate, and with books I have to read with my eyes to retain.

Thankfully, I CAN listen to music in the background, and find that it helps me focus. Just one of my many quirks I guess

My son seems to be a bit like you. Interesting, some of what you describe clicks when I think about how he is. Maybe only some similarities. He's very smart, I think has a partial photographic memory, doesn't watch a lot of movies, but the ones he does are specific, usually from the same directors. Is very into nuance, motivation, thought. He's very individualistic, if that means what I think it means.

Yeah - I grew up not really fitting in much. Not very “street smart” but book smart like a mofo and yes, borderline photographic memory - especially numbers. I could tear just about anything apart and deduce how it worked and how to put it back together (still do). Pop culture references often went right over my head, and I had (and still have) very few friends. Pretty introverted and quiet growing up (but if you get me started on something I know well or am passionate about, watch out), not much of a risk taker in the “entrepreneurial” sense, and have a dry and slightly dark sense of humor. I’m also able to explain complex ideas in layman’s terms once I’ve worked them out myself - something I attribute greatly to my success.

Not sure why I’m saying it, other than it’s cool to hear your son might be a little like that and it made me reflect a little on my childhood. I ended up in structural engineering and construction management. Engineering because I’m good at figuring out complex problems that require the abstract application of logic, and construction management because I’d go insane sitting in an office crunching numbers all day (and because engineering doesn’t pay as well). I could’ve just as easily gone into electrical, mechanical, or computer engineering, but had a background in building things that steered me that way. As it is, I spend a fair amount of time moonlighting those other disciplines anyway, either at work or at home.

    :fistbump:

Truth. I’ve often got dozens of things open at once, and I can jump between them very easily, but I can only focus on one thing at a time with any level of competence

One of the most important things, I believe, that I taught my sons. Is that if you have 2 or perhaps 3 true friends in your life, you have been gifted.
