Less than 150 into a new exhaust, thrilled

Good morning everyone,

My last vehicle was a ls3 camaro which went from a Flowmaster system to open headers with turndowns clamped onto them, to a race setup. I've had loads of v8s and all sorts of exhaust systems, exhaust shop, catback and home brew. I don't want or need to stick out anymore and have people whip heads around to see who the vehicle is, I just don't care. Also, I don't chase tenths in the quarter mile and single digit horsepower anymore, if I wanted to race the truck I wouldn't have bolted armor and heavy tires on it, so I didn't care about the performance side (though wouldn't want a noticeable drop for sure).

This time I solely wanted an exhaust that checked a couple of boxes:
-Sounds like a v8 truck
-Sounds more like a factory performance upgrade than jimbob throwing glasspacks on his truck to wake up his neighbors daily
-turndown before axle

I've grown past vehicles that make your ears bleed, btdt and wanted a quiet vehicle.

At the recommendation of @Black Wolf, I purchased a flowsound 8424553 for around 45 shipped. I paid 90 dollars to have it welded in and a turndown and hanger added. So 135 bucks total.

It added the v8 sound, no droning noticed over a couple hundred highway and interstate miles, and could be mistaken for a nice sounding factory truck. I especially enjoy it driving around town. At highway speeds, I can't notice it, like I wanted.

I could have dealt with a little more volume, but I'm glad I went this route. I haven't noticed any loss or gains in performance (wasn't concerned about this, feels plenty peppy still), it's out of the way for offroading and not toasting my 35" spare, and costs next to nothing. You don't have to spend piles of cash for an exhaust upgrade unless you have super specific criteria or want to buy for the name or brand.

 

Placed it here instead of performance and tuning, as I don't consider it a performance mod, just functional for offroading and a nice mild v8 sound.

 

Could you upload a video of your truck at startup and idle please? I may be interested in this.

 

I'll do that this afternoon, it never sounds accurate so I wasn't planning on it, but I'll do it anyways.

It is 100% a Flowmaster clone, apparently their patents expired, but unsure which model. I always used super 10s since I was a noise junkie.

Keep in mind, if you are a noise junkie, this won't be loud enough for you. I am sure it will get slightly louder after awhile, but it is a fairly quiet system. And I really enjoy that for once.

They might have a different version that is a clone of a different Flowmaster, I just haven't seen it.

 

Wex dont worry about uploading a video if it. Is the muffler just as long as stock muffler? Id like to weld it into the existing tailpipe if it'll fit.

 

It’s not just a flowmaster clone. There’s zero patents on it. Flowmaster makes their own generic muffler. It’s exactly the same thing as one with the name flowmaster stamped onto it. It’s a dual 50 series from what I can tell. They’re $19 shipped on a wholesale account.

 

To each their own. I had a Flowmaster on my 2013. After putting your 8" on my 2020, I'll never look back. Flowmaster should be rebranded as noise maker. The 2013 did not respond to the FM like trucks respond to your systems.

 

I took a video but it's pointless, can't really hear anything.

It's close, not sure how close, though. I'll take some measurements.

 

It's about 4" shorter than the bloated factory muffler.

I'd like to have a little better sound, but can't stand drone when towing...
The last exaust sytem I messed with, or up, was on a Ford Conversion van.
It had a 4.6 V8 in it and I had a FM installed.....it was horrible. Nothing but drone all the time.

 

Im very hesitant on replacing the stock exhaust and yes I read all the great things on the Dirty Deeds exhaust. I did the SUV FM on my 4Runner thinking it would not drone...WRONG and a baffle weld broke and had a horrible rattle. Off it cam and bought a new stock exhaust. Hence the reserve on changing the Tundra. We drive from Pa to Missouri a few times a year and where driving to Kentucky/Tennessee 3-4 times a year so absolutely NO drone is a must. We'd like a little more deep throaty sound out of the Tundra but don't want loud or drone.

 

What a lot of people don’t realize, especially modern vehicles, have drone. NHV engineers spend a ton of time canceling out drone using physics, and more simply, math.


Literally every single intake manifold and exhaust manifold uses the above fact. Simply removing the stock part in favor of something louder just about guarantees drone. There’s only 2 exhaust manufacturers whom take this into consideration for a tundra.

but we are the only manufacturer that not only cancels out drone like Toyota does, but we also don’t lose low end torque. No other manufacturer on earth, besides Toyota, takes both low end torque and drone into consideration when designing an exhaust for a tundra.

 

Look up our 10” system. When we choose the 2.25” tubing option, there is zero drone on the highway. Plus, you gain more low end torque. And better mpg. 760-877-4234

 

I did something similar with my 19. Got a dual in/out Borla XS Pro for Amazon for $125, had the plumbing done locally for $100, then paid $60 for two 18" black tips. $285 for a great-sounding catback. Has a unique rumble and not much of a drone. People comment on it, and personally I think it has the smoothest, most consistent sound I've ever heard. It's opened up some over time, and right now is pretty much exactly what I wanted going in. I came from a 16 Mustang GT, which I had a similar goal with. Good sound, loud enough to be noticed, and a minimal drone.

 

Wex, I took your advice and bought the flowsound muffler online for $50 after shipping and taxes. Bought a 4" pipe reducer for $5 at Oreillys and I'll need to replace a sawzal blade. But for $60, I welded the new muffler into the existing tailpipe, and even used the hanger off the stock muffler.

The system sounds great. Just a little throat at startup, just enough growl at climbing speeds to make you happy you didn't overdo anything and hardly any drone at all. I recommend the flowsound muffler.
