Most of the time when I go into S mode the tranny will go into S4. Sometimes if I go into S mode the tranny will chose S3? This almost always happens going down a steep hill. Is this normal?

Yes, depending on your speed it will go to 4th, if you’re going slower it will shift to 3rd

So I take it S4 is the normal default from Drive unless your going too slow for S4?

It'll go to 4 UNLESS you're already in a lower gear; it will indicate that gear.

If you're crawling up up hill with a load in D you could be in any gear. I notice when towing up hill and obviously D has me in a lower gear. By shifting into S it will indicate that gear. Often 3 or even 2!

I recently saw a good video where someone explained the different modes and gears really well. Can’t seem to remember who it was though.
