These tires are soooo heavy?

    Just a question about this.

I have a 2016 Tundra and I've always run Toyo's on it, AT2's and now AT3's. Just scooped up a 4R TRD Pro and needed tires, got the Toyo R/T's but did some research, people are like omg these tires are so heavy.

I mean, in my unqualified opinion...who cares? So maybe the gas mileage suffers a bit, or the rotational mass (I'm trying to sound smart) means the brakes wear out a little quicker? Can you actually feel that they are heavier? So maybe you replace some consumable parts a littler quicker? No big deal?

I dunno...genuinely interested in why people list this as a concern. Personally I buy new 35's for my truck every Nov here in CO whether I need them or not (prob don't need them) and will do the same for the 4R. Just wondering.

Weight/rotational weight matters for acceleration, braking, breaking shit, economy…etc.

    How much weight?

Does a fat motherfucker who loads his vehicle down with BS win if his tires are lighter than the guy who isn't but runs lean? So many variables.

Can I ask why you buy tires every year whether you need them or not? Big heavy tires and lifts put lots more stress on some parts of our Trucks, C/V's, bearings etc. If you off-road a lot and have a big wallet I wouldn't think twice about it, a pavement princess on the other hand, maybe not so much.

If you're running a 35 or 37 the weight of the tire could be the difference between 6th gear being usable or not. Not sure about a 4runner, but I'd guess the problem is worse given it has less power.

The heavier toyo tires are tough as hell though. If you want a tough off road tire or work truck tire then it's worth it to me, but for street use it's overkill.

Great question. There are 3 miles of washboard dirt roads one way to get to my place, I wash my truck maybe 3 times a year. I've run red cone and other gnarly trails with it as well. Ref consumable parts I just replace the as necessary. I guess I'm just confused at people who step over dollars to pick up dimes.

I'm just quoting you to say, I love your username. And I do work the tires hard on everything I use.

How exactly is it necessary to change your tires every year? As far as Dollars and Dimes go, tough times out there for some of the people in this Country, it doesn't confuse me at all.

I drive around 30k miles a year, or so. I like to have good tread in the winter. Tires aren't great, I swap them out.

Most of my adult life was spend counting change out on the counter to pay bills, or on the struggle grind. I grew up in a trailer park. We all have tough times...nobody is given anything and there are no guarantees. It's all what you make of it.

Nice story, and glad it worked out well for you. You would think you would be the last one to complain about people pinching pennies, yet here you are.

Every bit counts. Do some research on rotational weight and why it matters. Racing is where I would start.

Recently I wanted a set of factory wheels and tires off a newer truck. The 20’s and slightly bigger tires added 60 lbs of rotational weight. I wasn’t ready to give up that much power and towing mileage.
