5k oil change?

Also with the options to work remote due to the recent situation, I just did my first dealer oil change as I hit 3k miles in 7 months. Before all this, I usually hit close to 40k miles per year.

 

I change my oil every 10,000 seconds based on the engine hour meter.

 

My mother has a 2015 Subaru Outback with 4,875 miles on it. She is on her 7th oil change since the book says 12 months or 5,000 miles. Somebody is gonna get the nicest decade old Subaru when she stops driving!!

 

She's clocking in at about 800 miles per year. If I drove that infrequently, I might push the interval back just a tad, especially out of warranty. But I drive about 7000-8000 miles per year, give or take a few, so changing once per year doesn't seem to be quite as excessive.

 

Then you wouldn't want to hear about the BMW my mechanic is putting an engine in @75K miles following BMW's prescribed extended change intervals. Turbo 4 banger with wiped camshafts and high oil consumption. This isn't his first one and it won't be his last. And oh, by the way, the turbo is getting replaced as well. It seems that they really don't like extended oil change intervals either.


Audi, VW, BMW, etc. have all seen early engine failures attributable to extended oil changes. Some have to do with driving style and habits, while the majority can't be attributed to anything but extended oil changes.

It's puzzling as to why someone would be willing to risk shortening the engine life of a very expensive vehicle over a very inexpensive oil change.

 

You should take your logic over to the four stroke dirt bike forums. They swear up and down that you don't need expensive and that changing it often is a waste of money. People will do what they like but changing the oil does not lead to engine failure.

 

I get the extended performance high mileage mobile one supposedly good for 20K miles yet I can't make myself go past 3K in a turbo car i have, 5K in the my others, uggg - the oil looks clear and clean enough to use on the lawn mowers....

 

I'm glad I sold my BMW. Don't think I'll ever go back to German cars ever again. Too many of the same issues keep popping up all across the lineup and not one has ever been a Unicorn and not have issues.

My Truck has 270k on it and that’s with 10-12k service interval at dealer using 0-20 bulk oil

I've known several people who put ridiculous mileage on vehicles with extended oil changes. A friend put 270,000+ on a 2000 Tundra changing it every 20,000. Virtually all his miles were highway, though. He lives way out in the sticks so a trip to work and home is 40 miles each way. Everywhere else he goes is several miles too, so the truck had an easy life. The truck looked and drove just fine when he traded it in on his new Tundra. I personally bought a '97 Cavalier for a commuter car with 132,000 on it. I changed it every 12,000, and it was still fine when I sold it at 241,000. I put 111,000 miles on a Honda Goldwing changing it every 12,000 and never had a bit of trouble out of the engine. Valve checks were at 32,000, but I never had to adjust one. They just didn't seem to wear.

But I put a lot of easy freeway miles on all of them. The Tundra I recently bought will spend 80% (or more) of it's miles hooked to a 6000-pound trailer. I'll probably change it every 5000.

 

I do 7500 mile changes because I commute 8-11 minute 3 mile trips to work daily (pretty much 80% city miles on this truck). Unfortunately and fortunately my work is close to home but it's hard on the truck since it doesn't truly warm up. I only have 13k miles in 2.5 years. If I lived further then I would likely do 10K mile changes.

This is all coming from someone who used to do 3k mile changes in the 90's and believed firmly in it.

Oil change intervals are based on a mythical mixed mode of driving.

a.)Someone who drives 4 miles to work 5 days a week is stressing the oil differently than
b.)Someone who drives 30 miles to work 5 days a week than
c.)Someone who tows

Even Toyota has "severe service" recommendations, that most folks seem to conveniently forget about.

Only the person who drives 30 miles to work 5 days a week is the one that most likely qualified for normal 10,000 mile oil changes. The other two scenarios would qualify for severe service or 5,000 mile changes.

Would Toyota cover an oil related engine failure if you could prove you did 10,000 mile oils changes? It all depends if Toyota felt that the overall engine condition was consistent with "normal" operation. They most likely would be generous, but heavy varnish, sludging, camshaft wear, etc. might raise a few questions.

As for the four stroke dirt bike forums, talk is cheap until you lose an engine on your own nickel or a warranty claim is denied. All over a cheap oil change??

In nearly 50 years of dealing with every type of motorcycle imaginable, I've known no one who has lost an engine as a result of frequent oil changes. Dirt bike riders around here typically change oil and filter after a handful of hard weekends. Its just cheap insurance.

 

55 years motorcycling here. I've motocrossed, flat tracked a little, hare and hounds, road raced, and Lord only knows how many miles on the highways between Nova Scotia and the southernmost borders of the US. Given the choice, I'll change more often than I think desirable because less often just isn't in my wheelhouse.

I've also been taking part in various email and Internet forums since shortly after they began. I've taken part in countless threads such as this with varying opinions on product brands and frequency of service. My most noticeable takeaway is that nobody is ever wrong in their own minds. I like to say that everyone's right and everyone else is wrong. I've seen one post in 20+ years where the guy said his personal choice had turned out wrong and he damaged an engine -- exactly one. And without going into details, even that one post was highly questionable as proof of anything.

We won't settle anything here, but others' opinions are interesting.

Like t4r2tundra a few posts above I also came from the time where you changed your oil every 3000 miles. But times change.

Toyota care is a joke. They do the bare minimum. It’s all a marketing tool

 

Funny that as soon as all the dealers started having to cover the bill for maintenance packages to stay competitive, oil change intervals went to 10k miles. On a brand new engine I change the oil 3 times before it hits 6k miles. Every time there’s large metal flakes in the oil filter cartridge cap from the new engine breaking in. They diminish over time with every oil change, but there’s no way I’m leaving those circulating for 10k miles. On a brand new engine I change at 500, 1500, 3500, 6500, 10k and then I do 5k intervals from then on. Oil is the lifeblood of your expensive vehicle and it’s cheap to change it.

 

I change my oil once a year, around 3000 miles for me, with Amsoil signature and eom filter. I sleep better at night knowing the bolts are to torque.

If I relied on the dealer, 5k mile or 1 year whichever came first intervals would be the minimum.

 

Just came from the dealer at 4700 miles. No oil change and they did not even rotate the tires!

What did they even do then? 5k is supposed to be a tire rotation per Toyota cares maintenance schedule.

 

According to the Toyota maintenance schedule on the app, this is done 0 - 5000 miles.

Torque nuts & bolts on body and chassis

Inspect drive shaft boots
Inspect steering linkage and boots
Inspect engine air filter

 

No shit, I thought the first oil change was 10k, even though I do four of them by the first 10k miles.

We all could just follow the owner's manual...and the dealer should support that in OP's case.
