2021 SR5 CrewMax-using the Toyota App

About a month ago I purchased a 2021 Tundra SR5 CrewMax. I’m trying to use the remote connect that the dealer set up when I bought up the truck. I have the Toyota app on my phone, and it talks to my truck as I get the mileage, fuel, and location updates. However, I’m not able to lock/unlock, see status of car such as if the windows are up or down, etc. I know you have to have a push button start to remote start the vehicle (I have a regular key), but what about the other stuff like remote lock/unlock?

 

I think those features are part of the subscription services. Did you opt into that?

 

I think I opted into it. The dealer set up the app and it clearly communicates with my truck as I get the mileage, fuel, and location info.

When I watch videos of remote connect, I never see anything that excludes certain features “if equipped” other than the remote start being available only if you have push start button.

You should check your sales agreement. When I got my 2020 the subscription was free for the first year.

I opted to subscribe to "safety connect" for $80 a year, but it saves me $20 a year on my insurance because "safety connect" includes stolen vehicle locator. I mainly wanted it for that as well as "enhanced roadside assistance" since it's pretty much a wash between paying for that or AAA.

 

Yeah, I believe they grade you on a 100 point scale. I got a 99 once but I think it was because Mrs. Bandito was driving.

 

So if you open the app, drop down the menu up top and click manage subscriptions, it’ll show you exactly what you have. In order to lock/unlock/remote start (which you can do with a “dumb” key”) it’ll say you have a subscription to remote connect. It should have come with a free year trial when it was purchased new.

I found that just getting the app up and running on my phone was pretty glitchy. Of course once I opted out of letting them monitor and report on the vehicle/me it was a moot point anyway since the app booted me out. A "Free Year" of service as long as we can monitor and report on you? Good riddance!

 

Agree. There are categories and tiers as to what can be opted out of; the remote start services requires a minimum of some monitoring but its opaque as to what data they are collecting.

 

Here’s my problem: Speed limits are based off the worst drivers. As in, “we think the shittiest driver can go this fast without crashing”. I’m an exceptional driver. I should be allowed to drive faster.

In addition, if the speed limit is 55, and I get stuck behind someone going 45 for ten miles, I should be able to make up that difference over the next ten miles. More often than not, I get robbed of the speed I’m allowed by law.

I believe you need to have the upgraded jbl head unit. My sr5 didn’t have the upgraded head unit for remote start

 

Wait til folks find out ISPs collect data with no opt out (unless you use a VPN or similar tech).

I must’ve not gotten a fancy enough Tundra. That YouTube comment did give me the options to luck, unlock, or remote start, but it said “This feature is not supported for this vehicle.” Not sure if that means it’s not capable of it or if I just wasn’t signed up for remote connect at the dealer (maybe they set me up for other stuff) No big deal. I didn’t even know of this feature when I bought the truck.

In the app under subscriptions I have Safety Connect for a year and WiFi connect for 90 days.

 

I have a 2021 SR5 crewmax with the Convenience Extra Value Package and was under the impression that I would be able to remote start with the app or key fob. The sales guy said that option only came with the limited and higher models. I felt like others here with an SR5 have the remote start but it may be dependent on the options added to the truck. My app only shows the free trials for safety connect and wifi.

 

Sales guy really don't know much other than what is on their computer and the print out sheets. I was told BSM did not come on Off-Road trucks, I told him he had one used on his lot, he changed the subject lol. I came home with a Off Road with BSM a few days later. My SR5 has remote start.
