    Hello everyone,
I’m posting this here because of the rust issues the first gens had some I figured y’all would be knowledgeable about this issue.
New to the forum and glad to finally own a tundra. I recently purchased a 2008 regular cab short bed tundra. I feel like I got a decent deal on it because the interior and body are in great condition, the only downside is the frame has rust. After intensive inspection, the rust appears to be mainly surface rust with some flaking in the more severe areas. This week I am planning on getting started with working on the frame. After removing bumpers, bed and other easily removable parts I will sanding, grinding and wire brushing the entire frame and some parts of the body such as the body seams on both sides, some spots in the bed, and any rust in the bottom of the cab and then brushing on POR-15. I was looking to see if any of the members on this forum could give me any help or advice on what I need to do, as this is my first time working on a truck frame. Any opinions are appreciated. I can post pictures if I need to.
    Thank you

If you're doing anything other than wire-brushing like grinding where bare shiny metal is exposed, definitely used the metal prep they sell otherwise, it'll flake off not holding within a few months to a year. Also, use the de-greaser as well (or something comparable). A top coat of paint is necessary for UV protection if directly exposed in sun.

I recommend two coats of the semi-gloss black (closest to actual frame color instead of gloss) and try doing it on a cool day waiting the necessary time required to get two coats on it. Put clear plastic wrap under the cover when you put back on the lid to get a good seal. Only take out what you need and put it in a small container (i.e. knock off rubber maid container) that you'll discard later.

Use a tarp underneath the area of work so it won't stain your driveway. Wear clothes you don't care about because you'll be tossing them when your done. Always wear disposable gloves and if crawling under vehicle where hair COULD touch the frame, wear a disposable wash cap.

You may look silly, put it'll save a lot of pain later trying to get it off your skin/hair.

Also, you should be posting this in the "General Tundra Discussion" since it's a Gen 2 but you want feedback from all Tundra owners.

    Good luck.
