I have a 2018 TRD Sport. I got 1 keyfob from the dealer when I purchased. I got a second key but it has not guts. Seems logical that I could buy a key with the guts that is obviously not keyed to work with my truck, but take the guts out and put in my key. Anyone know if that would work? Then I could just get it programmed to work my truck.

    Thanks for any input.

Should work, could / and or get the new key cut as well while having it programmed

The key is already cut, which also means it isn't very expensive.

You can get the "guts" from any key with the same FCCID coding on the back of it and swap it into your cut key and program it yourself with Techstream if you have the cable and a laptop. I bought an uncut key on ebay for like $35 to make my second key since mine only came with 1. Had the kid at Big R cut the key after I programmed the fob to my truck. Worked like a charm.

Why would a dealer only give you one key/fob? I won't buy a vehicle without getting 2. I prefer 3 keys like I got with my 2009 Tacoma. Next Tacoma I bought had 2. I made the dealer cut and program another one as part of the deal.

I am in Mississippi and the truck was delivered from Virginia. Was told it had two keys and didn't find out until delivery. Long story, but I wasn't willing to push the issue.

I would especially if they told you it had 2.

Go through the dealer if you decide to get a second. Don’t buy eBay or Amazon fob, they are sketchy at best, 50\50 chance they work. Spend the $$ and do it right.
